Spanish term

asignar

Spanish to English Science Science (general) animals, experiments
Se utiliza una muestra de 600 animales, distribuidos en diez lotes, que se asignan a dos tratamientos: con y sin sustrato orgánico

alloted to two treatments? Sounds clumsy. "Assigned into two different treatment groups?" perhaps.
Any ideas?
cheers

treated with ot without

Given the way the sentence is structured I would just say 'treated with or without organic substrate'. The important thing is not to confuse anyone here and with too many things being assigned, grouped etc it gets muddy. Also, they don't say anything about the distribution of the treatments, ie how many were treated with what.

Sorry, typo! - treated with OR without

Note that it is important not to suggest in any way that all animals receive the same treatment (unless this is specifically the case here, which I doubt).

that will receive two different treatments

This means the same and does not sound clumsy.

Thank you, Ana"
neutral n/a (X) : Yes, the Spanish is also ambiguous, which is worth drawing attention to. The 'different' used here, however, refers to the treatment and not the animals, and so does not solve the ambiguity. HTH, Iain

The Spanish does too! I think by adding the word different you do, however, make it clear that some of the animals will receive treatment with and some without. The problem is that we do not know if it is a 50-50 split.
agree Ernesto de Lara : it works fine to make the sentence clear
