Bio

Hi, I'm Sofia: a translator passionate about the audiovisual world and subtitling 🎬 😄

As someone who has always loved reading, languages and making up her own worlds using the power of words, I started my early 20's by following the visual side of that passion for stories and narrative, and becoming a photographer while studying audiovisual communication and cinema. Since human psychology and sociology are two domains that have always fascinated me as well, in the sense that I like learning about how our mind works and interacts with other minds, how they are influenced and so on, marketing was another one of the fields that I pursued, becoming a community manager.

For some years, these were the things that made me feel closer to who I thought I was, but, unknowingly, I always kept looking for something more. As the pandemic hit and I was no longer able to work in those fields, I started attending many webinars and online events on translation. And something clicked: I realized that I could combine my biggest passions, audiovisual narratives, the written word and languages! I enrolled in a postgraduate degree in audiovisual translation and the rest is (a happy, challenging and always fulfilling) history 🌟

Besides being passionate about subtitling, my background as a cinema student and the theoretical and practical knowledge I've acquired regarding how audiovisual projects are made, step-by-step, allows me to have a deeper understanding of:

• The audiovisual field;

• The importance of having high quality subtitles;

• How subtitles can add value to the audiovisual experience.

I also like to combine my professionalism with a more personal approach, to know more about the people I work with (you, perhaps? 😄) and to see everyone first as the human being that they are, so be ready to be asked how your day is going and to see a (debatably moderate) amount of emojis as we exchange emails!

If I’m not subtitling or translating, you’ll probably find me cozied up with my projector or at the cinema, watching movies of all kinds — the last one that caught my heart was City of Wind, by Lkhagvadulam Purev-Ochir — picking tomatoes at my local urban vegetable garden, deepening my yoga practice, reading about somatic therapies, finances and complicated love triangles in Paris or trying out the latest MMORPG; all of this helps me gather knowledge (and lots of vocabulary) that we can use in your project to make it stand out even more 🎥

If you have an interesting challenge to share with me, say hello 👋 at [email protected]

Let's discuss it and turn it into an unforgettable audiovisual experience!
