She didn’t yet know it, but by combining writing, travelling and French export products, she had already established the base for what would become her career.
She was first hired in France as a bilingual tour guide, initially by a local tourist board and then by a British tour operator.
After acquiring a technical degree in international business in Toulouse, her bilingualism gave her the edge to land a job in a firm exporting textile products from the Corrèze. Her most valued talent was her skill at interpreting sales negotiations, earning her the bonus of travelling as far as Moscow or Montreal with the sales director.
In 2005, she started work in a tourist board near her home in the culturally rich area of the Périgord Noir. She was initiated into freelance translating when the president of the association, a German translator named Carola Baylé, began subcontracting work to her in 2006.
Véronica soon became director of the tourist board. Meanwhile, her professional acquaintances increasingly requested her translation services for brochures, websites and commercial contracts, and it was this work that she found most fulfilling.
She is now a full-time freelancer offering language services in tourism and business.
She would like to bring together the two worlds that exist in her life: America, with its dreams of French “art de vivre”, and France, a country that simultaneously yearns to become economically more dynamic but has not yet realized the full value of its tourism and typically French products.
She is proud to be one of the translators for the prestigious Michelin Guides: the English translations of the 2011 Weekend Guide to Prague and the “Hong Kong” section of the 2011 China Green Guide are examples of her work. Other clients include large hotel groups, international restaurant chains and wine producers. She also translates publicity copy for luxury products such as watches, jewelry and high fashion.
She translated and wrote for the 2012 Michelin Dordogne/Limousin/Berry Green Guide, an example of travel writing that she hopes will the stage for more travel writing experiences in the future as she continues her translating work.
