Until it isn't Sep 27, 2024

Yes, it will be tried, and then a catastrophic mistake is made at an crucial international peace conference or climate crisis meeting - and mayhem breaks out - total failure of reaching intended objective, sabre rattling, ill feeling etc. etc.

Until a humble human interpreter, skulking in the shadows, bravely grabs a microphone and speaks up "Actually, the emperor has no clothes on..." - oops, sorry, wrong story - "Actually, what the [Chinese, American, Russian ... insert according

And so order is restored and they all sit down to a lavish banquet, again.

Imagine... Sep 27, 2024

... a robot awkwardly smiling and nodding at multilingual events...

... apart from the awkward speech mistakes.
It would be like watching a double horror film!

So long, and thank you for all the fish Sep 27, 2024

Nope, sounds like someone else's wet dream.

I prefer Douglas Adam's Babel fish, from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy:

"The Babel fish is small, yellow, leech-like, and probably the oddest thing in the Universe. It feeds on brainwave energy received not from its own carrier, but from those around it. "The Babel fish is small, yellow, leech-like, and probably the oddest thing in the Universe. It feeds on brainwave energy received not from its own carrier, but from those around it. It absorbs all unconscious mental frequencies from this brainwave energy to nourish itself with. It then excretes into the mind of its carrier a telepathic matrix formed by combining the conscious thought frequencies with nerve signals picked up from the speech centres of the brain which has supplied them. The practical upshot of all this is that if you stick a Babel fish in your ear you can instantly understand anything said to you in any form of language. The speech patterns you actually hear decode the brainwave matrix which has been fed into your mind by your Babel fish."

What kind of "future"? Sep 29, 2024

Of the kind "coming soon in a theatre near you?

Are you serious? Only those seriously overdosing on hype could believe that.

Or of the kind "eventually in some rather distant future"?

Most likely.

But when AI becomes that good this question will be the least concern to humans, linguists or not. Much more urgent problem will be what will AI decide to do with all these stupid humans ...
