The value of mineral left behind in pillaars could be quite significant if not properly accounted for. Combined with the necessity to use lots of ground support such as rock bolts and mesh, means that if lifts could be higher, then the overall cost of support would be less. In the wider orebodies perhaps transverse long hole stoping could be used, however, this would require a cemented backfill to be available.
