You can argue over whether cheesecake originated in Ancient Greece or the Middle East, but it was really adopted as a ‘Jewish’ cake by the Jews of central and eastern Europe, who had access to a plentiful supply of cheese and cream, especially in early summer.
Shavuot is one of the three pilgrimage festivals, when, in ancient times, the devout would go on pilgrimage to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Although the festival is primarily linked to the giving of the Torah to the Jewish people, it also has agricultural origins in the onset of the wheat harvest. At Shavuot, the Book of Ruth, so evocative of pastoral life, is read in the synagogue, and dairy dishes are eaten at home. Cheesecake is, of course, no longer confined to Shavuot, but you have to agree that a religion which actually encourages you to eat cheesecake can’t be all bad.

Non è certo se le origini del cheesecake risalgano all'Antica Grecia o al Medio Oriente, ma sta di fatto che fu adottato come dolce "ebraico" dagli Ebrei dell'Europa centrorientale i quali, soprattutto agli inizi dell'estate, avevano a disposizione un'abbondante provvista di formaggio e panna.
Anticamente i fedeli si recavano in peregrinazione al Tempio di Gerusalemme in occasione di Shavuot, una delle tre feste di pellegrinaggio. Festività principalmente legata al dono della Torah al popolo ebraico, Shavuot ha anche una tradizione agricola e coincide con l'inizio del raccolto del grano. Durante Shavuot nella sinagoga si legge il Libro di Ruth, che evoca la vita pastorale, e in famiglia si consumano piatti a base di latticini. Oggi il dolce non è più limitato alla celebrazione di Shavuot. Tuttavia, dovete riconoscere che una religione che esorta a mangiare cheesecake non può essere poi così male.

I graduated with a first class degree in Applied Translation. I started translating professionally in 2004/5 and since then I have gained extensive experience in translation for subtitling and audiovisuals, travel & tourism, marketing & advertisement and pharmaceutical/medical texts. Moreover, I translated documents for Italian NGOs, on a volunteer basis, covering topics of international development and food security.
Beside my BA in Translation I am currently writing a dissertation about chocolate consumption in the UK, as part of MA studies in Anthropology of Food. Thanks to this course I acquired specialized knowledge of social anthropology theories, as well as various areas related to food such as industrialized agriculture, fishery, national & international policies, environmental issues, gastronomy & cooking, food security and famine relief, alternative production, ethical consumption, food safety and the food industry.
