Serbian to English: The final BBC World Service transmission in Serbian General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Media / Multimedia
Source text - Serbian
„Balkan service: Albanian, Macedonian, and Serbian...“
„This is London calling.“
„You are tuned to the general overseas service of the BBC.“
„This is Radio BBC in Beijing. Kampala. Reykjavik. Delhi. Wherever you are, you're with the BBC.“
Translation - English You are listening to the BBC. Good evening, this is London.
“The encirclement around Gaddafi is getting tighter. Tripoli is still under his control, but conflicts between armed groups loyal to Gaddafi and his opponents are going on in the capital's vicinity...”
This is how usually all the BBC World Service programs in Serbian would start until this 25th February 2011. From today, both announcements and programs in which you could hear “This is London” will become history due to...
Major changes in the BBC World Service.
“Balkan service: Albanian, Macedonian, and Serbian...”
Due to the economic crisis and the need to save money, 5 foreign language services out of 32 are closed, the Serbian service among them.
This is the last broadcasting of the BBC World Service in Serbian. A program that after exactly 71 years, 5 months, and 10 days of broadcasting through ether and through Internet channels closes its sliders, turns off its microphones and shuts down its computers. Therefore, do not hold it against us for dedicating the remaining 30 minutes of our radio life to our memories and mementos. Because this is, we guess, what should be done in situations like this is.
“This is London calling.”
“You are tuned to the general overseas service of the BBC.”
“This is London. British Radio Station is broadcasting today's last programme for Yugoslavia.”
“This is Radio BBC in Beijing. Kampala. Reykjavik. Delhi. Wherever you are, you're with the BBC.”
This is how history of the BBC World Service programme compressed into thirty seconds might sound. History of the Programme for Yugoslavia, and later Programme in Serbian, was much longer, uncovers my colleague Jelena Bogavac.

My regular daily job is teaching English to primary school pupils. Although it is demanding, it leaves me much time to work as freelance translator, which, actually, is my preferred and primary career.
I acquired academic degree in English Language and Literature at University of Banja Luka (Banja Luka, RS, BA). My secondary education is technical, and these two—languages and technics—are intertwined throughout my life, my interests, and my career.
Besides translating from English, I am fluent in Esperanto, I am skilled and experienced in noting and applying the preferred differences between Serbian/Bosniac/Croatian langauge variants, and I occasionally use German and Turkish languages. I am highly skilled and experienced in IT.
I am married and father of four.
