Source text - English They stand by the sea at Lindisfarne. You’ll find them in the glens of Skye, in Slovenian gorges, on the peaks of Chamonix, Barbadian beaches, American national parks and Australian creeks. Stacks of stones, miniature monuments made by enraptured visitors and photographed for posterity are tiny tributes to human industry, our desire to make a mark, and our deep love of special places. But what appears a completely benign form of play in the natural world has become a plague.
On a trip to visit his father in Orkney, John Hourston, the founder of marine campaigners the Blue Planet Society, was dismayed to find wild beaches dotted with stacks of stones. His tweets have triggered an unexpectedly heated debate during which he’s been belittled as a killjoy, a pedant, and even a misanthropist. Who knew meditative stone-stackers could be so angry? People have posted ghastly images of intrusive memorials from the pyramids to Stonehenge. Raging against the rocks is trivial and futile, say many. If stone stacks infuriate you, knock them down. Plenty of people do. Besides, what next? Ban sandcastles? Let’s focus on plastic in the oceans, people!
Of course, stone-stacking is an ancient and sometimes religious impulse. A cairn in Scotland is a memorial to someone lost, but also a pile of stones that marks a way through wild country: invaluable when the cloud comes down. Cairns keep us safe.
More recently, stone-stacking has become an art form and a competitive sport. Artists say the absorbing process of handling and balancing cool stones is meditative and good for our mental health. Children love it.
But what Hourston’s critics don’t seem to grasp is the almost industrial scale of this new age of stone-stacking. Adventure tourism and social media have created a perfect storm of stones.

Certo, l’impilamento di sassi è una tradizione antica, a volte religiosa. Un cairn in Scozia è un monumento commemorativo a una persona defunta, ma anche una pila di sassi che indica il percorso attraverso una terra desolata, particolarmente utile quando cala la nebbia. Grazie ai cairn non ci si perde.
Di recente l’impilamento di sassi è diventato una forma d’arte e uno sport agonistico. Gli artisti affermano che il processo totalizzante di bilanciamento delle pietre favorisce la concentrazione e fa bene alla mente. I bambini lo adorano.
Ma quello che gli oppositori di Hourston non sembrano cogliere è la diffusione massiva di questa pratica. Il turismo d’avventura e i media hanno lanciato una vera e propria moda.

An independent film (or indie film) is a film initially produced without financing or distribution from a major film studio.
Creative, business and technological reasons have all contributed to the growth of the indie film scene in the late 20th and early 21st century.
On the business side, the costs of big-budget studio films also lead to conservative choices in cast and crew.
There is a trend in Hollywood towards co-financing (over two-thirds of the films put out by Warner Bros. in 2000 were joint ventures, up from 10% in 1987).
A hopeful director is almost never given the opportunity to get a job on a big-budget studio film unless he or she has significant industry experience in film or television.
Also, the studios rarely produce films with unknown actors, particularly in lead roles.
Before the advent of digital alternatives, the cost of professional film equipment and stock was also a hurdle to being able to produce, direct, or star in a traditional studio film.
But the advent of consumer camcorders in 1985, and more importantly, the arrival of high-resolution digital video in the early 1990s, have lowered the technology barrier to film production significantly.
Both production and post-production costs have been significantly lowered; in the 2000s, the hardware and software for post-production can be installed in a commodity-based personal computer.
Technologies such as DVDs, FireWire connections and a wide variety of professional and consumer-grade video editing software make film-making relatively affordable.

Sul fronte economico i costi dei film con un alto budget prodotti dagli studios portano anche a scelte moderate in termini di cast e troupe.
A Hollywood sta prendendo piede il cofinanziamento (nel 1987 solo il 10% dei film distribuiti dalla Warner Bros. erano joint ventures, mentre nel 2000 si è passati a oltre il 65%).
A un regista esordiente non viene quasi mai data la possibilità di lavorare a un film da milioni di dollari a meno che non abbia già una certa esperienza nell'industria cinematografica o televisiva.
Inoltre, le majors producono raramente film con attori sconosciuti, specialmente se nel ruolo di protagonisti.
Prima dell'avvento di alternative digitali anche il costo dell’attrezzatura professionale e delle pellicole rendeva difficile produrre, girare o recitare in un normale film degli studios.
Ma l'arrivo delle videocamere semi-professionali nel 1985 e, soprattutto, dei video digitali ad alta risoluzione all'inizio degli anni Novanta ha drasticamente ridotto le barriere tecnologiche alla produzione di un film.
Sia i costi di produzione che di post-produzione si sono sensibilmente abbassati: a partire dagli anni 2000 hardware e software per la post-produzione possono essere installati anche su un normale personal computer.
Tecnologie come DVD, connessioni Firewire e una vasta gamma di programmi professionali e semi-professionali per il video editing rendono la produzione di film relativamente economica.

Whereas from an academic point of view I got a Bachelor’s Degree in translation and interpreting at the University of Trieste and I am currently attending a Master’s Degree in audiovisual translation, organised by the Instituto Superior de Estudios Lingüísticos y Traducción (ISTRAD) of Seville.
