Portuguese term

Porto de Honra

Portuguese to English Other Tourism & Travel
An item in the timetable of a conference. I know it's a complimentary drinks party, but is it essentially (or only) Port (vinho do Porto) that is served? Or does "Drinks" adequately describe the event?

Discussion

lexical (asker) Mar 16, 2010:
Comments Just a couple of comments before I grade the question. It does seem that it must be port wine, not just any drink. Depending on when and how it takes place, Verginia's "port wine welcome drink" and Gilla's "toast" would be suitable. In my context, it happens on TWO occasions, part way through the conference, so I've decided on "port wine reception". Thanks to everyone for your contributions.

how about : Port Wine Welcome Drink suggestion
oxygen4u Mar 15, 2010:
No Porto de Honra é apenas servido vinho do porto. Também podem existir algumas bebidas não alcoólicas, tipo sumo de laranja. O objectivo é brindar com algo verdadeiramente português e não com champanhe... :)

toast

I suspect the safest translation would be just "toast" or even "official toast" or perhaps "free glass of port" if you want to keep the port.
There is an interesting discussion of the history of this expression in
http://aeiou.expresso.pt/porto-dhonra=f552181

part of which says:
Note from asker:
The article from Expresso was very interesting. It does look like it is usually Port, though - not drinks in general.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I'm awarding you the points, Gilla, because your reference was extremely helpful in clearing up the nature of the event."

Vin d´Honneur

In Guernsey, we call a vin d´honneur a drinks party that is held usually in a rather smart/historic venue and for entertaining "dignitaries" or a special group of people . I think it is used elsewhere too.
Note from asker:
I liked this option Sue, but I felt it might not be widely understood.

agree kashew : For Port Wine Cocktail - not Porto. As in your own explanation - takes place in Lisbon!

Thanks, but "Porto" refers to the Portuguese city called Porto where this delicious wine comes from, I would not translate it./The event takes place in Lisbon, but "Vinho do Porto" is a famous Portuguese wine from cidade do Porto.
