Drew
When this thread was started in October, I mentioned that I had seen text ads in profiles. I was unable to reproduce this to provide proof back then.
Text ads do indeed come up on profile pages sometimes. Here is a screenshot taken today from an "anonymous" profile that contains advertising for other proz users' services.

Inserting ads for other translators in a user's profile seems to imply some sort of connection or agreement between the two translators, especially since the language pairs coincide.
I would like to see ads removed from profile pages. | | | Drew MacFadyen United States Local time: 14:00 Spanish to English + ... Text ads on profile pages | Nov 30, 2010 |
Thank you Emma for the screen shot. I was not aware text ads appeared in this manner, I was referring to our advertising partners like SDL and wordfast, as well as Google Adsense ads.
I will discuss this issue of text ads appearing on profile pages internally, your screen shot is appreciated - thanks for taking the time to do that.
Were you logged in to your profile when you saw those ads?
Regards,

Hi Emma, those are not directory text ads, but are referrals - you can edit those by clicking the edit referrals icon under the map on the left hand side of your profile. Looks like your profile does not have any referrals, I assume that the screen shot was of another profile.

So there are/should be no ads on profile pages, and the profile you viewed simply had referrals listed under their account. These referrals can be edited, updated, hidden and removed. Although it should be pointed out that, non-members may have referrals auto generated for them based on search engine and profile page visits.
Hope this helps.
