This unfortunately didn't happen to me. They continued offering me translation or proofreading jobs at a "flat rate". Much lower than the agreed rate.

It's fine Bruno, Jasmina and Sorana offered to whitewash their reputation, not polish it. And, albeit presumably unintentionally, whitewash it they did. I really don't think I'd work for them even if I was getting decent pay. I really disagree with the practice of taking advantage of new translators and the resulting distortion of the industry's reputation.

That said, I still use a Mac (produced by a company that has to install anti-suicide netting around its factories) so apparently my sense of morality doesn't run particularly deep.

I used to work with them (admittedly many years ago) and they had a terrible reputation for slow payment. We all have cashflow problems now and then, but this was a deliberate and cynical attempt to avoid paying their debts, and involved repeatedly ignoring emails and phone messages for months on end, and promising payments that never arrived.

More recently, they contacted me again and I thought I'd give them a second chance. It was a simple job of a few hundred words, but I was liaising with half a dozen people in two countries who clearly weren't communicating with one another, as they kept asking the same questions.

This company is proof that, generally speaking, the smaller the customer the easier and more pleasant they are to deal with. My favourite is a one-person business who gives me lots of work, zero red tape, and almost instant payments. They do still exist.
