Es una arritmia, un ritmo cardíaco diferente del normal, generalmente rápido, que se origina en las aurículas. La contractilidad de las aurículas deja de producirse al unísono, como latido único, y no coopera con los ventrículos, por lo que se experimentan latidos más fuertes y otros más débiles que tienen una cadencia irregular. Es identificable en el electrocardiograma. Se dice de ella que es una arritmia irregularmente irregular.
