Hi everyone,
I was hoping a linguistics expert out there could help me with this proper name from Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia Canada):
7laanaasaa
If it weren't for the "7" I might have a clue, but as it is I'm up a tree. Any ideas as to pronunciation? Well, thanks very much & have a good one

The two main dialects are Northen Haida or Masset and Southern Haida or Skidegate.
Masset and Skidegate are two villages in Haida Gwaii where the language is spoken. The third place where it is spoken is in Hydaburg on Price of Wales island in Alaska.
While nearly everyone agrees that there is only a single Haida language, there are some noticeable dialectal differences between communities. In modern times, the greatest difference is between Southern Haida, as spoken in Skidegate, and Northern Haida, spoken in Masset and Hydaburg. Speakers of one dialect will often have some trouble understanding the other dialect at first, until they have had time to adjust to it.
These are nearly extinct languages. According to the 1990 U.S. Census, there are 110 Haida speakers in the United States, the Canadian Census counts 275 speakers. Although Michael Krauss (1997) gives the numbers of speakers as 15 and 30 respectively here.
John Enrico devised one of the several systems for writing Haida. This system uses letters found in the Roman alphabet, plus the period and the number 7.

So looking at the table, your place name "7laanaasaau" is pronounced in sounds similar to English as:
(glottal stop) L - long A - N - long A - S - long A - short U
Double vowels according to the Enrico orthography are pronounced long and are written as, say, aa or áa.
'láanaa (a word in the Kasaan dialect of Alaskan Haida) means village and you can hear a pronunciation here.
The "saau" at the end of "7laanaasaau" may be a locative suffix so the word may mean "in the village".

my former dutch address was: Nassaulaan 7
means: Nassau Avenue No 7
"Nassau" is one of the names of the dutch royal family (Oranje-Nassau)
maybe there are dutch origins of that word?

You said it ! I wonder what you are trying to guess... What would the link be between the Dutch royal family, a street called Nassau (which, by the way, I thought was the name of some city in Africa, but then, my geography has never been up to par and I promised my last prof never to take it up again, so there...) and the Haïda people (such beautiful artefacts and house poles and jewelry and and... to be seen at Vancouver's anthropological museum). I heard a theory that the Inuït actually were the ones to people Europe, way back then... Long before any Viking came back to their continent and, of course, long before the 1492 massacre of the Caraïbs by you know who...But are there some remains of wooden architecture akin (I don't know if you can use the word akin for wood, except in poetry ?) to that of these people ? Is the raven the mother of life in Holland ? Is the shell the cradle of humanity (such beautiful symbol of life, not just Venus, being borne and born from the sea) in Dutch mythology ?
