The pandemic had no effect (adverse or otherwise) on my workload. I did notice more pandemic-related translation work, but otherwise it was business as usual.

All-time high, for the 4th year in a row (+38% since 2018, +98% since 2006, my first complete year as a freelancer, having started in March 2005). But I think I have more or less 'arrived' now. Without increasing my working hours or my rates (neither which I plan to do) a few more % are still theoretically possible, but it's not very likely. From this year on things will be more or less the same or in decline, and I'm perfectly fine with both (of course to a certain extent ... Amount invoiced in 2022 compared to 2021.
But it's still higher than my 20-year, 10-year and 5-year average.

When translation market shrank, many colleagues of mine have left the business. I was among those who worked hard and thus managed to increase my earnings. It's translators' duty, after all, to prevent bridges between nations and cultures from falling. | | | Kay Denney France Local time: 13:08 French to English
Well I know it increased, and I know 2023 was a record year since I've been working freelance, but I wouldn't know by what percentage unless I looked at 2021 and worked out the difference. I chose to be a translator, not an accountant, so I don't give a toss about the percentage.

Depending on one's point of view, I've had a successful or not exactly successful year.
On one hand, I command a very high rate for any pair and especially my language pair(s), work with the best agencies out there, and I've managed to increase my income by 10%.
On the other hand, with the current inflation the purchasing power of the money I made has been two-three fold reduced, so my impressions of last year are bitter-sweet.

I was forced to ask for 10% and even 15% higher rates from the clients I've just signed up with, as well as, towards the end of 2022, reject loads of new job offers that make no financial sense to me. I did sign up with three good new agencies, so, so far so good, but rejecting even more offers than I was used to was difficult and counterintuitive, though necessary.
I am not touching my rates with my regular clients, since I mostly did, up to this year, work with boutique operations and I feel I wouldn't accomplish much but put them under pressure to shop around, as they are already paying me a very good rate.
All in all, not bad for someone who's joined the freelancing market in 2020, the first year of the pandemic, but there's loads of room for improvement for sure. I feel like this might be my year, though! I'm getting so many good offers right now and I feel very hopeful about 2023. ▲ Collapse | | | Lingua 5B Bosnia and Herzegovina Local time: 13:08 Member (2009) English to Croatian + ...
