My website (www.murieltranslations,com) has given me several good clients. The best one, who found me 5 years ago, kept me busy nonstop for three years, but the volume has tapered off. (I'm working for them right now.)
It has also brought me in contact with some interesting people and created opportunities for me.

Further I am writing news letters and have tried a mailing via a marketing forum, but nothing till now came out.
Perhaps it has something to do with SEO, perhaps not, but in fact I don't really believe in the success of a website. It is just a visit card. ▲ Collapse

I still don't have a website. I've been thinking about it and preparing it mentally for the past two years, but when I see polls like this one, it makes me delay it even more. If it will not bring me more clients, it's useless, and additonal time to take care of it.

My professional website is curretly my ProZ page. I get 80% of my clients from ProZ. I see many people saying they never get jobs throgh ProZ. When you check their profiles, they don't have KudoZ points. Then, of course, you won't get jobs, clients or even messages. If you are not willing to help your colleagues answering their questions... you might as well try the lotteries. As soon as I appeared among the 10 first users in the research pages, I started receiving e-mails from clients practically every day. ▲ Collapse

I receive less than 25% of my projects from my website ( www.yam.com.mx ), which is mainly a sort of business card. My Proz profile has been more useful.

One might feel tempted to say that a website, professional or otherwise, or a blog, has no bearing on your finding translation jobs or clients. Well, I don't.
I don't feel tempted, I mean.
It is possible that word of mouth and simply effective personal or telephone communications are enough to keep a translator busy without the need of a website. It is possible that word of mouth and simply effective personal or telephone communications are enough to keep a translator busy without the need of a website. Then again, some translators do take care of their websites (or blogs) and report getting jobs and/or clients. My conclusion? It's a nice tool, but it doesn't seem all that essential.
Now, if you meet prospects or colleagues, having a professionally designed and printed business card to offer is essential.
As for Kudoz points, those who espouse gaining them should consider that offering help to Proz colleagues can be time consuming and not that productive, depending on what questions are involved. No need to toot your own horn.

Much less than 25%.
I had my clients and the new ones have reached me through Proz or because I contacted them when I needed to expand my client base.
The website is useful to give all the information but actually I have to admit it is visited when I give the link.
