A decision was made by the Chief Surveyor General to create a Cadastral Information System (CIS) indicating the legal urban (erf-, smallholding-) and rural (farm-) land parcel boundaries. The ultimate system should also include the servitude boundaries, mineral rights-, local authority-, Magisterial District- and other relevant boundaries as well as the alphanumeric data of the parent parcels and the history of current land parcels. The first project (i.e. HOPE) was to specify and design the whole system with the capture of the rural spatial data. The majority of the data was obtained by digitising the noting plans (or compilation sheets). It was also found desirable to preserve the existing, original cadastral documents and the majority of the urban documents have been scanned. This is called the document imaging system (DIS). After the scanning and the capture of the rural cadastral data, project MIRACLE was launched where all the urban cadastre was captured. Digital urban cadastre captured by Local Authorities, town planners and land surveyors were also incorporated in the data set for project MIRACLE to eliminate duplication. The final project will be to capture the Alphanumeric data. The SG-Office is in the process of determining what will be contained in this Alphanumeric Database.
