FREELANCE WORK EXPERIENCE IN BROADCAST JOURNALISM AND TRANSLATION
1990 - BULGARIAN NATIONAL RADIO - Sofia, Bulgaria
1991 Freelance translator, adaptor (Children's programmes, Bulgarian National Radio - "Hristo Botev")
Among the original and adapted works contributed is the translation from English into Bulgarian and adaptation for a children's radio series of Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland". This work endeavoured to capture the hilarious effect of nonsense as well as to bring home to children all the intricacies and secrets of the author's underlying message as fascinatingly revealed by Martin Gardner in his "Annotated Alice". In order to be true to the spirit of the original, I had to look for current cultural parallels that would evoke similar associations in the minds of the present-day Bulgarian audience. The series was extremely successful and had many re-broadcasts.
1986 - BULGARIAN NATIONAL TELEVISION, Sofia, Bulgaria
1991 Freelance translator (Feature-film Section)
All my translations have generally been acknowledged to have the merits of a labour of love. As a result of the acclaim won from the translation of the books (see below), I was commissioned to translate a TV series after Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter", along with quite a few other feature films, set in the present day and documentaries on a wide range of subjects, such as wild life, ecology, life in big cities, the achievements of great film-makers and stars, etc.
1984 - "NARODNA KULTURA" AND "NAUKA I IZKUSTVO" PUBLISHERS, Sofia, Bulgaria
1990 Freelance translator, language editor (Bulgarian translations of English language fiction)
Translated from English into Bulgarian "The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne (published in 1984 and republished in 2010 by “Vestnikarska grupa Bulgaria” – 300 pages). This slim, but weighty in many respects, classic required a thorough background research to comprehend the historical set-up and psychological atmosphere of the times of the first English settlers in America. The Puritan psychology and canons also affect the author's style whose mood had to be adequately reflected in the Bulgarian translation. Of particular importance was to render the fantastic interplay of light and shade and the sombre colours pervading the novel. Despite the difficulty of translating the heavy sentence constructions, the circumstantial and detailed descriptions, the abundant synonyms and the antiquated speech of the characters, the overall sound of this masterpiece is that of a sermon-like poetic eloquence. So I also devoted special attention to my search of the exact rhythm of every phrase.
Translated from English into Bulgarian "The Dead Zone" by Stephen King (published in 1986 - 560 pages). Since I was born in the same year as the author and the main character, it was a case of an easy identification with the atmosphere of the times and the psychology and speech of the characters for me. On the other hand, "The Dead Zone" has its own challenges. It is full of details from local history and everyday life, including quotations from long-forgotten TV programmes, catch-phrases twenty years out of fashion, students' folklore and other supra-lingual information that in the pre-Internet days was impossible to research. Fortunately, Dr Duncan Perry, an American historian and then Dean for Graduate Studies at Maryland University, USA, came on a visit to Sofia. He gave me invaluable information that was essential for the comprehension of the rich associations in this many-sided book. This translation was reprinted many times. A new edition was published in 1999 by "Hermes" Publishers, Plovdiv, Bulgaria (ISBN 954-459-631-3).
Translated from English into Bulgarian "Einstein for Beginners" by Joseph Schwartz and Michael McGuinness (published 1986). Despite its title and playful look, this book is no beginner's match, as far as translation is concerned, as it manages to portray the personality of a genius and render the essence of his theories through a comic-like simplicity and wit.
The success of my translations resulted in my being asked to do the language-editing/revising of books translated from English into Bulgarian. Thus I became the editor-stylist of the Bulgarian translation of :
Axel Munthe's "The Story of San Michele" (published in 1987 – 450 pages)
Stephen King's "Fire-starter" (published in 1989 – 510 pages)
Erle Stanley Gardner's "The Case of the Black-Eyed Blonde" and "The Case of the Moth-Eaten Mink" (published in 1990 – 450 pages).
1983 - INSTITUTE OF SUGGESTOLOGY, Sofia, Bulgaria
1984 Freelance translator
My training in music, combined with my experience as a translator and teacher, led to my being commissioned by Dr G. Lozanov to translate the lyrics of two full Bulgarian operas for children so that they could be sung in English as part of the experimental programme for the new teaching methods at the Institute.
1973 - BULGARIAN NATIONAL TELEVISION - Sofia, Bulgaria
1984 Freelance editor, co-author, translator (from Bulgarian into English), and presenter (20 hours a week for 6 months of the year – 5760 hours)
In addition to creating original items (interviews, discussion shows and feature pieces) I reviewed and selected suitable material and compiled the scripts for 120 minute long magazine programmes launched in 1973 by the Bulgarian Television for foreign holiday-makers in Bulgaria. These strived to throw light on government policies, the work of various public institutions, the history, culture and way of life of the Bulgarian people.
I also translated and presented parts of the news in English (4 pages per day for 5 days a week for 3 months of the year – 2880 pages) .
1972 - SOFIA PRESS - Sofia, Bulgaria
1984 FreelancetTranslator
Translation from Bulgarian into English of numerous publications on social, economic, political and public administration issues for dissemination abroad – 520 pages .
Translation currently accounts for 100% of my total income ]
