degenerated vessels

"Degeneration is deterioration in the medical sense. Generally, it is the change from a higher to a lower form. More specifically, it is the change of tissue to a lower or less functionally active form.
* True degeneration: when there is actual chemical change of the tissue itself."

On reflection, "atrophied" is good. The problem with "erased" as well as with the Swedish original "utsuddad" and even "obliterated" is that they suggest
that somebody did so deliberately. I stand by "atrophied", I would post it except that I don't think the system allows the same person to double-post.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Cynthia Coan : "Atrophied," your alternative suggestion, would work better in a medical context. "Erased vessels" only turned up 5 Google hits, mostly non-medical. As for the word "vessels," I see no need to change it.
