English to Estonian: Kindness by Naomi Shihab Nye / Lahkus General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English Kindness
Before you know what kindness really is
you must lose things,
feel the future dissolve in a moment
like salt in a weakened broth.
What you held in your hand,
what you counted and carefully saved,
all this must go so you know
how desolate the landscape can be
between the regions of kindness.
How you ride and ride
thinking the bus will never stop,
the passengers eating maize and chicken
will stare out the window forever.
Before you learn the tender gravity of kindness,
you must travel where the Indian in a white poncho
lies dead by the side of the road.
You must see how this could be you,
how he too was someone
who journeyed through the night with plans
and the simple breath that kept him alive.
Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside,
you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing.
You must wake up with sorrow.
You must speak to it till your voice
catches the thread of all sorrows
and you see the size of the cloth.
Then it is only kindness that makes sense anymore,
only kindness that ties your shoes
and sends you out into the day to mail letters and
purchase bread,
only kindness that raises its head
from the crowd of the world to say
it is I you have been looking for,
and then goes with you every where
like a shadow or a friend.
Translation - Estonian Lahkus
Enne kui tead, mis lahkus õieti on,
pead midagi kaotama,
Estonian to English: "Rändaja õhtulaul" by Ernst Enno / Rover's Evening Song General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - Estonian Ma kõnnin hallil lõpmata teel
Kesk nurmi, täis valmivat vilja,
Ma kõnnin ja kõnnin otsata teel,
Ju lapsena teesid armastas meel,--
Teed laulavad õhtu nii hilja.
Need teed, kuis on nad kõvad, kui keed,
Need otsata kutsuvad jooned,--
Ma kõnnin ja kõnnin, teed kõvad kui keed,
Nii hallid ja tolmused kõik need teed,
Need rändaja eluhooned.
Ju lapsena teesid armastas meel,
ju lapsena kuulda tee juttu--
Ju lapsena kõndida armastas meel,
Oma laulu nii laulda hallil teel,
kui polekski ilmas ruttu.
Tund hiline nüüd laulab lõpmata--
Meel igatseb tolmuta randa,
tund hiline, tee kõva kui kee,
Mind hoiab mõrsjaks enesele --
Ei siiski saa pärale kanda.
Ma kõnnin hallil lõpmata teel
Kesk nurmi, täis valmivat vilja,
Ma kõnnin ja kõnnin otsata teel
Kui teede laul, tee helisev meel,
Ja kõik on õhtu nii hilja.
Translation - English Treading on an endless gray road
between the fields full of ripening grain,
treading and treading on an endless road,
early on I was drawn to roads –
roads sing late at night.
How tough these roads, they are as chains,
these endless inviting lines –
treading and treading, these roads tough as chains,
so gray and dusty, all these roads,
a rover’s living quarters.
Early on my mind was drawn to roads,
early on to listen to the roads speaking,
early on my mind was drawn to tread,
to sing my own song on a gray road,
as if there’s no hurry in the world.
The late hour is singing endlessly –
my mind desiring to reach a shore without dust,
the late hour, the road tough as a chain,
keeps me as a bride for itself –
but it can’t take me there.
Treading on an endless gray road
between the fields of ripening grain,
treading and treading on an endless road;
the song of roads, the ring of roads
and all is so late at night.

Years of experience: 28. Registered at ProZ.com: Jul 2001. Became a member: Nov 2003.
With over 30 years of experience in language instruction and translation, I’ve honed my skills across various roles: translating, editing, proofreading, transcreation, quality assurance, interpreting, and language instruction. If you’re curious, you can find more details about my journey in my CV (check out the tab above!).
But let’s talk about the present. Despite my long tenure, I’m no fossil—I’ve kept pace with the ever-evolving landscape of language and communication. Few years ago, I completed a master’s program in translation studies at the prestigious University of Tartu in Estonia. 🎓
Now, let’s debunk a myth: Translation isn’t just about swapping words like puzzle pieces. It’s an art that requires three essential ingredients: empathy, expertise, and experience. When I tackle a text, I immerse myself in the author’s intentions and ideas. I consider the cultural nuances, the unspoken context, and the subtle shades of meaning. It’s not just about language; it’s about capturing the soul of the message.
And yes, sometimes I play detective. When faced with gaps in knowledge, I don my humble hat and dive into research. Because every translation is a bridge—one that connects people, cultures, and ideas.
So, whether you need a crisp Estonian translation, a nuanced interpretation, or a finely tuned edit, count me in! Let’s collaborate and create linguistic magic. 🌟
