January 12, 2026. Taxonomy: various hardware

Each taxonomy task is like a puzzle - I have to identify each technical term, and I have nothing but a few clues. Terms are short, and direct translation is not an option. I must use industry-specific language, because otherwise customers won't understand what I mean.

Here's an example. The term to translate: Quick Insert. Clues: the "category" value is "Notebooks", the "parameter" value is "Keyboard features". It means that the "Quick Insert" is a keyboard feature of a Notebook. I use websearch, and I find that this feature belongs to Chromebooks. I make another round of websearch to find the way how this feature is translated in official Russian manuals. The puzzle is solved :)

September 3, 2025. Fantasy RPG: Proofreading, 15 000 Words In 2 Days

A week ago I had a challenging task - to proofread 15 000 words in 2 days. Translation quality was decent but there still was some room for improvement. Usually I need 1 day to proofread 3 000 words, and if I hurry the quality suffers. This time the volume was 2 times larger. I realized that I have a choice: to sacrifice quality or to sacrifice my personal life. I always put quality first, of course, so I locked myself in my home office, ordered some food from a local store, made some coffee and prepared myself for a 2 day proofreading marathon! I was tired and exhausted when I have finished my task but I was sure - the quality of my work was formidable. And then I slept 12 hours :)

July 25, 2025. AI Training: Natural Sciences

A couple of days ago I finished a 9-hour AI training session. It was about natural sciences: my task was to check 100 AI-made translations of problems on chemistry, biology, physics, economics and some other disciplines. 9 000 words total. Well... AI became much better now but it still makes funny mistakes when working with industry-specific terms.

When doing AI training or MTPE, one should allways do a comprehensive research on your working topic. Because AI doesn't understand what it translates, and it doesn't know industry-specific slang and cliches yet. But I was proud to take part in creation of new smart AI-based tool!

July 19, 2025. Placeholders and You

There is a Golden Rule of dealing with placeholders which I follow. It says:

Rephrase it in such a way that all the placeholders are in the Nominative case. Use all you linguistic skill, all your wit, resource and creativity. The resulting sentence should be gramatically correct and it should flow well.

That's the Art of Localization! ;)

July 18, 2025. A Challenge of Placeholders

About a month ago I finished my work on a CCG (collectible card game). Developers used placeholders everywhere: for descriptions of card effects, rituals, mutators, monsters and artifacts. A typical segment in memoQ looked like this:

#ON(X)If [value2] Gain [Armour.Amount] [Armour].
#ON(Y)If [value5] Adjacent [Monsters] get [Couterattack.Amount] [Couterattack].
#ON(Z)If [value6] Apply [Frenzy].

All things in [square brackets] were proper names - effects, artifacts, statuses, etc. Their were meant to be shown as icons followed by text. That text had it's destinctive style (font, color, size), depending on the placeholder type. And developers saved a lot of time with these placeholders - they used precoded styles instead of writing miles of code, like:

#ON(X)If (an icon here) Power 2 (some coding to make it red, big and gothic) Gain [Armour.Amount] (an icon here) [Armour] (some coding to make it blue, not so big and underlined).

It was a great time saver for the devs. But for me it was a challenge!

You see, in Russian we have 7 cases for nouns, and there is a different word ending for each case. Adding a plural form gives you 14 different word endings! And the same thing is for adjectives. The problem was that firstly I had to translate all these things in [brackets] separatelly - and I could use one word form only, that one in a default Nominative case - and then I had to translate other segments.

If I was to translate the segment above directly as it is, the text would have had lots of grammatical errors. Becauses cases used were anything but Nominative:

#ON(X)If [value2] Gain [Armour.Amount] [Armour] (Genetive).
#ON(Y)If [value5] Adjacent [Monsters] (Nominative, plural) get [Couterattack.Amount] [Couterattack] (Genetive, plural).
#ON(Z)If [value6] Apply [Frenzy] (Accusative).

I had to rephrase each sentence in such a way that only the Nominative case is used. It was a real challenge but I succeded. 20 000 words and 60 000 placeholders in square brackets. Both logical and linguistic puzzle because some sentences were up to 100 words long!

Now, look how the segment above was translated:

#ON(X)Если [value2]: получите эффект [Effect1_name] ([Effect1.Amount]).
#ON(Y)Если [value5]: соседние [Monsters] получают свойство [Property1] ([ChangeMonsterProperties.Amount]).
#ON(Z)Если [value6]: наложите состояние [Status1].

[Effect1_name] = Броня
[Monsters] = Монстры
[Property1] = Контратака

[Status1] = Неистовство
