All translation jobs are simple if you've studied a foreign language for a couple of years at school, Orrin. Didn't you know that? Genetic engineering patents, medical reports, contracts, tourist brochures, advertisements, literature, drama, poetry... all they need is a bit of an idea of two languages and a couple of free online dictionaries to help you decipher what GoogleTranslate presents you with. In fact, you can leave most of the GT text as it is, because the Word spell-checker seems happy with it. Doddle!
What really amazes these newbies is why we spent years learning the trade and why we moan about rates when they're earning maybe 10€/hour. After all, there's no tax to pay on those earnings, and precious few expenses.

Well I've learnt something today, thanks for the information. Technology has a way of tripping you up when you don't know the ins and outs.

Any ? after the url is a marker that lets a company know where a lead came from. It could be ?qpid or ?hop or any other letters after the ?. Doesn't necessarily mean it's an affiliate lead, could just as well be used for tracking banner clicks or any other type of tracking.

That is true that it's not a positive identification of an affiliate link, but the "hop" key/value pair is frequently used for Clickbank affiliate links. And a look at this website shows that they do offer Clickbank affiliate links. Take a look at http://www.realtranslatorjobs.com/affiliates.html and you will see the reference to Clickbank "hoplinks" at the bottom right of the page. So ... One thing totally invisible on this site is where any jobs come from? There's nowhere that I can see for a client wanting translation to ask for their work to be done.

But Sheila is right. If you can score pocket money in a "hit and run" job, and not pay taxes on what you do, rates in the 3 dollar an hour range can be appealing, or at least worth a try. Our job is to explain to clients what the difference is between serious translators and this kind of operations.
