Translations are an imperfect product by definition Nov 1, 2006

I agree with all of the comments above. Many agencies run by non-linguists inc. inheritors of the business do not add value by editing etc.

As the proof-reader picked up on the 2 mistakes and 1 query of meaning, then the end-users have not suffered any loss.

A 25% deduction seems OTT, but read that small print again. If not sanctioned, then - unless a mega-valuable job worth costly litigation - settle by offering a 10% compromise discount and don't work for that agency

Indeed, if the proofreader's interpretation of the queried part prevails and proves wrong, you are quite entitled to disclaim liability. Best keep prof. indemnity ins. just in case.

A perfect translation is, by definition, a subjective matter and 'lies in the eye of the beholder' as above.

Subjective proofreaders Nov 1, 2006

Conclusion. Your agency is being grossly unfair and exploitative. If their aim was to make you hate them, then they have succeeded wonderfully. I am sure your loyalty to them is about 50 degrees below zero, and quite rightly. If you are starving, steal their customers, they don't deserve them. If you are not, then don't do any more business with them.

Hi Jim,
You made a good point here by suggesting that in the end of the day, proofreaders are subjective (when they should be objective).

As for this agency, I have already informed them to scrap my details off their books and explained to them that they would have been better off negotiating the rate with me beforehand rather than behaving in such an appalling manner.
