Nay, nay and thrice nay. I'm fortunate enough not to have to rely on agencies or clients who require this sort of thing. I use WF classic, although I don't leverage all of its functions. It's cheap and cheerful and does what I need it to.

Nope. CafeTran Espresso offers a perfect compatibility with Studio projects. Except for Tracking changes ...

Only when I have to track changes / accept or ignore changes in Studio projects, I go for a cup of coffee while Studio is firing up.

I don't use CAT tools, with one exception: one of my very regular customers provides me their online CAT tool platform to work on. So, I do turn down work when Trados is required, but I don’t care. At this stage of my career I’m much more interested in keeping my long-standing customers than in gaining new clients. I must say also that I have been contacted a few times with the strict recommendation to not use a CAT tool…

Happy without CAT tool Jul 29, 2021

My main clients don't use CAT tools. I'm happy with them, and they seem to be happy with me. I'm not looking to expand my client base.

Got a license but nearly never use it Jul 29, 2021

I have a Trados license and some of my clients work with Trados packages, but I do all that work with MemoQ, I never needed to fire up my Trados installation in the last few years.

Nope Jul 29, 2021

Until now, I have never had to turn down any offer because of the use or not of Trados.
I get asked much more often if I can work on Memsource or Polyglot, which I do if my client/agency provides me an access.
Other than that, I have the free version of MemoQ but even this one is not usually required by my other clients who are fine with simply using MS Word.

Specific clients' CAT platforms Jul 29, 2021

Interestingly enough, those few clients who do require CAT tools provide to me their own platforms, which happen to be memoQ and TextUnited, not Trados.
Other than that, no CAT tool at all - and couldn't be happier!

Yes Jul 29, 2021

I turn down quite a few projects because they require Trados, but i don't really care. And actually, three of my regular clients provide SDL GroupShare, which is ok, but has its limitations and glitches.

My own and preferred CAT is Wordfast PRO, but I don't get to use it as much as I would like to, since more and more agencies offer free access to a host of different CATS e.g. Memsource, MemoQ, Access, Wordbee etc.

Happy with my CAT + It makes no difference Jul 29, 2021

Only a client who doesn't know much about CAT tools will turn down a MemoQ user because he doesn't have Trados. Most CATs exchange files with no trouble. I've had several clients ask me if I use Trados, and I say I use MemoQ and they can send me an mxliff file exported from Trados, and it will be the same thing. Only a few turned this option down, due to absolute lack of knowledge.

Never happened Jul 30, 2021

As far as I can recall, I have never turned down a job because Trados was required, nor has a client ever told me they can't send me translation work because I don't use Trados.

Is Trados so incompatible with other CAT tools that for certain clients it's the only one that will do? I'm genuinely curious here.

Isn't this a bit like Uber telling prospective drivers, "You can only work for us if you drive a Mercedes"?

Deja Vu X3 ... Jul 30, 2021

... still does its job, and very brilliantly for me. Although I own a Studio licence, actually I would not need it, because you can easily rename a Studio project (xxx.sdlppx) into a zip file (xxx.zip), which contains the same file structure as a Studio project does have. You may then take the xxx.sdlxliff file to process it in any CAT you like, which is able to process xlf based files.

Mario you don't even need that, memoQ is fine with SDL packages and sdlxliff files, which make up 75% of my work.

I use Trados already and Other Jul 30, 2021

Those who have experience with one translation tool and know how to use it, be it Trados Studio, Memoq, etc., will know how to work with any other CAT Tool.
Therefore, nobody needs to decline work just because the client sends you work in a certain format (as Trados).
Clients don't care if we translate with X or Y, what they want is quality translations delivered on time.

Obviously, some of them require the translation file in the same format they provide, but it's not a big problem; we can make use of plug-ins.
I use Trados already, but I don't decline work if a client sends me a file in Memsource, Wordfast, or Memoq formats.
Also, we are starting to see a lot of translation agencies giving us a license, so we do not need to buy a program.
Well, I use CAT Tools, and I'm very happy with them.
