Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): GILLES MEUNIER

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

English term (edited): of its own > itself

lui-même

This sounds likely highly dubious EN, even for patent-ese!

I strongly suspect your expression is really meant to be 'itself' — could it possibly have been translated first from some other language into this 'sort-of' English?

Do note that 'of its own' could easily be a too-literal, word-for-word rendering of some source language term meaning 'itself' (its + self)
Peer comment(s):

agree Alison MacG : I agree with this interpretation. The original patent application was filed in Japan. I’ve added a reference showing similar usage in another originally Japanese patent application.

In support of Tony's comments

The usage found in the following patent application also originally filed in Japanese would appear to support Tony's interpretation.

Para [0070]
Specifically, there is provided a function of first obtaining and grasping various pieces of device information in the device (the electronic device 2A or the electronic device 2B) of its own whenever necessary. Specifically, information (activation status information) indicating an activation status of the device (the load 22) of its own (itself) is obtained from the load 22.

Para [0101]
when the device itself (the electronic device 2A or the electronic device 2B) is activated.
