Russian to English Social Sciences History
This is a work of cultural studies set in the early Christian/Byzantine period. I'm looking for an English equivalent of this term серы, which apparently was an ancient word for the Chinese.

Zaranee blagodarna.

There are different ideas about who the Seres actually were. The majority opinion seems to be 'Chinese', though in an old (19th cent.) Greek-Eng dictionary, I find Ser, pl. Seres: an Indian people from whom the ancients got the first silk.
