I've travelled recently and I did not even take my hardwares with me. I just realized that I wouldn't have time to work while involved in other activities.

As long as there is a Wi-Fi connection, I'm usually quite happy to take advantage of airport waiting times to get some work done, rather than just sitting around twiddling my thumbs.
Other (not any more) | Nov 24, 2022 |
My travelling days are over. I was a true digital nomad for a few years, flying every two weeks between Brussels (where my professional activity was) and Lisbon (where my family was). So, I did work a lot on airport halls and in planes until one day I got so tired of those that I moved back to Portugal. It was 7 years ago and now I am very happy being… a complete sedentary hermit!

I either travel or I work. I have grown used and quite attached to my own setup, especially the two large screens and the possibility to just switch to my own Steam library when I need a break or have to kill some time between jobs.
Challenging, but doable | Nov 24, 2022 |
For a location independent profession, I get the feeling most translators are actually quite sedentary.
Which is a bit surprising. Home is wherever you are.
You can adapt up to a point, but it can be challenging. Even on the road so to speak, it is good to follow a certain structure and have a certain setup.
Slow (not continuous) traveling helps too.

No problem
I used to live and work on the road.

I need complete silence to do my job properly. Traveling means public spaces, and public spaces are the antithesis of tranquility.
Well that, and the material I work with are supposed to be confidential i.e., for my eyes only.

If I am going to be away for more than 3 or 4 days I usually take my laptop with me. This way, I can get some work done during a long flight or after I visit my relatives and friends. Very convenient.
I often travel during holidays with my family so I'm happy to be able to work from everywhere (even if it can be quite frustrating not to participate in all activities with my relatives!)

away from home yes | Nov 24, 2022 |
All the family members I visit have wifi, so I can easily take my laptop and do any really urgent jobs.
As for "travelling", I don't fly anywhere if I can help it, so there is no working in airports for me.
Wifi on North Sea ferries is available at a price, so I wouldn't consider working on board, apart from having to carry the laptop up to the cabin as well as the overnight bag.

... or vacation, as we Americans call it. My only business activity is to remind my European customers that despite being an American I take a vacation. In fact, I'm taking this long weekend off. I'm just here today for a bit of entertainment before I celebrate Thanksgiving.
I used to work a little bit in hotels, but now I don't travel much any more.
I don't work when on vacation, got other things to do, like enjoying nature and having fun. I am not a 'work junk' and refuse to become one. There is a time for everything, working when at home and relaxing while travelling.
Works fine for me. | | |
