To obtai...n a freelance translator/editor/tester position using English-to-Japanese/Japanese-to-English translation skills.
Work Experience
1. From September 2010 on: As a freelance localizer/translator, I have translated English to Japanese in the area of Electric products, IT (Software incl. ERP/Hardware), Business/Marketing/Accounting/Financial/Banking/Auditing (incl. ERP), (Mobile) Telecommunications (Nokia, Ericsson, SoftBank), Mathematics (MATLAB - MathWorks), Chemical industry, etc. And also, from Japanese to English, I have translated documents for Telecommunications (Nokia, Ericsson, SoftBank), IT (incl. ERP), Steel industry, Electric products, Auditing/Financial statements and emails exchanged between companies.
2. September 2010 - September 2002 -: Worked for three translation companies, “Abes” (Premium vendor of Lionbridge. The President is a director of Japan Translation Federation.) and also in “TEC Software & Technical Services Corporation” (a subsidiary of TEC, the Plant Engineering Giant in Japan) and “Gproject” (a hard-to-find Japan-based Multi-Language Vendor), as a Quality Assurance Manager/Lead Reviewer/Translator/Localizer/Testor (though no experience in creating a test case), in the area of Electric products, IT (software incl. ERP and Photography/Video, and hardware), Business/Marketing (incl. ERP), Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, and Machinery, etc. Also, as a Quality Assurance Manager or a language lead, I searched for and found new translators and/or evaluated their translation tests. Moreover, I wrote a manual for a checking freeware for translators to use to check or review their own translations. And I set a quality standard (criteria).
3. August 2002 - March 1998: Worked for "SAP Japan", a subsidiary in Japan for the ERP (incl. accounting and banking) Giant "SAP" (one of the Top-level Software Vendors in the world) as a localizer/translator/reviewer/engineer (technical support for helping a coordinator use Trados and Microsoft Word)/module-coordinator. I experienced almost all modules (the Four main areas of Logistics, Technical, Human Relations, Accounting. In addition to them, new modules such as NetWeaver, SCM, CRM, SRM, and so on, and many more industry-specific solutions ranging a variety of industry sectors such as Banking, Oil & Gas, Utilities, Automobile, Aerospace, Constructions, HiTech, Retail, Apparel, Beverage, and so on.). Also, for a new test translation, I found an English material from the Internet, created an evauation criteria, and actually evaluated translation tests that were submitted from applicants.
4. May 1990 - March 1998: Worked as a language lead and/or coordinator for three outsourcers incl. two representative translation companies in Japan, that is, “Three A Systems” (currently, absorbed in “WeLocalize Japan) and “To-in” (the oldest translation company in Japan) as a translator/reviewer/coordinator, in the area of Electric products, IT (software/hardware), Machinery, Mathematics, Physics, etc for all kinds of materials including actual products, manuals, marketing materials (incl. brochures and press releases), online help, training materials. Also, I set English materials as new test translations, created an evauation criteria, and actually evaluated translation tests from many applicants. And I set a quality standard (criteria).
In addition, I worked also as an engineer who managed machine translation’s dictionaries using UNIX (C-shell programming).
Main End-Clients: Mentor Graphics, Intergraph, Honeywell, Sony Tektroniks, OKI (Electric), HP, IBM, Sun Microsystems, Sybase, DEC, AutoDesk, SiliconGraphics, etc.
5. May 1990 - January 1989: Engaged in Marketing Research in a listed company called “Japan Knowledge Industry Corp.” (now merged into “IX Knowledge” corp.). I researched more than 60 companies from a variety of industries and afterwards this experience has helped me translate materials from various industries.
6. June 1988 - April 1987: Engaged in Factory Automation as a computer programmer and librarian (System Admin) (using COBOL language on a general-purpose computer manufactured by NEC corp.) in a company called “Think” (now absorbed in Yokogawa Electric Corp. Group). Afterwards, this experience has helped me translate materials from the IT industry, especially from IBM.

Specialized in Educational Psychology and finished all the courses except the thesis.
Translation Education: Although I didn't go to a translation faculty of a university or a translation school, I had more concentrated translation education for half a year (about 1000 hours of on-the-job-training) in the first outsourcer called “Translation Center” of “Nikkei Printing Corporation” for which I worked. That is, senior employees corrected my translations on paper using a red pen, and gave me feedback in on-the-job-training. By this, I learned almost all patterns of translations for both basic and complicated contents in the area of IT and Machinery.
Qualifications: United Nations Association’s Test of English Level B.
Training Courses: All the courses for SAP Materials Management. General Logistics, Sales and Distribution, SAP Basis (technological infrastructure) basic course. English to Japanese Localization/Translation: 0.100 to 0.120 USD per source word (repetitions and fuzzy matches can be discounted).
Performance
English to Japanese Translation: 2000-2300 source words / 8hrs a day (depending on the contents. For a marketing material, I can translate only 1600 source words a day and may humbly ask you to pay at a rate of 0.120 USD or higher).
