PLATINUM-TIPPED SPARK PLUGS (if equipped)
It is not necessary to replace the platinum-tipped spark plugs as frequently as the conventional type of spark plugs. These spark plugs are designed to last much longer than the conventional type of spark plugs.
Do not reuse the platinum-tipped spark plugs by cleaning or re-gapping.
Always replace with the recommended platinum-tipped spark plugs.
BRAKE BOOSTER
Check the brake booster function as follows:
With the engine off, depress and release the foot brake pedal several times. When the brake pedal movement (distance of travel) remains the same from one pedal application to the next, continue on to the next step.
While depressing the foot brake pedal, start the engine. The pedal height should drop a little.
With the foot brake pedal depressed, stop the engine. Keep the pedal depressed for about 30 seconds. The pedal height should not change.
Run the engine for 1 minute without depressing the foot brake pedal, then turn it off. Depress the foot brake pedal several times. The pedal travel distance will decrease gradually with each depression as the vacuum is released from the booster

Timberland: Pursuing Sustainable Value—Doing Well by Doing Good
Timberland is no ordinary for-profit company. Sure, itmakes and sells rugged, high-quality boots, shoes,cl othes, and other outdoor gear. But Timberland’s corporate mission is about more than just making good products; it’s about “trying to make a difference in the communities where we live and work.”
Similarly, Timberland’s Jeff Swartz is no ordinary CEO. He sees Timberland’s place in the world as much bigger than the products it puts into it. He fervently believes that making money should go hand in hand with making the world a better place.
Swartz is so passionate about this concept that he’s sometimes referred to as a “prophet-CEO,” a messiah for a new age of social
awareness. He’s spreading the word about corporate citizenship to anyone who will listen, whether it’s customers, suppliers, or employees.
For example, when Swartz recently met with McDonald’s executives to pitch providing the fast-food giant with new uniforms, of service projects in dozens of countries and provides tens of thousands of volunteer work hours.
Then, rather than trying to close the sale, Swartz left the McDonald’s executives with the charge of truly helping every community in which it does business. In the end, Timberland
didn’t land the McDonald’s uniform business, but Swartz was elated all the same. “I told my team to find me 10 more places where I can have this conversation,” he said. “No one
believes in this more than we do, and that is our competitive advantage.”
Founded by Jeff’s grandfather, cobbler Nathan Swartz, in 1952, the now publicly traded company is out to show that it can make profits and combat social ills, help the environment, and improve labor conditions around the world. Swartz isn’t talking
charity—he’s an avowed capitalist. He’s just passionately committed to the notion that a company can do well by doing good.
Swartz refers to this as the beautiful—and profitable—nexus between “commerce and justice.”
For years, Swartz’s do-good philosophy paid off. Between 1992 and 2005, Timberland’s market capitalization grew eightfold,
and annual sales hit $1.6 billion. During that period, Swartz implemented social and environmental initiatives galore. He also
implemented some of the toughest worker protection standards in global manufacturing. The combination of financial performance
and corporate responsibility won Swartz praise from both Wall Street and social activists.
he didn’t bring along any designs. In fact, he didn’t even talk about clothing. Instead, he made an impassioned speech about how Timberland could help McDonald’s create a more unified, motivated, purposeful workforce that would benefit both the company and the world at large. He preached the virtues of Timberland’s corporate culture, which encourages employees to do volunteer work by giving them 40 hours of paid leave every year. He talked about Serv-a-palooza, Timberland’s annual single-day volunteer-fest, which hosts hundreds
But on the way to the awards ceremonies,
Timberland stalled. Over the
next four years, earnings slipped almost
20 percent. And the company was
forced to cut product lines and close
stores. This left many analysts wondering:
Has Timberland put too much emphasis
on justice and not enough on
commerce? Is it possible for a company
to serve a double bottom line of both
values and profits?
In this time of company crisis,
Swartz learned some valuable lessons
about the commerce side of the business.
Especially during tough economic
times, Swartz discovered, not all Timberland
consumers place a high value
on the sustainability part of the brand.
“Do good” works well in good times.
But when things get tough, customers
want a lot more. Swartz explains today’s more demanding customers:
These days, customers are saying, “I’ll have a conversation with you; [but] it will be all on my terms. Your product is going to have to be visually beautiful, technically perfect,
and distinctive. And it has to be available where I shop at a
price I’m willing to pay.” Now, if it is all of those things, you gain the permission, in the one minute the consumer deals with your brand, to devote about 10 seconds to the issue of
values. And if you miss any step along the way, you are
talking to yourself, which is a terribly sad place to be.
Despite the challenging times, Swartz remains firmly committed to Timberland’s mission of making a difference. Instead of backing off on Timberland’s sustainable practices, he’s ramping them up. And despite recent sales declines, profits are up over the past two years. Looking beyond the world’s current economic difficulties, Swartz insists that it is only a matter of time until consumers refuse to patronize companies that do not serve
their communities. “I believe that there’s a storm coming against the complacent who say good enough is good enough,” he says.
To inspire consumers to make more sustainable decisions, Timberland puts Green Index tags on its products. Modeled after
the nutritional labels found on food products, the index provides a 0-to-10 rating of each product’s ecological footprint in terms of
climate impact, chemicals used, and resources consumed. The lower the score, the smaller the environmental footprint.
Timberland is doing everything it can to reduce the footprint of the products it makes and sells. But the company’s sustainability
efforts go far beyond environmental responsibility. Swartz recently commissioned
a new long-term strategy for both environmental and social corporate
responsibility. The plan lays out short- and long-term goals supported by key initiatives
in line with four strategic pillars: energy (reduce greenhouse emissions), products (design environmentally responsible,
recyclable products), workplaces (establish
fair, safe, and nondiscriminatory workplaces), and service (energize and engage Timberland’s employees in service). Timberland is moving along on these initiatives at a rapid pace. It has a solarpowered distribution center in California and a wind-powered factory in the Dominican Republic. It’s currently installing
energy-efficient lighting and equipment
retrofits in its facilities and educating workers
about production efficiency. And it has launched two new footwear collections featuring outsoles made from recycled car
tires. Timberland’s new Earthkeeper line of boots, made from recycled and organic materials, has given rise to its Earthkeeper’s
campaign, an online social-networking effort that seeks to inspire one million people to take actions to lighten their environmental
footprints. Thus, despite recent setbacks, Swartz and Timberland continue in their quest of “caring capitalism,” doing well by doing good. Swartz has an advantage not held by many for-profit chief executives:
Although Timberland is a public company, the Swartz family controls 69 percent of shareholder voting rights. Therefore, Swartz
can pursue his own corporate values while being less accountable to Wall Street. Still, he has no illusion that he’s untouchable. For Timberland, “commerce” funds “justice.” “No one’s performance, especially in this age, will get supported through time if it’s substandard,” Swartz says. “Maybe I am self-indulgent, and if I am and our performance
suffers, I will get fired.
All I continue to say to shareholders is that I believe I am pursuing sustainable value.”1
Timberland is no ordinary for-profit company. Its corporate mission is about more than just making good products and profits. It’s about trying to make a difference in the world.
“We started out as bootmakers,” says
Timberland, “but we’re about much
more. Like you, we care about the strength of our neighborhoods, the well-being of
our environment, and the quality of life in our
communities.”Responsible marketersdiscover what consumers want and respond with market offerings that create value for buyers and capture value in return. The marketing
concept is a philosophy of customer value and mutual gain. Its practice leads the economy by
an invisible hand to satisfy the many and changing needs of millions of consumers.
Not all marketers follow the marketing concept, however. In fact, some companies use questionable marketing practices that serve their own rather than consumers’ interests. Moreover, even well-intentioned marketing actions that meet the current needs of some consumers may cause immediate or future harm to other consumers or the larger society. Responsible marketers must consider whether their actions are sustainable in the longer run. Consider the sale of SUVs. These large vehicles meet the immediate needs of many drivers in terms of capacity, power, and utility. However, SUV sales involve larger questions of consumer safety and environmental responsibility. For example, in accidents, SUVs are more likely to kill both their own occupants and the occupants of other vehicles. Research shows that SUV occupants are three times more likely to die from their vehicle rolling than are occupants of sedans. Moreover, gas-guzzling SUVs use more than their fair share of the world’s energy and other resources and contribute disproportionately to pollution and congestion
problems, creating costs that must be borne by both current and future generations. This chapter examines sustainable marketing and the social and environmental effects
of private marketing practices. First, we address the question: What is sustainable marketing and why is it important?

Et il devra être disponible à l’endroit où je fais mes achats et au prix que je suis d’accord de payer.” Là, si le client veut toutes ces choses, vous obtenez la permission, durant la minute que le consommateur dédie à votre marque, de consacrer environ 10 secondes à la question des valeurs. Et si vous faites le moindre faux-pas dans votre démarche, vous vous retrouvez à parler tout seul, ce qui est une situation terriblement malheureuse.
Malgré ces temps de défi, M. Swartz reste fermement dévoué à la mission Timberland de faire une différence dans le monde. Au lieu de reculer sur les pratiques d’économie durable chez Timberland, il les conforte. Et en dépit des récentes baisses des ventes, les profits ont augmenté sur les deux dernières années. Mais les efforts visant une économie durable de l’entreprise vont bien au-delà de la responsabilité environnementale.
M.Swartz a récemment financé une nouvelle stratégie à long-terme à la fois pour la responsabilité environnementale de l’entreprise et la responsabilité d’ordre social. Ainsi, malgré de récents revers de fortune, M.Swartz et Timberland poursuivent leur quête d’un « capitalisme soucieux du bien », qui se porte bien tout en faisant du bien.

Les responsables de marketing découvrent ce que les consommateurs désirent et leur répondent avec des offres de marché qui créent une valeur pour les acheteurs et qui permettent de créer de la valeur en retour. Le concept marketing est une philosophie de la valeur du consommateur et du gain mutuel. Sa pratique permet à l’économie d’être conduite par une main invisible et de satisfaire aux besoins nombreux et changeants de millions de consommateurs.
Pas tous les agents de marketing ne suivent le concept marketing, cependant. En fait, certaines entreprises ont recours à des pratiques de marketing discutables qui servent leurs intérêts plutôt que ceux des consommateurs.
En outre, même des actions de marketing bien intentionnées qui répondent aux besoins actuels de certains consommateurs risquent de générer des dégâts immédiats ou futurs à d’autres consommateurs ou à la société entière. Les agents de marketing responsables se doivent de considérer si leurs actions sont écologiquement durables sur le long terme.
Prenez le cas des ventes de véhicules utilitaires de sports (SUV). Ces gros véhicules répondent aux besoins immédiats de nombreux conducteurs en termes de volume, de puissance, et d’utilité. Cependant les ventes de SUV impliquent des questions plus vastes concernant la sécurité des consommateurs et la responsabilité environnementale.
Par exemple, dans les cas d’accidents, les SUV sont plus susceptibles d’entraîner le décès à la fois de leurs occupants et des occupants d’autres véhicules. Les recherches montrent que les occupants de SUV sont trois fois plus susceptibles de décéder du fait d’un retournement de leur véhicule que les occupants de voitures de type berlines. De plus, les SUV, qui sont énergivores, utilisent plus que leur juste part de l’énergie de la planète et d’autres ressources et contribuent de manière disproportionnée à la pollution et aux problèmes de congestion, générant des coûts qui doivent être supportés à la fois par la génération actuelle et les générations futures.2

Au fragment D.-K. B8, au moment où il s’agit d’exposer les déterminations positives ou négatives de l’Être « sans naissance et sans trépas », « d’un bloc », « tout ensemble » ou encore « plus grand et plus petit », c’est le terme sêmata qu’emploie Parménide :

Dans cet extrait, où il énonce la pensée de l’Être monolithique, uniforme et circulaire, Parménide désigne globalement les propriétés positives ou négatives de l’Être, en usant du terme que nous traduisons par signe, sêma.
Pourquoi ce terme, plutôt qu’un autre ? Ni Platon ni Aristote qui tous deux assument l’héritage de Parménide, n’useront jamais plus de ce terme, mais se serviront du mot pathè (affections). Ainsi, le terme pathos est récurrent dans le Parménide (148b4 ; 157b4 ; b6 ; 159a1, a2,a7) où en figure une liste. Et certaines des propriétés désignées par le terme pathè deviendront dans le Sophiste des formes intelligibles. Et certains membres de la liste platonicienne des pathè se retrouvent dans les Catégories d’Aristote, tandis que d’autres encore deviendront chez lui ce que la tradition latine tardive nomme les post-prédicaments. Mais la liste platonicienne des affections (pathè) n’est pas la liste aristotélicienne des catégories et les catégories sont des acceptions de l’Être desquelles les affections ne constituent qu’une espèce, alors que les affections (pathè) de la liste platonicienne évoquent plutôt des « lieux » dialectiques (sans pour autant pouvoir être identifiés aux topoi aristotéliciens).
Parménide use du même mot sêma dans un contexte apparemment plus anodin, dans la deuxième partie de son poème consacrée à la description du monde sensible :
« Tu sauras la nature de l’éther et tous les signes (sèmata) dans l’éther
Et de la torche pure du soleil bien brillant les œuvres invisibles »
(D.-K. B 10,10)
Les signes désignent ici vraisemblablement les étoiles. La première interprétation qui vient à l’esprit est la fonction des étoiles dans la navigation antique, telle qu’elle est illustrée par l’Odyssée. Mais il faut comprendre ce qui rend possible une telle fonction.
On trouve chez Héraclite une occurrence comparable à celle de Parménide, dans un texte d’Anatolius d’Alexandrie, un péripatéticien qui enseigna à Alexandrie entre 230 et 300 après J.C., intitulé Sur la Décade :
« Suivant la raison des périodes, le nombre 7 est assemblé selon la lune mais il est divisé selon l’Ourse pour signe de l’immortelle mémoire (ajqanavtou Mnhvmhç çhmeivw) » (126a)
Ne nous laissons pas arrêter au fait que Parménide emploie le mot sêma là où Héraclite dit sèmeion. Il semble que la différence ne soit pas pertinente ici. Parménide s’exprime en vers comme Homère et Hésiode chez lesquels on ne trouve jamais sèmeion, contrairement à Hérodote qui écrit en prose et emploie les deux mots.
Le contexte général du fragment est astronomique. Héraclite opposerait dans ce fragment les quatre phases de sept jours de la lune dont la progression est naturelle aux sept étoiles qui composent la constellation de l’ourse et sont divisées. Il s’agirait pour lui de faire la différence entre deux modalités du nombre 7. Mais ce qui nous intéresse ici c’est le sens du terme signe.
La grande ourse ne disparaît jamais de l’horizon, ce qui fait d’elle le témoin de tous les événements du monde. À ce titre elle est un signe de mémoire. La relation entre le signe, la mémoire et le temps est traditionnelle. Par exemple, dans la Théogonie (vers 500) la pierre que Zeus a fait avaler par ruse à Cronos et qu’il a placée à Delphes est un « signe qui est depuis longtemps » (çh'm∆ e[men ejxopivçw). Le meilleur exemple de cette relation est le sens traditionnel de sêma comme ce qui indique la présence d’un « tombeau ». Or, chez Homère, le tombeau ne doit pas être vu seulement par les contemporains mais par les générations futures (Iliade 24, vers 80-84).
Mais l’étoile peut être aussi un signe prémonitoire. Chez Homère au chant 24 de l’Iliade, Achille qui bondit devant Priam, le roi des Troyens est comparé à un astre :
« dont les feux éblouissants éclatent au milieu des étoiles innombrables, au plein cœur de la nuit. On l’appelle le chien d’Orion et son éclat est sans pareil. Mais il n’est qu’un sinistre signe (sêma) tant il porte de fièvres pour les pauvres humains » (vers 28-31).
Hérodote évoque lui aussi les « signes (sèmeia) précurseurs de calamités » (6.27.2, 9). Ainsi, le signe garde la mémoire de quelque chose ou annonce quelque chose, comme le cri de la grue qui donne le signal des semailles (Travaux et Jours, 450) ou le bruit du tonnerre, signal envoyé par Zeus (Bouclier, 56). Mais font aussi partie de ces signes, les messages du feu qu’envoient et retransmettent les lampadophores : « La clarté de la torche fait signe au loin sur le flot de l’Euripe aux veilleurs de Messapios. Ils éclairent alors et transmettent plus loin ayant mis le feu à un tas de vieilles bruyères » (Eschyle, Agamemnon, 293).
Dans toutes ces occurrences, le signe est conçu comme répondant à une intention dans un message ou une annonce dans les limites d’un procès de communication. Dans ce cas, le signe consiste à se servir d’une chose pour lui donner un autre sens que celui qu’elle est censée posséder.
Or, il existe une autre sorte de signe, plus difficile à cerner, parce qu’elle est implicite, le signe n’étant pas oblitéré par le mot sêma. Il s’agit en effet du signe en tant que marque apposée sur une chose pour l’enregistrer et la manifester dans un nom qui la désigne. Dans ce cas, le signe détermine une élaboration de type scientifique ou cognitif qui ne se limite pas à la communication, comme on peut le constater chez Hérodote.
En effet, si nous examinons la manière dont Hérodote use du verbe sêmainô nous pouvons découvrir qu’il peut servir parfois simplement à consigner, marquer, indicier ou noter. Dans ce cas, le verbe est au futur : sêmaneo. Tout se passe alors comme si décrire une chose c’était la noter ou encore en donner l’expression pertinente dans un système de signes. Une sensation acquiert sa dimension cognitive à partir du moment où elle entre dans un système de signes, où elle est marquée, au même titre que dans un rituel, on marque les animaux (Enquêtes, 2, 38, 9). Dans cette perspective, les discours de l’historia constituent un ensemble ou une classe de signes dans le cadre duquel ou de laquelle on énonce telle ou telle chose, par exemple les mesures de l’Égypte « je vais maintenant signifier (sêmaneô) la distance depuis la mer vers le milieu de la terre, jusqu’à Thèbes» (2, 9, 8). De même, on signifie une cause ou encore l’auteur d’une initiative, («Cyrus avait renversé et fait prisonnier cet Astyage (…) pour une cause que je signifierai dans la suite de ces discours (di’ aitièn tèn egô en toîsi opisô logoisi sêmaneô) » 1, 75, 3 ; di’allèn aitièn tèn egô en toîsi opisthe logoisi sêmaneô » 7, 213, 12 ; ou aussi : « J’avancerai dans le discours après avoir signifié celui qui, autant que je sache moi-même, a pris le premier l’initiative d’actes injustes contre les Grecs (ton de oîda autos prôton huparxanta adikôn ergôn es tous Hellènas, toûton sèmènas probèsomai es to prosô toû logoû) » 1, 5, 11-13. L’élaboration désignée par le verbe sêmaneô a lieu en tois logoisi, dans les discours. Cette expression peut se retrouver avec d’autres verbes tels que « révéler » : « je le révélerai plus loin dans mes discours (en heteroisi logoisi dèlôsô, 1, 106, 9 ; ou mnèmèn poièsomai : « dont je produirai la mémoire dans les discours sur l’Assyrie (tôn en toîsi Assurioisi logoisi mnèmèn poièsomai, 1, 184, 2) ; ou aphègèsomai « événements que je rapporterai plus longuement dans mes discours libyques (tèn egô mezonôs men en toîsi libukoîsi logoisi aphègèsomai, 2, 161, 9)») ou encore apodexô : « je démontrerai dans la suite de ces discours (kai en toîsi opisthe logoisi apodexô, 5, 22, 3)». La caractéristique des logoi dans ce type de formule en toîsi logoisi. est de désigner un ensemble homogène (les discours « libyques » ou « assyriens» etc. ), comme si le langage de l’historia était lui-même une classe (la classe des choses vues et sues : 1, p, 1 ; 2, 99, 1), par laquelle une chose prend sens à y être insérée, autrement dit une classe de signes.
On trouve une formule semblable (et unique) chez Homère au chant 12 de l’Odyssée. Circé déclare qu’elle va signifier et indiquer à Ulysse chaque point de la route de son nostos (vers 25-26 : autar egô deixô hodon ède hekasta sêmanéô). Circé qui a prêté serment à Ulysse et renoncé à ses pouvoirs magiques et maléfiques (Odyssée 10, vers 345) se met alors à guider Ulysse. Remarquons que sêmaneô est suivi du pronom indéfini neutre pluriel hekasta qui explicite le contenu du nom singulier hodon : il s’agit de présenter chacun des dangers qui jalonnent cette route afin de permettre de les éviter (voir la proposition finale hina mè), en en faisant des éléments significatifs. De plus le verbe sêmaneô est précédé du verbe au futur, deixô : j’indiquerai la route. Ce verbe est notamment employé à l’aoriste, au chant 10, lorsque Hermès livre à Ulysse l’herbe, antidote contre la drogue de Circé : «et il m’indiqua sa nature (kai moi phusin autoû edeixe), vers 304 ». La description des éléments de l’herbe (sa racine et sa tige) est suivie de sa désignation : « molu l’appellent les dieux » (vers 305). De même, dans notre passage du chant 12, il s’agit d’indexer et de nommer les éléments de la route en les présentant un à un, comme sur une carte géographique in performance.
Hérodote « signifie » en tant qu’il manifeste une chose en la signalant, ce qui revient implicitement à la rapporter à un code de signes (tout comme la langue des dieux est un code de signes dans le passage précité du chant 10 de l’Odyssée). Une langue est ici un ensemble de caractères ou de notations qui possèdent une identité commune, une isomorphie, permettant de consigner une chose qui peut se manifester par là-même.
Car les signes doivent avant tout constituer un système isomorphe. Cette isomorphie est une propriété évidente des signes messagers dans une communication. Ainsi, les signaux faits au moyen des boucliers (6, 123, 12) qui constituent un code de communication ne peuvent remplir cette fonction qu’en étant un système isomorphe de marquage inhérent à la notion de code. Il en est de même pour les signes faits au moyen de gestes : « et comme ils ne comprenaient pas la langue de chacun et qu’elle (l’amazone) ne pouvait pas lui parler, elle lui signifia de la main qu’il devrait revenir le jour suivant au même endroit » (4, 113, 2 ; 4, 113, 9). On a conscience de l’isomorphisme possible entre deux systèmes de signes.
Or, le même isomorphisme joue dans la fonction enregistreuse ou notatrice des signes.
Dans ce type de signes, lorsque quelqu’un croit mieux discerner ou voir qu’un autre, qu’il est capable de divulguer une information, il signifie (1, 89, 5 ; 1, 209, 14 : hôs de taûta atrekeôs oîda, egô sêmaneô : « comme je sais ces choses sans erreur, moi je signifierai »). Pour apprécier la dimension propre au signe dans ce cas, il ne faut pas se concentrer sur la situation de communication et se limiter à dire que signifier c’est communiquer un savoir dont on possède le code. Signifier dans ce cas, c’est informer au sens où l’on se montre capable de dénoter un signe, c’est-à-dire de montrer qu’une chose prend sens dans un système de signes où elle a été notée et repérée.
Si quelqu’un, par exemple, n’a aucune connaissance de quelque chose qu’il n’a jamais vue, on va lui signifier en recourant à une image et donc à un autre code isomorphe : « pour en donner une idée à qui n’en a jamais vu, je signifie (sêmaineô) qu’elles sont l’image (mimèsis) d’un pygmée », 3, 37, 8). À cet égard, si renseigner quelqu’un c’est assurément se servir d’un signe pour lui communiquer quelque chose, c’est en lui montrant à quel système de signes doit être référée telle chose et donc la signifier au sens de dénoter (5, 54, 5). Ces signes s’apprennent : il faut apprendre à voir, à comprendre, à reconnaître les signes que donne le feu (Prométhée, vers 498). Bien voir, bien discerner, c’est être eusèmon, en opposition au verbe lanthanein : « rien ne m’échappe » (Suppliantes, vers 714). Lorsqu’on veut indiquer à autrui un lieu qu’il ne reconnaît pas, où il est égaré, on signifie (Prométhée, vers 564) : cela ne veut pas dire seulement qu’on lui communique une information au sens d’un message mais qu’on l’informe en ce qu’on replace pour lui le lieu dans son site pertinent, un ensemble de signes pertinent. De même, une expérience se signifie : une ville prise se signale par une fumée (Agamemnon 818). Dans l’Hymne homérique à Dionysos, Dionysos qui apparaît successivement sous la forme de vin parfumé, d’un lion rugissant et d’un ours agressif, se manifeste ainsi par les signes qui le caractérisent (sèmata phainôn, vers 46), ses œuvres étonnantes (thaumata erga ).
Revenons aux exemples d’Héraclite, d’Hésiode ou d’Homère que nous avons notés plus haut. Dans ces exemples le signe n’est pas considéré du point de vue de l’enregistrement d’une donnée prenant place dans un ensemble propre, mais du seul point de vue de l’intention à laquelle il renvoie. Une étoile n’est pas alors « manifestée » par le signe qui la dénote ou la désigne, mais au contraire elle passe au second plan pour indiquer autre chose : un message, un présage, un souvenir. Elle devient ce que nous pourrions appeler une connotation, un symbole.
Ainsi, au chant II de l’Iliade le sêma désigne le serpent qui apparaît aux Achéens à Aulis et dévore huit passereaux et leur mère avant de disparaître (vers 308 sq.). Alors que le signe plonge les Achéens dans la stupéfaction muette, le devin est capable de « parler pour les dieux (theopropeôn). Le signe envoyé par Zeus pour signifier (sèmainei) sa pensée, donne lieu à une sorte d’analogie numérologique : les huit passereaux et leur mère correspondent aux neuf années de guerre contre Troie. C’est l’interprétation que ce type de signes exige. Interpréter, c’est pénétrer au-delà des apparences que peut offrir tel code non pertinent (Eschyle, Prométhée, vers 842). Un oracle est privé de sens (asèmos) lorsqu’il est ambigu, qu’il oscille, tergiverse entre différents codes (aiolostomous, Eschyle, Prométhée vers 662).
Le corollaire de cette conception du signe est que le signe peut être manipulé, ou crypté.
De cette acception du signe relève le célèbre fragment B 93 d’Héraclite, où signifier (sèmainein) est distingué de dire (legein) et de cacher (kruptein). Le dieu envoie des signes qui renvoient à sa volonté, à son intention, comme chez Hérodote, (1.116.17). Il émet des « symboles ». La pertinence du verbe signifier est rendue par comparaison négative avec les deux autres verbes. Signifier ce n’est ni dire sous forme de logos, autrement dit dire, argumenter, comme le font les hommes par opposition aux dieux, ni crypter le signe comme dans les exemples de stéganographie (Hérodote, Enquêtes, 5, 35, 7), c’est s’exprimer par symboles à interpréter.
Ces deux manières de comprendre le signe ne doivent pas être confondues. Il y a le signe en tant que méthode où le signe est la marque d’une classe qui recense ou enregistre une chose dans un ensemble codifié pour la manifester comme telle, et la désigne comme par une étiquette, et il y a le signe en tant que renvoi à une intention, où une chose est détournée de son sens propre pour représenter autre chose. La science change alors de sens : signifier ce n’est plus enregistrer dans des signes, consigner ou désigner, c’est chercher derrière le signe un sens qui, s’il n’est pas nécessairement crypté, n’est en tout cas pas évident et qu’il faut interpréter.
Il semble, en vertu de ces remarques, que le terme sèmata tel que l’emploie Parménide au fragment B 10 se place dans cette deuxième dimension des signes. Car les étoiles dans l’éther sont dites des signes, ce en quoi elles perdent leur désignation propre, ce qui est précisément la preuve qu’elles servent à indiquer autre chose qu’elles-mêmes.
Outre cette occurrence, Parménide use encore d’un autre terme relatif aux signes : episèmon (la marque qui signale, l’emblème, l’insigne).
« C’est ainsi, vois-tu, que selon l’opinion ces choses naquirent et qu’elles sont maintenant,
et qu’ensuite à partir de là elles finiront après avoir crû.
Sur elles les hommes ont apposé à chacune un nom qui en est l’insigne (episèmon) » D.-K. B 19
Ces vers se situent à la fin de la deuxième partie du poème, consacrée à la vision erronée des hommes. Chez Hérodote, un épisèmon désigne l’insigne ou l’emblème, le blason, par exemple les insignes sculptés sur un sceptre (pomme, rose, aigle, 1, 195, 8). Parménide compare les noms donnés par les hommes aux emblèmes ou aux insignes qui figurent en relief sur les boucliers. Or un tel signe renferme une intention, un sous-entendu (désigné par le substantif huponoia, chez Euripide, Phéniciennes, vers 1130-1134).
Dans les Sept contre Thèbes qu’on peut considérer comme la pièce d’Eschyle consacrée aux signes sur les boucliers, on peut constater qu’à partir du moment où un signe est devenu quelque chose de non évident qui peut être crypté et dont il faut percer le sens, on prend conscience de l’incorporéalité du signe (ce qui sera l’une des problématiques de la pensée stoïcienne). On a conscience que si un signe n’est pas une chose réelle, sa pertinence même réside dans son rapport au réel. Un bouclier porte une effigie qui cherche à susciter la peur. Or, pour conjurer cette peur, il suffit de souligner la dimension imaginaire du signe (les emblèmes, sèmata, ne causent pas de blessure, 398) ; un signe sur le bouclier prendrait son sens si le signe se réalisait (404 ; 518). Ainsi, on peut refuser de mettre un signe sur son bouclier et cela implique que l’on paraisse être en réalité ce qu’un signe ne ferait que représenter (« il veut non paraître héroïque mais l’Être », 591). Le signe peut donc être véridique ou trompeur (Agamemnon, 497). Ainsi, en employant le terme episèmon, Parménide se situe dans une perspective que l’on peut qualifier de critique ou sceptique.
Une dernière occurrence doit retenir notre attention, celle du fragment B8, vers 55:
« et d’autre part, ils ont divisé l’aspect en contraires et institué des signes (sèmat’ ethento) qui les séparent les uns des autres »
Quand Parménide dit que les hommes ont institué des signes qui séparent les choses les unes des autres, cela implique que les hommes ont défini des signes conventionnellement. Ce qui nous conduit aux signes symboliques et à leur double dimension tantôt vraie tantôt fausse. C’est pourquoi les hommes sont dans l’erreur (vers 54). Parce qu’ils diffractent et déforment l’Être, les noms qui sont des signes conventionnels et symboliques sont aussi fallacieux.
Pourtant, en dépit du statut ambivalent et au moins critique qu’il semble accorder aux signes, noms épisèmes ou signaux fallacieux, c’est par le terme sèmata que Parménide désigne la langue de l’Être comme en témoigne le fragment B 8 précité. La route, la piste ou la voie de l’Être est jalonnée de signes qu’il faut interpréter de sorte que les signes de l’Être ne sont pas de simples dénotations ou désignations, mais bien des symboles selon l’acception que nous avons définie. La science de l’Être est une « herméneutique ». Parménide ne semble donc pas gêné d’user de ces signes qui pourtant peuvent conduire les hommes à l’erreur.
Or, comme de nombreux interprètes l’ont relevé, Parménide non seulement écrit et pense dans la langue d’Homère, mais va jusqu’à penser l’Être sur fond d’identification à Ulysse. On peut montrer que les images qui servent à décrire l’Être sont celles que l’on trouve dans l’Odyssée pour décrire Ulysse : par exemple, l’Être est maintenu immobile dans des liens comme Ulysse lié au mât dans l’épisode des Sirènes. Cette hypothèse de lecture qui renverse nos habitudes de philosophes en plaçant la philosophie et la poésie en vis à vis est fructueuse parce qu’elle nous permet d’assister comme en direct à la naissance de la philosophie dans le poème de Parménide. Il se pourrait bien que cette hypothèse nous renseigne aussi sur la façon dont Parménide comprend les signes. Ainsi, les sèmata de la route de l’Être pourraient trouver leur correspondant dans le vers précité du chant 12 de l’Odyssée d’autant plus que l’épisode des Sirènes constitue l’un des éléments de la route désignés et signifiés par Circé. Et la ressemblance de la formule homérique avec celle que nous avons rencontrée chez Hérodote pourrait nous conduire à supposer que Parménide emploie les sèmata de la route de l’Être au premier sens du mot sêma, à savoir le signe qui désigne, consigne, note.
Pourtant les choses ne vont pas de soi et il faut être particulièrement vigilant.
Car il se trouve que toute l’Odyssée a pour thème ce qu’on appelle la reconnaissance d’Ulysse qui rentre de Troie à Ithaque après 20 ans d’absence et est méconnaissable. Les signes y occupent une place obsédante et problématique à tel point, qu’on a pu évoquer, dès l’Antiquité, un scepticisme d’Homère.
Euryclée, la nourrice qui a découvert le retour d’Ulysse à Ithaque, tente d’en persuader son épouse Pénélope qui reste incrédule :
« Mais va ! un autre signe tout à fait distinct (sêma ariphradès) je te dirai » (chant XXIII vers 73)
Il s’agit de la blessure (oulèn) qu’un sanglier fit à Ulysse lors d’une chasse :
« cette blessure que jadis lui fit le sanglier à la blanche défense
en la lavant, je l’ai distinguée (phrasamèn) » (74- 75).
L’expérience d’Euryclée est décrite par le verbe phrazein qui signifie à la forme moyenne, remarquer, distinguer. Euryclée a remarqué la blessure, elle l’a distinguée. Le terme ariphrades qui sert à caractériser le sêma est lui-même dérivé du verbe phrazesthai. Observons que l’on peut distinguer le signe ou distinguer la blessure.
Au chant XIX de l’Odyssée (vers 381-467). Ulysse s’est présenté à la cour déguisé en étranger méconnaissable. Pénélope demande à Euryclée de lui laver les pieds comme le veut la coutume de l’hospitalité. Euryclée accepte tout en confiant l’angoisse qui l’étreint à la vue de l’étranger dont elle perçoit la ressemblance avec Ulysse (vers 382). Ulysse qui craint d’être démasqué se met alors à l’écart :
« car son cœur soudain avait craint que la vieille en lui prenant le pied
ne distingue ostensiblement la cicatrice (anaphrassaito) et que ses agissements ne soient alors montrés ostensiblement (amphada) » (390- 391).
L’expérience est à nouveau décrite par un verbe formé sur le radical du verbe phrazesthai précédé du préfixe ana- qui indique ici non la reprise mais le fait de faire la chose ostensiblement. Le vers suivant décrit précisément ce qu’Ulysse redoute :
« or, à peine à ses pieds pour lui donner le bain, elle reconnut (egnô) la blessure » (392-393).
Quelques vers plus loin, le verbe est répété :
« or la vieille femme en la touchant du plat de ses mains
la reconnut (= l’identifia, gnô) » (vers 467- 468).
Au vers 474-475, Euryclée précise :
« tu es donc Ulysse, cher enfant, et pourtant moi je ne t’ai pas reconnu (egnôn) avant d’avoir entièrement palpé mon maître tout autour ».
Euryclée veut dire qu’elle reconnaît Ulysse, son maître et « son cher enfant » une fois découverte et reconnue la cicatrice.
Au chant 24 de l’Odyssée, le père d’Ulysse, Laërte, refuse de reconnaître spontanément son fils et veut l’éprouver :
« si j’ai bien devant moi Ulysse, mon enfant, dis-moi maintenant un signe (sêma) bien distinct (ariphrades) pour que je soie persuadé (pepoîthô) » (vers 328-329).
Ulysse fait alors le récit de sa blessure en commençant par ces mots :
« cette blessure d’abord distingue-la (phrasai) de tes yeux » (vers 331).
Le récit d’Ulysse persuade Laërte :
« Mais Laërte à ces mots, sentait se dérober ses genoux et son cœur, ayant reconnu ostensiblement les signes (sèmat’ anagnontos) qu’Ulysse lui avait fait distinguer (pephrad’) pour qu’ils soient fermes (empeda) » (vers 345-346).
La situation, semblable à celle d’Euryclée, s’en différencie cependant. On retrouve une partie du même vocabulaire : Laërte exige un sêma ariphrades, un « signe distinct ». En fait, Ulysse lui en donne deux : il lui demande de distinguer (phrasai) la blessure mais ne se contente pas de cela et lui énumère les arbres que son père lui avait autrefois dédiés, ce qui est décrit à son tour par le verbe pephrade, aoriste épique de phrazein (faire distinguer).
L’expérience de reconnaissance est décrite au moyen des verbes reconnaître ostensiblement (anagnônai) et faire distinguer. Or Laërte n’est pas dit « distinguer (phrazesthai) la blessure » mais « reconnaître ostensiblement (ana-gnônai) les signes », le préverbe ana ajoutant au verbe gnônai le sens de reconnaître ostensiblement, voire publiquement. Tout porte à admettre que Laërte est simplement persuadé par le récit d’Ulysse. De la même façon, c’est dans un discours de persuasion à Pénélope, que Euryclée demande de distinguer le signe. En effet, lorsque Euryclée fait elle-même l’expérience de la reconnaissance d’Ulysse, ce n’est pas un signe qu’elle déclare reconnaître mais la cicatrice d’Ulysse. Il apparaît donc que les signes relèvent du discours de persuasion dont ils constituent un élément protocolaire. C’est que montre clairement le texte suivant : au chant XIX, Pénélope demande à Ulysse qui lui cache son identité réelle en prétendant être un hôte qui aurait reçu Ulysse, quels vêtements celui-ci portait, afin d’éprouver s’il dit vrai (eteon) (vers 215-219). Ulysse répond en décrivant les vêtements d’Ulysse et en particulier l’agrafe en or de son manteau, un ouvrage d’art unique (221-248). Pénélope est persuadée et son expérience est décrite de la manière suivante :
« ayant reconnu les signes (sèmat’ anagnousèi) qu’Ulysse lui avait fait distinguer (pephrad’) pour qu’ils soient fermes (empeda) » (vers 250).
On retrouve la même formule que pour Laërte : reconnaître ostensiblement les signes en relation avec le verbe distinguer, c’est identifier parce qu’on est persuadé (même en situation de mensonge flagrant, puisque Pénélope est persuadé que l’agrafe est le signe d’Ulysse alors que celui-ci est devant elle sans qu’elle le reconnaisse).
Au chant XXI, Ulysse ne s’est pas encore démasqué devant le porcher Eumée et le bouvier. Après avoir éprouvé leur fidélité, il se démasque.
Et il profère la formule :
« je vais montrer un autre signe tout à fait distinct (sêma ariphrades )
afin que vous me reconnaissiez bien et m’accordiez votre crédit
(eu gnôton pistôthèton) » (217-218).
Ulysse dévoile alors sa cicatrice. L’effet sur les deux serviteurs est décrit ainsi :
« lorsqu’ils l’eurent regardée (esidetèn) et qu’ils eurent bien distingué (eû ephrassanto) le maître » (222).
Les verbes employés pour décrire l’expérience des serviteurs sont eisidein et eu phrazesthai. Les serviteurs regardent la cicatrice et distinguent bien (eu) le maître, ils identifient la cicatrice puis le maître mais il n’est pas dit qu’ils identifient le signe, autrement dit, ils ne se situent pas dans un protocole de persuasion.
Au chant XXIII, Pénélope déclare que si c’est vraiment (eteon) Ulysse qui est revenu à Ithaque :
«Nous nous reconnaîtrons (gnôsometh’) sans difficulté tous deux l’un l’autre » (vers 109).
Pénélope explique pourquoi dans le vers suivant :
« car il est pour nous des signes (sêmath’) que nous connaissons (idmen) tous deux bien cachés des autres » (vers 110).
Ces signes cachés des autres, ces signes cryptés pour les autres, et que les époux sont les seuls à connaître consistent en leur lit conjugal qu’Ulysse a bâti de ses mains en gardant le secret de sa confection : il a été construit à partir d’une racine d’olivier de sorte que nul ne peut le déplacer. Pénélope peut ainsi éprouver Ulysse au moyen d’une ruse. Devant lui, elle demande à Euryclée de changer le lit de place (vers 181). Si l’homme qui est devant elle est bien Ulysse, il ne manquera pas de réagir, ce qui se produit effectivement. Ulysse réagit aussitôt et raconte comment il a construit le lit, concluant son récit par ces mots : « tel est le signe (sêma) que je mets pour toi en lumière » (vers 200). Pénélope persuadée use alors de la formule requise : Ulysse lui a donné « des signes distincts (sêmata ariphradea, vers 225).
Dans ce passage, le verbe eidenai a pour objet les signes secrets. Pénélope et Ulysse se reconnaîtront grâce aux signes qu’eux seuls connaissent, mais l’expérience est encore celle d’un procès de persuasion.
Dans ces occurrences, certaines différences peuvent être établies. Laërte et la Pénélope de la première occurrence, celle de l’agrafe d’or, signalent qu’ils reconnaissent les signes (sêmat’ anagnousè ou sêmat’ anagnontos) qu’Ulysse leur fait distinguer. Comme on l’a vu, le verbe anagnônai revient à identifier ostensiblement, publiquement. Identifier publiquement les signes, c’est reconnaître au double sens contenu dans notre verbe reconnaître : identifier et être d’accord pour dire, reconnaître au sens d’accorder crédit. Laërte et la Pénélope de l’agrafe d’or reconnaissent les signes qui ont été exhibés pour les persuader, ils les distinguent en les admettant comme probants. Le signe est donc clairement lié à une procédure de persuasion. Dans un échange de paroles où il s’agit de persuader quelqu’un, la cicatrice, l’agrafe d’or deviennent les signes qui rendent crédible une allégation.
En revanche, Euryclée et les serviteurs ne sont pas dits reconnaître les signes mais leur référent, Ulysse « enfant » ou « maître ». Ce référent n’est pas le même. De plus, la Pénélope de la deuxième occurrence ne se contente pas de désigner un référent et souligne la réciprocité de la reconnaissance entre Ulysse et elle-même : « nous nous reconnaîtrons » (nôi gnôsometh’allèlôn, 108-9). On a suffisamment mis en évidence les réserves de Pénélope face à un homme qui surgit après vingt années, dans un contexte perclus de mensonges et de trahisons, où non seulement les hommes mentent, mais aussi les dieux, comme Pénélope le rappelle elle-même (23, 217-222). Pénélope ne reconnaît pas n’importe quel Ulysse, encore moins celui que magnifie Athéna (23, 156) mais celui qui saura la reconnaître elle-même, celui qui accomplira une reconnaissance interactive incluant la réciprocité.
Ces observations conduisent à la conclusion suivante : l’opacité référentielle est le corrélat du signe de persuasion. La dimension persuasive et publique du signe est en raison directe de l’opacité de son référent, car la reconnaissance du référent est singulière. Cette conclusion peut être confirmée par deux autres exemples de reconnaissance. Le premier concerne Hélène au chant 4 de l’Odyssée. Alors qu’Ulysse s’est fait semblable à un esclave qui arpente incognito les rues de Troie (oikêi eoikôs, 245), Hélène déclare : « egô de in oiè anegnôn toîon eonta (moi seule je le reconnus tel qu’il était » (250). Hélène n’a pas besoin de signes, en dépit du déguisement d’Ulysse. La deuxième occurrence est aussi ce qui constitue pour les commentateurs, l’un des passages les plus émouvants de l’Odyssée :
Au chant 17 (vers 290-327). Ulysse déguisé en mendiant se dirige en compagnie d’Eumée le porcher vers son palais où l’on est en train de préparer un banquet.
« Pendant qu’ils échangeaient ces paroles entre eux
un chien qui était couché là, dressa la tête et les oreilles ;
c’était Argos, le chien d’Ulysse à l’esprit d’endurance,
qu’il avait nourri lui-même autrefois sans avoir le temps d’en profiter
car il était parti vers la sainte Ilion.
Autrefois les jeunes gens l’emmenaient chasser le cerf, le lièvre et les chèvres sauvages ;
Mais aujourd’hui en l’absence de son maître, il gisait, délaissé, étendu sur le fumier des mulets et des bœufs qui s’entassaient devant la porte,
En attendant que les serviteurs d’Ulysse l’emportent pour fumer son grand domaine
c’est là que gisait le chien Argos rongé par la vermine
Dès qu’il aperçut (enoèsen) Ulysse tout près de lui

Quant à Argos, son destin fut la mort noire qui le saisit d’un coup après avoir revu (idont’) Ulysse au bout de vingt années » (vers 327).
Les deux verbes employés pour décrire l’expérience du chien sont noeîn et idein. Noeîn signifie se mettre dans le noos, dans l’esprit. Sous prétexte que ce verbe ne peut pas encore avoir le sens qu’il aura dans la République de Platon, on peut être tenté de ne lui attribuer qu’une signification sensorielle, de plus mieux adaptée à un animal. Il se trouve que noeîn signifie flairer. Argos flairerait tout simplement Ulysse. Pourtant, le deuxième verbe, idein qui signifie voir est employé pour caractériser la vision du chien tout comme celle d’Ulysse, ce qui permet d’invalider une interprétation réductrice.
On peut montrer que, loin d’être simplement sensitive, l’expérience du chien est cognitive, conformément au plein sens du verbe noeîn, avoir dans l’esprit une pensée, comprendre. C’est ce que permet d’affirmer un passage du chant XXI que nous avons cité. Ulysse ne s’est pas encore démasqué devant le porcher Eumée et le bouvier. Pour éprouver leur fidélité, il leur demande quel parti ils suivraient entre celui d’Ulysse et celui des Prétendants. Tous deux répondent qu’ils suivraient Ulysse. Le texte exprime l’effet de leur réponse sur Ulysse :
« quand il eut reconnu ostensiblement leur pensée véridique (noon nèmerte’ anegnô) » (vers 205). Noos exprime quelque chose comme le projet, l’intention du porcher et du bouvier à l’égard d’Ulysse. Il y a donc dans le verbe noeîn un contenu de pensée. Noeîn signifie penser mais par l’entremise des sens, qu’il s’agisse du flair ou de la vue.
Le chien reconnaît Ulysse sans que personne ne s’en aperçoive sauf Ulysse. Il s’agit donc d’une reconnaissance intime qui peut être comparée à la reconnaissance de Pénélope, intime elle-aussi, à la différence près que cette intimité n’exclut pas les signes, fussent-ils secrets. Car le chien n’a pas eu besoin de signes du tout, sans pour autant disposer des pouvoirs divins d’Hélène (Odyssée 4, 122). Il y a eu un contact sans paroles, et parfaitement réciproque en dépit de sa brièveté pathétique.
La leçon qui se dégage alors est qu’il faut distinguer entre la reconnaissance par signalement et symboles et la reconnaissance par contact à laquelle n’accède parfaitement que le chien.
Les sèmata de l’Odyssée relèvent à l’évidence d’une tradition herméneutique des signes. La cicatrice est le signe d’un référent opaque que le signe ne parvient pas à absolutiser. C’est semble-t-il cette tradition du signe-renvoi, du signe « herméneutique », qui se trouve problématisée dans l’Odyssée, bien avant Sextus Empiricus qui montrera que le chien Argos a été capable de reconnaître immédiatement Ulysse revenu d'un exil qui a duré vingt ans, alors que les humains même les plus familiers d'Ulysse ont eu besoin de preuves incessantes et de raisonnements.
Si Parménide pense dans la langue de l’Odyssée, il n’ignore certainement pas la réflexion approfondie qui y est développée à propos des signes. Lorsque la déesse qui est l’énonciatrice de Parménide, prend la parole au discours direct, c’est notamment le verbe phrazô qu’elle emploie (B2, 6), comme Ulysse : elle « fait distinguer » à son destinataire dans une perspective de persuasion (B2, 4) où ce qui n’est pas reconnaissable ne peut être distingué (oute gar an gnoiès /…/oute phrasais, B2, 7-8). La déesse de Parménide, qui se montre, comme Ulysse, capable d’énoncer un kosmon apatèlon (B8, 52) et d’affirmer un diakosmon eoikota panta (B8, 60) ne dit jamais comme Circé dans l’Odyssée sêmaneô ni deixô. En dépit de l’emploi de la métaphore du chemin comme, par exemple, chez Hérodote, elle ne guide pas Parménide en lui nommant un à un les éléments de la route de l’Être et les sèmata qu’elle énonce sonnent comme des preuves.
En choisissant d’appeler sèmata les propriétés de l’Être, alors qu’il donne à ce terme une connotation plutôt négative, Parménide se placerait donc dans une perspective langagière et rhétorique des signes, déterminée par une pragmatique énonciative. Il suggérerait ainsi une différence infranchissable entre le discours sur l’Être et l’Être lui-même auquel n’accèderait que la pensée.
Or, n’est-ce pas cette différence de type pragmatique qui est entièrement perdue de vue dès qu’on croit pouvoir dire les affections (pathè) de l’Être ? Car pour admettre qu’il peut y avoir un discours des affections de l’Être, il ne suffit pas de croire comme Socrate dans le Cratyle, qu’il est possible de partir des choses elles-mêmes pour juger de la pertinence des signes que sont les mots. Il faut surtout avoir définitivement forclos la perspective énonciative et relative propre aux signes, en lui substituant la croyance (ou l’illusion) en un énoncé absolu, celui que Socrate appelle de ses vœux au livre III de la République, et qu’il nomme « diégèse simple ».

In this excerpt, in which he expresses the thought of the monolithic Being, uniform and circular, Parmenides globally points out the positive or negative properties of the Being, using the term that we translate by sign, sêma.
Why this term rather than another? Neither Plato nor Aristotle, who both assumed the heritage of Parmenides, were to use this term anymore, but used the word pathè (affections). Thus, the term pathos recurs in the Parmenides (148b4 ; 157b4 ; b6 ; 159a1, a2,a7) in which occurs a list. And some of the properties designed by the term pathè were to become in the Sophist intelligible shapes. And some members of the platonician list of pathè are found again in Aristotle’s Categories, whereas others yet were to become in his regard what the belated Latin tradition named the post-predicaments. But the platonician list of affections (pathè) is not the aristotelian list of categories and the categories are acceptations of the Being of which the affections are only a species, whereas the affections (pathè) of the platonician list rather evoke dialectical « places » (without being identified to the aristotelian topoi).
Parmenides uses the same word sêma in an apparently more trivial context, in the second half of his poem dedicated to the description of the perceptible world:
« Tu sauras la nature de l’éther et tous les signes (sèmata) dans l’éther
Et de la torche pure du soleil bien brillant les œuvres invisibles »
(D.-K. B 10,10) (« You will get to know the nature of ether and all of the signs (sèmata) in ether And the invisible works of the bright sun’s pure torch”)
The signs here designate in all likelihood the stars. The first interpretation that comes to mind is the function of the stars in ancient navigation, such as it is pictured by The Odyssey. But it is necessary to understand what makes possible such a function.
One finds in Heraclites an occurrence comparable to that in Parmenides, in a text by Anatolius of Alexandria, a peripetetic who taught in Alexandria between 230 and 300 after J.C., entitled On the Decade and the Numbers within It:
« Suivant la raison des périodes, le nombre 7 est assemblé selon la lune mais il est divisé selon l’Ourse pour signe de l’immortelle mémoire (ajqanavtou Mnhvmhç çhmeivw) » (126a) (« According to the cause of the periods, the number 7 is assembled depending on the moon but is divided up according to the Bear constellation as a sign of the immortal memory »)
Let us not be hampered by the fact that Parmenides uses the word sêma where Heraclites says sèmeion. It seems that the difference bears no significance here. Parmenides expresses himself in verse as do Homer and Hesiod in whom we can never find sèmeion, contrary to Herodotus who writes in prose and uses both words.
The general context of the fragment is that of astronomy. Heraclites would oppose in this fragment the four seven-day phases of the moon whose progression is inherent to the seven stars that make up the Bear constellation and that are divided. For him, it would be a matter of making the difference between two modalities of the number 7. But what is of interest to us is the meaning of the term sign.
The Great Bear never disappears from the horizon, a fact that enables it to witness all the events happening in the world. For that purpose, it is a sign that stands for memory. The relation between the sign, memory and time is a traditional one. For example, in the Theogony (verse 500) the stone that Zeus has made Cronus swallow through trickery and that he placed in Delphi is a « sign that has been in existence for a long time » (çh'm∆ e[men ejxopivçw). The best example of this relation is the traditional meaning of sêma as being that which points to the presence of a « tomb ». Now, in Homer, the tomb must not be viewed only by contemporaries but by future generations (The Iliad 24, verse 80-84).
But the star can also be a premonitory sign. In Homer, in book 24 of the Iliad, Achilles, who leaps in front of Priam, the king of the Troyans is compared to a star:
« whose dazzling lights burst in the midst of numberless stars, in the very heart of the night. It is called the dog of Orion and its brightness has no equal. But it is only an ominous sign (sêma) as it brings so many fevers to the poor human beings » (verse 28-31).
Herodotus also mentions the « forerunning signs (sèmeia) of calamities » (6.27.2, 9). Thus, the sign preserves the memory of something or foretells something, just as the call of the crane which is the signal for the start of seedtime (Works and Days, 450) or the sound of thunder, a signal sent by Zeus (The Shield of Heracles, 56). But the fire messages are also part of these signs, being sent and resent by torch-bearers: « The light from the torch signals far off on the Eurip river to the watchmen of Messapios. They shed light then and transmit the light further, having set fire to a heap of old heather » (Aeschyles, Agamemnon, 293).
In all of these occurrences, the sign is conceived as answering an intention in a message or an announcement within the limits of a communication process. In this case, the sign consists in using a thing in order to confer to it another meaning than the one it is supposed to own.
Now, there is another type of sign, more difficult to grasp, because it is implicit, since the sign is not removed by the word sêma. We are referring, indeed, to the sign as being a mark affixed on a thing to record it and manifest it by a term that designates it. In this case, the sign defines an elaboration of a scientific or cognitive type that is not limited to communication, as can be observed in Herodotus.
Indeed, if we examine the manner in which Herodotus uses the verb sêmainô, we may discover that it can be used at times simply to consign, mark, index or note. In this case, the verb uses the future tense: sêmaneo. It all happens then as though describing a thing was the same as writing it down or still providing its pertinent expression within a system of signs. A sensation acquires its cognitive dimension from the moment it enters a system of signs, when it is marked, just as in a ritual, during which one marks animals (Inquiries, 2, 38, 9). Within this perspective, the discourses of the historia constitute a set or a class of signs within the scope of which we can articulate such or such a thing, for example the measurements of Egypt « I will now signify (sêmaneô) the distance from the sea to the middle of the earth, unto Thebes» (2, 9, 8). Likewise, we may signify a cause or yet the author of an initiative, («Cyrus had thrown over and imprisoned this Astyagus (…) for a reason that I will signify in the sequel to these discourses (di’ aitièn tèn egô en toîsi opisô logoisi sêmaneô) » 1, 75, 3 ; di’allèn aitièn tèn egô en toîsi opisthe logoisi sêmaneô » 7, 213, 12 ; or also : « I will move forward in my discourse after having signified the one who, as far as I know, was the first to initiate unjust deeds against the Greeks (ton de oîda autos prôton huparxanta adikôn ergôn es tous Hellènas, toûton sèmènas probèsomai es to prosô toû logoû) » 1, 5, 11-13. The elaboration designated by the verb sêmaneô takes place en tois logoisi, within the discourses. This expression may be found again used with other verbs such as « reveal » : « I will reveal it further down in my discourses (en heteroisi logoisi dèlôsô, 1, 106, 9 ; ou mnèmèn poièsomai : « the memory of which I will produce within the discourses on Assyria (tôn en toîsi Assurioisi logoisi mnèmèn poièsomai, 1, 184, 2) ; or aphègèsomai « events that I will report at length within my Lybian discourses (tèn egô mezonôs men en toîsi libukoîsi logoisi aphègèsomai, 2, 161, 9)») or yet apodexô : « I will demonstrate within the sequel to these discourses (kai en toîsi opisthe logoisi apodexô, 5, 22, 3)». The characteristic of the logoi in this type of formula en toîsi logoisi is to designate a homogeneous whole (the « Lybian » or « Assyrian» discourses, etc.), as though the language of historia were itself a class (the class of things seen and known: 1, p, 1 ; 2, 99, 1), through which a thing takes its meaning by being inserted into this class, in other words, a class of signs.
A similar (and unique) formula is found in Homer, in book 12 of the Odyssey. Circe declares that she will signify and indicate to Ulysses each point of the road of his nostos (verse 25-26 : autar egô deixô hodon ède hekasta sêmanéô). Circe, who has given her word to Ulysses and given up her magic and evil powers (The Odyssey 10, verse 345), thereafter starts to guide Ulysses. Let us note that sêmaneô is followed by the indefinite plural neutral pronoun hekasta which renders explicit the content of the singular noun hodon: it is a matter of presenting each of the dangers that are scattered on this road in order to be able to avoid them (see the final proposal hina mè), by turning them into significant items. Moreover, the verb sêmaneô is preceded by the verb in the future tense, deixô: I will show the way. This verb is mainly used in the aorist tense, Book 10, when Hermes provides Ulysses with the herb, an antidote against Circe’s drug: «and he showed me its nature (kai moi phusin autoû edeixe), verse 304 ». The description of the herb elements (its root and its stem) is followed by its designation: «the gods call it molu » (verse 305). Likewise, in our passage in Book 12, it is important to index and name the elements on the road by presenting them one by one, as on a geographical map in performance.
Herodotus « signifies » in so far as he manifests a thing by signaSling its existence, which implicitly boils down to referring it to a code of signs (just as the language of the gods is a code of signs in the aforementioned passage of Book 10 of the Odyssey). A language is here defined as a set of characters or of notations that share a common identity, an isomorphy, enabling to consign in writing a thing that can manifest itself through its own self.
Because, before everything else, the signs must constitute an isomorphous system. This isomorphy is an evident property of the messenging signs in a communication. Thus, the signs achieved by means of the shields (6, 123, 12) that constitute a communication code can only fulfill this function by being an isomorphous system of marking inherent to the notion of code. The same is true of signs achieved by means of gestures : « and as they did not understand the language of each of them and that she (the amazone) could not speak to him, she indicated to him with a sign of her hand that he should come back the next day at the same place » (4, 113, 2 ; 4, 113, 9). We are aware of the possible isomorphism between both systems of signs.
Now, the same isomorphy has a role in the recording or noting function of the signs.
In this type of signs, when someone believes that he can better understand or see than another, that he is able to disclose an information, he signifies (1, 89, 5 ; 1, 209, 14 : hôs de taûta atrekeôs oîda, egô sêmaneô : « as I know these things unmistakenly, I will signify »). In order to appreciate the dimension specific to the sign in this case, we must not focus on the communication situation and limit ourselves to saying that the art of communication is a knowledge for which we own the code. Signifying in this case, means to inform in so far as we show ourselves capable of denoting a sign, that is to say of showing that a thing takes its meaning within a system of signs in which it was noted and located.
If someone, for instance, has no knowledge of a thing he has never seen, one will signify for him by using an image and therefore another isomorphism : « to give an idea of the thing to someone who has never seen it, I signify (sêmaineô) that they are the image (mimèsis) of a pygmy », 3, 37, 8). In this respect, if informing someone is assuredly the same as using a sign to communicate to him something, it is by showing to him to which system of signs such a thing must be referred and therefore signifying it in the sense of denoting it (5, 54, 5). These signs may be learnt: it is necessary to learn how to see, understand, recognize the signs that are provided by fire (Prometheus, verse 498). To see well, to understand well, it is to be eusèmon, as opposed to the verb lanthanein : « nothing escapes my attention » (The Suppliants, verse 714). When one wishes to indicate to someone else a place that he does not recognize, in which he is lost, one signifies (Prometheus, verse 564) : this not only means that one communicates to him an information in the sense of a message but that one informs him in that one resituates for him the place within its pertinent site, a set of pertinent signs. Likewise, an experience signifies itself : a city that is defeated signals itself through a smoke (Agamemnon 818). In the
Homeric Hymn to Dionysus, Dionysus who successively appears in the form of a perfumed wine, a roaring lion or an aggressive bear, thus manifests itself through the signs that characterize him (sèmata phainôn, vers 46), its astounding works (thaumata erga ).
Let us go back to the examples of Heraclitus, Hesio or Homer that we have noted above. In these examples, the sign is not considered from the point of view of the recording of a piece of data taking place within a specific set, but taking place from the sole point of view of the intention to which it refers. A star is then not « manifested » by the sign that denotes it or designates it, but on the contrary it becomes secondary to indicate something else: a message, a presage, a remembrance. It becomes what we could call a connotation, a symbol.
Thus, in Book II of the Iliad the sêma designates the snake that appears to the Achaeans in Aulis and devours eight sparrows and their mother before disappearing (verse 308 sq.). Whereas the sign plunges the Achaeans in a mute amazement, the soothsayer is capable of « speaking for the gods (theopropeôn). The sign sent by Zeus to signify (sèmainei) his thought, gives way to a kind of numerological analogy: the eight sparrows and their mother correspond to the nine years of war against Troy. It is the type of interpretation that this type of signs requires. Interpreting means penetrating beyond appearances that may be displayed such a non-pertinent code (Aeschylus, Prometheus, verse 842). An oracle is deprived of meaning (asèmos) when it is ambiguous, when it wavers, hesitates between several codes (aiolostomous, Aeschylus, Prometheus verse 662).
The corollary for this conception of the sign is that the sign may be manipulated, or encrypted.
The famous fragment B 93 from Heraclites proceeds from this acceptation of the sign, in which signifying (sèmainein) is distinct from saying (legein) and hiding (kruptein). The god sends signs that refer to his will, his intention, as in Herodotus, (1.116.17). He sends out « symbols ». The pertinence of the verb signifying is rendered through the negative comparison with the other two verbs. Signifying means neither to say in the form of a logos, in other words saying, arguing, as is done by men as opposed to the gods, nor to encrypt the sign as in the examples of steganography (Herodotus, Inquiries, 5, 35, 7), it is to express oneself via symbols to be interpreted.
These two ways of understanding the sign must not be mistaken for one another. There is the sign as a method in which the sign is the mark of a class that makes a repertory for the thing or records the thing within a coded set in order to manifest it as such, and designate it as if with a label, and there is the sign as a reference to an intention, where a thing is diverted from its own meaning in order to represent something else. The science then changes its meaning: signifying no longer means the recording into the signs, consigning or designating, it is looking behind the sign for a meaning which, if it is not necessarily encrypted, is in any case not self-evident and must be interpreted.
It seems, that in accordance with these comments, the term sèmata as used by Parmenides in fragment B, 10 is set in this second dimension of signs. Because the stars in the ether are called signs, that in which they lose their own designation, which is precisely the proof that they are used to indicate something other than themselves.
Beyond this occurrence, Parmenides uses still another term related to the signs: episèmon (the mark which signals, the emblem, the insignia).
« It is that way, can you see, that according to the opinion these things were born and are now what they are,
And that hereafter, from there on they will end after having grown.
On them, men have affixed to each a name which is the insignia of it (episèmon) » D.-K. B 19
These verses are located at the end of the second part of the poem, dedicated to the false vision of men. In Herodotus, an épisèmon designates the insignia or the emblem, the coats of arms, for instance the insignias sculpted on a scepter (apple, rose, eagle, 1, 195, 8). Parmenides compares the names given by men to the emblems or the insignias that figure in relief on the shields. Now, such a sign encloses an intention, an implied comment (designated by the noun huponoia, in Euripides, The Phoenician women, verse 1130-1134).
In the Seven Against Thebes that we may consider as the play by Aeschylus dedicated to the signs that lay on shields, it is possible to note that from the moment a sign has become something not self-evident that may be encrypted and the meaning of which must be penetrated in order to be understood, we may become aware of the incorporeality of the sign (which will become one of the problematic questions of the Stoics’ thinking). We become aware that if a sign is not a real thing, its very pertinence resides within its relationship to the real. A shield bears an effigy that tries to generate fear. Now, to conjure away this fear, we only need to underline the imaginary dimension of the sign (the emblems, sèmata, do not cause any wound, 398); a sign on the shield would take its meaning if the sign were carried out (404 ; 518). Thus, one may refuse to put a sign on one’s shield and this implies that one seems to be in reality what a sign would merely represent (« what he wants is not to seem heroic but to Be heroic », 591). The sign may therefore be truthful or deceptive (Agamemnon, 497). Thus, by using the term episèmon, Parmenides sets himself within a perspective that we may qualify as being critical or skeptical.
One last occurrence must retain our attention, the one of fragment B8, verse 55:
« and on the other hand, they have divided up the aspect into contraries and they have instituted signs (sèmat’ ethento) that separate them from one another »
When Parmenides says that men have instituted signs that separate things from one another, it implies that men have defined signs in a conventional manner. This leads us to symbolical signs and their double dimension now true now false. That is why men are wrong (verse 54). Because they diffract and deform the Being, the nouns that are conventional signs and symbolic are also deceitful.
Nevertheless, in spite of the ambivalent and at least critical status that he seems to grant to signs, épisèmes episemic names or deceitful signals, it is by the term sèmata that Parmenides designates the language of the Being as is witnessed by the aforementioned fragment B 8. The road, the track or way of the Being is lined out with signs that must be interpreted in such a way that the signs of the Being are not simple denotations or designations, but truly symbols according to the acceptance of the term that we have defined. The science of the Being is a « hermeneutic ». Therefore, it does not seem to be a problem for Parmenides to use these signs that could however lead men into error.
Now, as many interpreters have noted, Parmenides not only writes and thinks in Homer’s language, but goes as far as to think the Being against a backdrop of identification to Ulysses. We can show that the images that are used to describe the Being are those that we can find in the Odyssey to describe Ulysses : for instance, the Being is held down in motionlessness in bonds as Ulysses is bonded to the mast in the episode of the Mermaids. This reading hypothesis that breaks our philosophers’ habits by setting philosophy and poetry face to face is fruitful because it enables us to attend as though directly to the birth of philosophy in the poem by Parmenides. It may also be that this hypothesis informs us on the manner that Parmenides understands the signs. Thus, the sèmata of the road of the Being could find their correspondent in the aforementioned verse in Book 12 of the Odyssey all the more because the Mermaids’ episode constitutes one of the elements of the road designated and signified by Circe. And the resemblance of the homeric formula with the one that we have encountered in Herodotus could lead us to suppose that Parmenides uses the sèmata of the road of the Being in the first meaning of the word sêma, that is to say the sign that designates, consigns, writes down.
However, things are not self-evident and we must be especially vigilant.
The fact is that the theme of the entire Odyssey is what one calls the recognition of Ulysses who returns from Troy to Ithaca after a 20-year long absence and who is unrecognizable. In it, the signs fill an obsessive and problematic place to the point that it was possible to speak since the Antiquity, of Homer’s skepticism.
Eurycleia, the wet-nurse who discovered Ulysses’ return in Ithaca, tries to convince his wife Penelope who remains incredulous :
« But go now ! another sign entirely distinct (sêma ariphradès) I will mention » (Book XXIII verse 73)
It refers to the wound (oulèn) that a wild boar inflicted to Ulysses during a hunt:
« this wound that in days gone by the white-tusked boar inflicted to him
I saw it as I was washing it (phrasamèn) » (74- 75).
Eurycleia’s experience is described by the verb phrazein that means in the medium form, to notice, to make out. Eurycleia notices the wound, she made out the wound. The term ariphrades which is used to characterize the sêma is itself derived from the verb phrazesthai. Let us note that it is possible to make out the sign or make out the wound.
In Book XIX of the Odyssey (verse 381-467). Ulysses introduced himself at the court disguised as an unrecognizable stranger. Penelope asks Eurycleia to wash his feet as is required by the custom of hospitality. Eurycleia agrees while at the same time she confides the anguish that overtakes her at the sight of the stranger whose resemblance with Ulysses she perceives (verse 382). Ulysses, who fears to be discovered, then sets himself off:
« because his heart suddenly feared that the old woman would ostensibly make out the scar (anaphrassaito) when taking his foot and that his doings would be therefore pointed out ostensibly (amphada) » (390- 391).
His experience is again described by a verb formed on the radical of the verb phrazesthai preceded by the prefix ana- which here does not indicate the resumption but indicates the fact of doing the thing in an ostensible manner. The following verse accurately describes what it is Ulysses fears:
« now, the moment she was at his feet to bathe him, she recognized (egnô) the wound » (392-393).
A few verses further, the verb is repeated:
« now, the old woman touching the wound with the flat of her hands recognized it (= identified it, gnô) » (verse 467- 468).
In verse 474-475, Eurycleia specifies:
« you are indeed Ulysses, dear child, and nevertheless I did not recognize you (egnôn) before having completely felt my master all around ».
What Eurycleia means to say is that she recognizes Ulysses, her master and « her dear child » once she has discovered and recognized the wound.
In Book 24 of the Odyssey, Ulysses’ father, Laertes, refuses to spontaneously recognize his son and wants to test him:
« if I indeed have in front of me Ulysses, my child, tell me now of a sign (sêma) very distinct (ariphrades) so that I may be persuaded (pepoîthô) » (vers 328-329).
Ulysses then proceeds to tell about the story of his wound beginning with these words:
« first, make out (phrasai) this wound with your eyes » (verse 331).
Then Ulysses’ story persuades Laertes:
« But Laertes at these words, felt his knees and heart fail him, having ostensibly recognized the signs (sèmat’ anagnontos) that Ulysses had made him seen (pephrad’) so that they be firm (empeda) » (verse 345-346).
The situation, similar to that of Eurycleia, is nevertheless different from it. We can find part of the same vocabulary: Laertes requests a sêma ariphrades, a « distinct sign ». In fact, Ulysses gives him two: he asks him to make out (phrasai) the wound but is not happy with that proof alone and lists for him the trees that his father had dedicated to him in the past, which is written in its turn by the verb pephrade, epic aorist of phrazein (to cause to make out).
The experience of recognition is described using the verbs recognize ostensibly (anagnônai) and cause to make out. Now, Laertes is not said to « make out (phrazesthai) the wound » but « ostensibly recognize (ana-gnônai) the signs », the pre-verb ana adding to the verb gnônai the sense of ostensibly recognizing, publicly indeed. Everything tends to admit that Laertes is simply persuaded by Ulysses’ story. Likewise, it is in a discourse aiming to persuade Penelope, that Eurycleia requests that she makes out the sign. Indeed, when Eurycleia herself experiences the recognition of Ulysses, it is not a sign that she declares she recognizes but Ulysses’ scar. It therefore seems that the signs are generated by a persuasive discourse of which they constitute a protocollary element. This is what clearly shows the following text: in Book XIX, Penelope asks Ulysses, who hides his real identity from her, by pretending he is a guest who would have welcomed Ulysses, which clothes the latter was wearing, in order to feel whether he is saying the truth (eteon) (verse 215-219). Ulysses answers by describing Ulysses’ clothes and in particular the golden fastener of his cloak, a unique work of art (221-248). Penelope is persuaded and her experience is described in the following manner:
« having recognized the signs (sèmat’ anagnousèi) that Ulysses had caused her to make out (pephrad’) so that they be firm (empeda) » (verse 250).
The same formula is found here as was used in Laertes’ case : ostensibly recognize the signs in relation to the verb make out, it means to identify because one is persuaded (even in a situation of blatant lie, as Penelope is persuaded that the fastener is Ulysses’ sign whereas the latter stands in front of her without her recognizing him).
In Book XXI, Ulysses has not unmasked himself yet in front of the pig-keeper Eumeus and the cattleman. After having tested their loyalty, he unmasks his identity.
And he utters the formula :
« I shall show another sign utterly distinct (sêma ariphrades )
So that you will recognize me well and believe me
(eu gnôton pistôthèton) » (217-218).
Ulysses then uncovers his scar. The effect on both his servants is described as follows:
« when they had looked (esidetèn) and they had made out well their master (eû ephrassanto) » (222).
The verbs used to describe the experience of the servants are eisidein and eu phrazesthai. The servants look at the scar and make out well (eu) the master, they identify the scar then the master but it is not said that they identify the sign, in other words, they do not set themselves in a protocol of persuasion.
In Book XXIII, Penelope declares that if it is indeed (eteon) Ulysses who has come back to Ithaca:
«We shall both recognize one another (gnôsometh’) with no difficulty» (verse 109).
Penelope explains why in the following verse:
« because for us there are signs (sêmath’) that we know (idmen) both well hidden from others » (verse 110).
These signs that are hidden from others, these signs that are encrypted for others, and that the spouses are the only ones to know consist in the conjugal bed that Ulysses built with his own hands while keeping the secret of his confection: it was built from the root of an olive tree so that nobody can move it. Penelope may thus test Ulysses using a ruse. In front of him, she asks Eurycles to move the bed (verse 181). If the man who stands in front of her is indeed Ulysses, he will not fail to react, which effectively occurs. Ulysses immediately reacts and tells how he built the bed, concluding his story with these words: « such is the sign (sêma) that I put for you into light » (verse 200). Penelope, persuaded, uses the required formula: Ulysses has given her distinct signs (sêmata ariphradea, vers 225).
In this passage, the verb eidenai has for object secret signs. Penelope and Ulysses will recognize one another thanks to the signs that only they know, but the experience is still that of a persuasion process.
In these occurrences, some differences may be established. Laertes and the Penelope of the first occurrence, the one of the golden fastener, signal that they recognize the signs (sêmat’ anagnousè or sêmat’ anagnontos) that Ulysses has caused them to make out. As we have seen, the verb anagnônai boils down to identifying ostensibly, publicly. Identifying the signs publicly means recognizing in the double meaning contained in our verb recognize: identifying and agreeing to say, recognizing in the sense of granting one’s credit. Laertes and the Penelope of the golden fastener episode recognize the signs that have been exhibited to persuade them, they make them out by admitting them to be convincing. The sign is therefore clearly linked to a process of persuasion. In an exchange of words in which it is a question of persuading someone, the scar, the golden fastener become signs that render an allegation credible.
On the other hand, however, Eurycles and the servants are not said to recognize the signs but their referent, Ulysses « child » or « master ». This referent is not the same one. Moreover, the Penelope of the second occurrence is not satisfied with only designating a referent and underlines the reciprocity of the recognition between Ulysses and herself: « we shall recognize one another » (nôi gnôsometh’allèlôn, 108-9). We have sufficiently evidenced the reservations of Penelope facing a man who reappears suddenly after twenty years, in a context filled with lies and betrayals, where not only men are lying but also the gods, as Penelope reminds it herself (23, 217-222). Penelope does not recognize any Ulysses, even less that magnified by Athena (23, 156) but the one who will know how to recognize her herself, the one who will accomplish an interactive recognition including reciprocity.
These observations lead us to the following conclusion : the referential opacity is the correlate of the sign of persuasion. The persuasive and public dimension of the sign is directly due to the opacity of its referent, because the recognition of the referent is singular. This conclusion may be confirmed by two other examples of recognition. The first concerns Helena in Book 4 of the Odyssey. Whereas Ulysses has taken the appearance of a slave who paces incognito the streets of Troy (oikêi eoikôs, 245), Helena declares: « egô de in oiè anegnôn toîon eonta (I alone recognized him such as he was » (250). Helena does not need any signs, in spite of Ulysses’ disguise. The second occurrence is also what constitutes for the commentators, one of the most moving passages of the Odyssey :
In Book 17 (verse 290-327). Ulysses disguised as a beggar goes accompanied by Eumeus the pig-keeper towards his palace in which a banquet is being prepared.
« While they were exchanging these words between them
A dog that was lying there, looked up and pointed its ears;
It was Argos, Ulysses’ dog and endowed with an endurance spirit,
The dog that he had fed himself in the past without having time to benefit from it
Because he had left for the holy Ilion.
In the past, young men would take it hunting deers, hares, and wild goats;
But today, in the absence of its master, the dog lay, deserted, spread on the dung of mules and oxen that was heaping up in front of the door,
While waiting for Ulysses’ servants to take it to manure his large domain
This is where lay the dog Argos gnawed at by worms
As soon as it saw (enoèsen) Ulysses near itself
It wagged its tail, and turned down both its ears ;
But it did not have be strength to go and meet its master
Ulysses saw it from afar (idôn) ; he moved to the side to wipe a tear
Without Eumeus’ knowledge, then he questioned him /… / (verse 305)
As for Argos, its destiny was black death which seized it all at once after having seen Ulysses again (idont’) after twenty years » (verse 327).
The two verbs used to describe the dog’s experience are noeîn and idein. Noeîn signifies putting oneself into the noos, in the spirit. Under pretext that this verb can not yet have the meaning that it will have in the Republic of Plato, we may be tempted to only attribute a sensorial signification to it, moreover better suited to an animal. It so happens that noeîn signifies to smell. Argos would simply smell Ulysses. However, the second verb, idein which signifies to see is used to characterize the dog’s vision as well as that of Ulysses, which enables to invalidate a reductive interpretation.
It is possible to show that, far from being simply a sensitive one, the dog’s experience is cognitive, in accordance with the full meaning of the verb noeîn, to have in the mind a thought, to understand. This is what enables us to assert a passage from Book XXI that we have quoted. Ulysses has not unmasked his identity yet in front of the pig-keeper Eumeus and the cattleman. To test their loyalty, he asks them which side they would take between Ulysses’ and the Suitors’. Both answer that they would take Ulysses’ side. The text expresses the impact of their response on Ulysses:
« when he had ostensibly recognized their true thinking (noon nèmerte’ anegnô) » (verse 205). Noos expresses something like the project, the intention of the pig-keeper and the cattleman towards Ulysses. There is therefore in the verb noeîn the content of a thought. Noeîn signifies to think but through the senses, whether smelling or sight.
The dog recognizes Ulysses without anyone’s notice but Ulysses’. It is therefore an intimate recognition which may be compared to the recognition of Penelope, also intimate, to the difference that this à la différence près intimity does not exclude the signs, even if secret signs. Because the dog did not need any signs at all, without for all that having at his disposal the divine powers of Helena (Odyssey 4, 122). There has been a contact without words, and perfectly requited in spite of it pathetic brevity.
The lesson that is derived then is that it is necessary to distinguish between the recognition via signaling and symbols and the recognition via contact to which only the dog has a perfect access.
The sèmata of the Odyssey are obviously derived from a hermeneutic tradition of signs. The scar is the sign of an opaque referent that the sign does not succeed in absolutizing. It is, it seems, this tradition of the sign-reference, of the « hermeneutic » sign, that is a problematic of the Odyssey, long before Sextus Empiricus who will show that the dog Argos was capable of recognizing Ulysses immediately, on his return from an exile that lasted twenty years, whereas the human being even the most familiar to Ulysses required an unending number of proofs and reasonings.
If Parmenides thinks in the language of the Odyssey, he certainly is not ignorant of the deep reflection that is there developed concerning the signs. When the goddess who is the speaker l’énonciatrice of Parmenides, talks in the direct discourse, she uses mainly the verb phrazô (B2, 6), just like Ulysses : she « causes her addressee to make out » within a perspective of persuasion (B2, 4) where what is not recognizable cannot be made out (oute gar an gnoiès /…/oute phrasais, B2, 7-8). The goddess of Parmenides, who shows herself, like Ulysses, capable of articulating a kosmon apatèlon (B8, 52) and of asserting a diakosmon eoikota panta (B8, 60) never says like Circe in the Odyssey sêmaneô nor deixô. In spite of the use of the metaphor of the path as, for instance, in Herodotus, she does not guide Parmenides by naming for him one by one the elements of the road of the Being and the sèmata that she articulates sound like proofs.
By choosing to call sèmata the properties of the Being, whereas he conveys to this term a rather negative connotation, Parmenides would set himself then in a linguistic and rhetorical perspective of the signs, defined by an enunciative pragmatic. He would suggest thus an impassable difference between the discourse on the Being and the Being itself to which only thinking may access.
Now, is it not this difference of a pragmatic type which is entirely lost as soon as we believe we can state the affections (pathè) of the Being? Because in order to admit that there may be a discourse of the affections of the Being, it is not enough to believe like Socrates in the Cratylus, that it is possible to start from the things themselves in order to judge of the pertinence of the signs that are words. It is especially important to have definitely removed forclos the enunciative and relative perspective that is characteristic of signs, by substituting for it the creed (or the illusion) in an absolute statement, the one that Socrates calls according to his wishes in Book III of the Republic, and that he names « simple diegesis ».
