French term

fantaisiste

French to English Art/Literary Other
>> artiste de music-hall, de cabaret qui chante, imite, raconte des histoires > comique humoriste

I'm not sure if "variety artist/entertainer" captures this sufficiently as I am not sure what that term actually conveys to a greater audience.. i feel it needs qualifying some how.. comic variety artist or comedian and variety artist... any ideas ??? thanks

hey, entertainer! you got it!

Thanks Bourth that's the kind of thing... they aren't generally taken terribly seriously for their singing, there's a sense of entertainer rather than "artist" about the whole thing... a term like performing artist is far more encompassing and vague - it's similar to that often used by record companies for their solo singers "top recording artist blah blah blah"... a fantaisiste does a bit of everything including impressions, the comic side is never far away... another French word that we don't have an exact equivalent of, I think, establishing that is as much of a help as anything!

Patrick Sebastien ? are they kidding ? : )

thanks everybody and sweet dreams, Anna, I know the feeling

singer/comedian

This appears to be a concept in the entertainment industry, though of course it can be extended with "actor", etc.

I'll show my age, I guess, but Google tells us that people such as George Formby, Des O'Connor, Bob Hope, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, and Jimmy Durante were "singer/comedians".

On the French side, Patrick Sébastien is also described as a \"fantaisiste\", though in English he would be a \"singer/comedian/impersonator/TV host\" and probably a lot more besides.

Variety artist

This is actually in the dictionary.
Also means: unconventional.
In a work of music, it means: fantasia

Hope it's clearer for you now.

entertainer, performing artist, performer

I think these terms are vague enough to mean that the person sings/dances/does comedy/acts, etc. Also, they are sometimes used in a somewhat derogatory manner to imply that what the "artist" does is far from being "art"... as in most singers nowadays (Britney anyone?) ;-)

I'm sorry, I didn't read that, you said "variety artist" as your first answer. Plus I'm adding "performer" and "entertainer". I'm just trying to help by giving more choices.
