I suppose in all “Translator of the Year” awards the winner is selected based on the nature, diversity and complexity of the translation work completed in the previous year, but presuming that this award will be organized by Proz.com I wonder (but for the Kudoz points) how would you make out:
1. Volume of work done
2. Difficulty of work done
3. CAT expertise
4. Length of translation career
5. Professional attitude

This being said, I wouldn’t vote. Probably for the same reasons I stopped participating and voting in the translation contests. Sorry!

I am afraid I am too busy for putting my mind to such assessments.
I don't really see any significant purpose.

The only obvious one is not in the list.
BTW, this would exclude anyone who uses GT to pre-translate. | | | I Wouldn't Vote At All | Jun 18, 2021 |
Because I find these "best of the year awards" quite political and discriminatory. Like the American Academy Award's "best leading actor of the year" award.

A while ago I read a report about how candidates are selected for jobs.
The conclusion was that the candidate who gets the job is the one the panel members like more than the others - regardless of qualifications and experience.
(To which I would add: the one whose bank manager is a friend of one of the members of the panel - or something along those lines).

There are fake translators out there stealing jobs to young colleagues everytime they translate in other languages different from their mother tongues/variants. They should not take part of any contest in this community.

Awards go to people who accomplished something or who did something great for the industry or who are role models for others. So, a translator who is an expert at CAT tools won't get the award unless he did something with that knowledge that helped many others. | | | Kevin Fulton United States Local time: 13:08 German to English Highest number of KudoZ questions asked | Jun 18, 2021 |
There are a large number of candidates to select from in this category.

Although I share the negative view of other commenters here towards such competitions, any award of this type should be based on something a person has done that goes beyond merely doing their job conscientiously and professionally, with consistent high quality.
So, for example, voluntary work, mentoring new translators, putting yourself at risk to carry out a vital interpreting job - this kind of "extracurricular" activity should carry more weight when it comes to deciding which translator is sufficiently outstanding to qualify for an award.
As for expertise with CAT tools? Pshaw!! | | | Other - a combination of the above | Jun 19, 2021 |
I don't think it's possible to use a single criterion to capture the excellence of a translator. Years ago, when I belonged to The American Association of Language Specialists, we tried to define a set of characteristics that could be used to rate translators as having A, B, or C levels of competence, as is done for simultaneous interpreters. We ended up with a list of characteristics which, when combined conjunctively, would give an idea of the colleague's expertise. | | | Do Awards Really Mean Anything Anymore, Anyway? | Jun 19, 2021 |
One of the men who was the Occupier-In-Chief in the Oval Office at the White House in Washington DC, USA, for, unfortunately, 8 years, was the recipient of what is generally considered to be the most prestigious yearly award in the world, the Nobel Peace Prize.
