Not really Jun 14, 2016

The only issues I've had is that I'm running it on a 2011 Macbook Pro, and my brightness and volume keys stopped working when I was running Windows. I've got the volume working now, so it's pretty much fine...until my ancient Macbook decides to kick the bucket...

Didn't want W10 but it works OK Jun 14, 2016

I was livid when my computer did the update against my express wishes, and I hope Microsoft get sued within an inch of their lives for it! But I won't go back now. It's no better than W7 but no worse either, and it won't suddenly be unsupported

I'm amazed to hear people using XP still. I loved it too, it's true. But I used to share a computer with someone who refused all updates. Our stuff got so outdated that when we were forced to change (when the computer died) we lost loads of s

Our stuff got so outdated that when we were forced to change (when the computer died) we lost loads of stuff. We could have migrated one or even two generations but there was too big a gap. I've learnt that it's better to take the occasional small hit than sit back and wait for the massive knockout punch.

Got forced into it Jun 14, 2016

I had Windows 8 and got forced into upgrading to Windows 10 much as some of you: I never gave my consent to do it and wasted a couple of hours during a very busy day. I was mad as heck, but figured I couldn't do much about it, so I bit the bullet and carried on. I guess users just have to continue submissively letting large corporations manage their lives.

I'm not crazy about it, but so far, I've had no major issues. However, I am on the lookout and ready to call my support person to revert to W8 if things ever get out of hand.

Windows 7 in a VM within a Linux environment Jun 14, 2016

This is the only way I feel comfortable working with Windows at all, period.

went back to W7 Jun 14, 2016

I kept making new dates for the transition but it went ahead and upgraded itself on Sat last when I left the computer for a while to watch TV...I returned to complete some work and discovered it was in the process of upgrading! So, I had to wait another hour and then I just clicked "Decline" I was so annoyed (mainly because I detest being bullied into something I haven't asked for but also because I'm not a techie so when I read other people say it was a bad idea I decided I didn't want it.

I'll have to buy a new laptop soon as the old one is giving problems so no doubt that will come with W10 installed. Hopefully there will be no problems with it...

As I said, I let it go ahead, mainly because it would probably have been just as much bother to take it all out again. But I was livid (still am!). Fortunately, I didn't let the fact that I'd already lost the best part of half a day on the damn thing rush me into pushing the wrong buttons. I discovered that it was about to set all sorts of things, just to "help me". Had I not noticed, it would have sent every bit of information about me everywhere, probably down to what loo paper I used. I suppose I could have unticked them later but most of the damage would have been done. I also got rid of various annoying things such as their stupid instant help.

Why I like Windows 10 Jun 14, 2016

For all of its shortcomings, there is one thing I love about Windows 10: it's great at driving people to finally make the switch to Linux!

I've managed to spare a few people the forced "upgrade" so far by deleting the relevant Windows updates, but I keep hearing that Microsoft sneak it into other updates or just plain revert your settings to force their way onto your computer. With their malware tactics such as using

I've managed to spare a few people the forced "upgrade" so far by deleting the relevant Windows updates, but I keep hearing that Microsoft sneak it into other updates or just plain revert your settings to force their way onto your computer. With their malware tactics such as using the "close" button as consent, I don't expect I'll be able to keep it away for them much longer. I might be asked to install Linux on their computers at that point, and will gladly oblige

I decided against that a few years ago and I'm never turning back. As a result I have to turn down some work from companies who insist on proprietary/Windows-only software, but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make. There are some things I can't put a price on, and privacy and choice are among those.

Pushy Windows Jun 14, 2016

I couldn't use the computer for a couple of hours in the middle of a busy day while it did its thing, and when it had finished I couldn't find all the things I needed and one or two files simply refused to open. It's very strange, and I'm sure I didn't press 'yes' by mistake. Having looked on various internet forums I was reassured to discover it's not just me - the same thing happened to other people. Not being very good with technology I like to plan things like that beforehand to make sure I have all the information I need and have backed up files etc. before I start playing around with them. I'm starting to get the hang of it now, but I would have much preferred to keep things the way they were.

Last year, Windows started to download an automatic update for Windows 7 to prepare the machine for Windows 10, without asking the user for permission to do so.

After publicized protests in the media, some entrepreneurial spirits identified the Windows update number so that you can uninstall it and avoid the involuntary upgrade to Windows 10. I have done that with all my machines. What a bitter taste to be pushed something I don't want!

Maybe I'll use Windows 10…in five years! But not today. Before upgrading an operating system, here's what I do:

1) Don't be an early adopter of anything.
2) Remember that you don't just depend on Word and Trados to do your job as a translator. Some of us use dozens of other programs that we've spent hours finetuning to work with our current OS.

Whether you're technically inclined or not, that's not excuse to avoid learning the basics of computing maintenance.

Not over-impressed but I'm reasonably used to it Jun 14, 2016

I chose to upgrade from Windows 8 as soon as 10 was available because 8 was really the pits.

XP Jun 14, 2016

I still use XP on a virtual machine, in order to run popular translation software that won't run on my preferred Linux-based operating system. I found XP a bit heavy when it came out, but it is incredibly stable compared to later "improvements". I don't need support, as I only ever let it do what I know it can do well.

So I went back to the IT centre and downgraded back to 8.1. Which works fine. Never again. This caused me huge amounts of problems - on three separate occasions (upgrade to W10, reinstallation of W10 and downgrade to 8.1) I had to reinstall my printer drivers, and on the last 2 occasions I had to reinstall Office, Skype, Acrobat, Translation Memory software, etc. etc. So my advice - don't do it.Collapse

Back in 2007, when I was still running Windows XP, Windows Vista came on all new laptops and computers. Since I had to buy a new laptop, I paid $250 to an IT firm to install Windows XP on the Vista laptop. The reprieve lasted for almost 2 years, then I upgraded to Windows 7 after almost a year this new OS was in the market (again, I'm not an early adopter).

So, Ilan, I can relate.

Another piece of advice: when you buy a new laptop with whatever operating system you prefer, remember that new laptops and desktop computers no longer come with recovery discs or OS installation discs. You have two choices:

1) Perform a media backup the moment you turn on your new computer, following the manufacturer's instructions.
2) Buy your own operating system discs to reinstall in case you need it. There are several legitimate online businesses and websites selling older Windows discs (Win XP, Windows 7, etc.). Trust me, you'll save yourself several headaches in the future.
