Problems - Word is very slow to save Thread poster: Alison Schwitzgebel
|
Hi there!
I'm running Office 2003 on a computer with Windows XP. I have McAfee internet security suite permanently enabled with all of the latest updates.
For the past few days I have been having problems using the "save as" function in Word and also when attaching files to e-mails. It takes an AGE to move between directories.
I've tried using the "recognize and repair" function but to no avail.
Any ideas? | | |

I've experienced similar problems, most of them was solved when I updated Office 2003 with Service Pack 2.
Hi!
What's your computer's speed, I mean DDR. If it's 256kb/s your computer will work slowly. You should better change it to higher DDR. And your internet will work faster, if it's not dial-up.

Hi Alison,
1. First, disconect from internet. Then disable antivirus. Close all programs for a few minutes until you finish doing step 2.
2. Perform a cleanup from your temporary files from internet and hard disk by going to these menus:

I hope this helps to increase speed a little. If not, try with other ideas at this forum.
Best regards,

Hi there!
I really don't think its a lack of RAM problem - I have 2GB.

Is it one and the same file (or set of files)? ... could be they have collected a lot of baggage, when stored as DOC.
Can not see any connection with email stuff i.e. any common cause...

RTF does not make any difference | Oct 9, 2006 |
Hi there!
It doesn't matter whether I save the files as .doc or .rtf - same problems.

In Word Options -> Save (I don't know the actual labels as my Word is French)
select the second option which looks like "allow quick saving"
Otherwise select the option "confirm Normal.dot saving" like this you could identify if the problem comes from the model normal.dot (as it saves it after you confirm).
Hope it helps

could be that there's not enough breathing space for the system as such - with all the temps etc that get collected with time ...

1) What proportion of your hard drive is full? (Right-click on C-drive icon in "My Computer") If it's more than about 80% full this is likely to be the source of your problem.
2) If you can't identify any other obvious cause, I'd definitely have a lurking fear of imminent hard disk failure and I'd be backing up my stuff carefully as a precaution.

Computer slow too? | Oct 10, 2006 |
Hi Alison,
how do your other programs behave? Is it only Word?
Call up the task manager (ctrl + alt + del (;)) and look at the Systemleistung and Prozesse to see how your resources are being used. I recently updated T-online and toaddmon.exe started causing problems. I disabled it and now things are much more stable. Perhaps you have a similar problem.
Good luck,

Jo Macdonald Spain Local time: 02:10 Member (2005) Italian to English + ... Bet it’s the antivirus | Oct 10, 2006 |
Hi Alison,
I had the same sort of probs when using Norton, getting interminable antivirus status bars when opening Word files, especially heavy ones. No probs since I switched to Avast and then Avg. Try excluding Word.exe from the files the antivirus checks or using an antivirus that doesn’t knock the stops out of everything. The freebies are just as good at catching viruses and a lot easier on your system.
