Coincido en que hay un cierto matiz negativo en "curious artist", posiblemente dando a entender que el hombre que intenta imitar las obras de Dios cae en el pecado de "hybris" u orgullo. Yo expresaría este matiz usando "artífice", "artesano" o "inventor" en lugar de "artista" y poniendo énfasis en el concepto de "curiosidad".
