Hi,
I work with a number of translation agencies, with which I've signed confidentiality clauses. When applying for or being offered new projects, I've been asked to provide details of previous experience.
Do you think mentioning the customers I've carried out project for via LSP's, without giving specific details of the material, would be breaching the confidentiality clauses of the LSPs? The wording on the agreements isn't clear, it says any information or date re... See more Hi,

Do you think mentioning the customers I've carried out project for via LSP's, without giving specific details of the material, would be breaching the confidentiality clauses of the LSPs? The wording on the agreements isn't clear, it says any information or date related to clients is confidential, but would this be breached by merely stating that I have carried out translations for the client without giving specifics? Has anyone else had this dilemma, and how did you resolve it?

The end client is not your client. Your customer's prestige in not transferable, and in some cases, naming a large agency customer might be to your disadvantage (indicating that you're willing to work for slave rates). To be honest, potential customers generally don't care about your agency clients as long as they think they can rely upon you to do good work, delivered on time.

However, you should have no compunction regarding providing a general description of various projects you've carried out. When I was active, over the years my résumé mentioned projects such as "large-scale power generation systems", "safety systems for high-end automakers", "machinery operating instructions designed for international distribution".
I've disclosed the name of an agency customer once in my career. In this case, the owner of a local agency asked if I had ever worked for another very small local agency, run by a man known to very difficult and demanding. That I had worked for him repeatedly was to my advantage. ▲ Collapse

Definitely.
(At least in the NDAs I've signed, and even if it's not in there it would be very bad manners to do so without asking the LSP first...)
