Hi everyone,
Recently, I was listening to a podcast that raised an interesting point. It stated that in general successful products relieve a major pain or difficulty that a certain group has. The problem is that most companies never take the time to ask what people want.
This made me wonder what tool or product we as translators would most benefit from. What do you guys think?

- Better glossaries/reference material (ones that can be downloaded and are compatible with CATs)
- More guidance on running a translation business (marketing, accounting and management books/courses)
- Training material for improving translation style and skills
- Formatting tools specific to a translator's work

- Better glossaries/reference material (ones that can be downloaded and are compatible with CATs) I think the real sticking point in this case is probably to do with copyright. How can you have quality information in a useful, flexible format that doesn't immediately get illegally copied all over the world?
I would love to see a terminology management program which was platform independent. For Trados I have to use MultiTerm; that's no choice at all for the translator. If I use a different platform I have no useful terminology except in the clunkiest of ways. There should be a standard that allows any CAT tool to use the terminology management software that the translator prefers, and not just by making them type search terms into a box manually.

When studying at translation university, I was trained in a method on how to translate in a wide diversity of subjects, which saved me several years of trial and error, and got extensive guidance for the other aspects you mention. At that time CAT training was not included, nowadays it is.

That's definitely the biggest issue. Any product that can be shared will be shared, and there's usually no way to reverse the damage.
I have read though that many people who sell instructional/reference products are ok with them being shared. Apparently because the people who download the pirated copies aren't potential customers, they're the type who won't pay for anything. Also, as long as there's a link back to the original site it will serve as free advertising.
