Hello Jeff

I thought that might raise a few eyebrows! We quoted a low rate as a special introductory offer, and also applied a volume discount for the size of the project. Obvously we weren't the cheapest offer though, because as someone else on here as suggested, it would appear the outsourcer received an even tastier offer from another translator while I was still printing off the confidentiality agreement!

Are the translation portals the right places to look for translation jobs?
Don't they tend the needs of those offering low rates? For most translation offers, they do.

Before Proz.com et.al, you had to look for assignments yourself.
No bidding system back then.
It is better to lose a day by doing your homework properly and as a result being the online-house-translator at almost double your introductory rate than to jump on every offer.
Better 8000 words at double your rate than 16000.

In real-estate business, you quote a higher price in order to lower it a bit.
In the translation-business, you do the same.
The other way around will prove rather difficult.
Doing your homework means having all relevant legislation and paperwork at hand, ready to be faxed/emailed.

I wonder why IT-ers are dabbling translation. If you are a good programmer, you can earn a lot more as a freelance programmer than by being a translator-outsourcer.
