No nos permitamos estar con la mirada en blanco, bostezar o dormir / dormitar frente al libro...
me permito cambiar el gerundio para parafrasear un poco y no utilizar la palabra "boquiabierto" que (por lo menos en Argentina) significa sorpresa en general positiva... y creo q no es la idea aquí.

Yo lo traduciría así:
“No nos dejemos estar, bostezando y adormeciéndonos sobre el libro mientras leemos”.
Creo que dentro del contexto, ésa es la idea.
"Gape" no es bostezar sino "mirar sin ver", no poner atención en lo que se intenta leer.
