UNDERSTANDING POUR PRESSURE...
CRITICAL TO CONCRETE FORMING
EFCO has come to be known to have forms that are “the strongest in the industry” and some have said, mistakenly, they are strong enough to resist any pour pressures you can put to them. Today, we use high speed concrete delivery systems like pumps to place high performance concrete (HPC) that may not harden as fast as concrete we placed 30 years ago. This is a serious “WARNING” to users of EFCO and all form systems.
The recent and rapid development of concrete additives to liquefy concrete mixes for easy compaction can drastically increase the concrete form pressures exerted on forming systems. The rapid development of this technology has dramatically improved concrete finish quality and the ultimate strength of concrete. But, misuse of these concrete mix improvements have also contributed to form failures, resulting in construction worker deaths.
HPC is continuing to evolve as we learn more about cementitious materials. In addition to Portland cement, the mix may include fly ash, slag, silica fume or other materials to bond aggregates together. To use these materials effectively, engineers will specify lower water to cement ratios to improve the strength, permeability, and durability of hardened concrete. The low water cement mixes are difficult to use without water reducing admixtures (aka plasticizers). Water reducers and other additives that improve the properties of HPC may also slow the initial hardening process of concrete.
High capacity placing techniques with HPC that hardens slowly may cause a serious accident. Pumps may place concrete so fast that concrete will remain liquid at the bottom of a pour. As 10 to 40 feet of liquid concrete builds pressure in the form, forms may bulge, ties may break, and forms may even rupture. In extreme accidents, workers may be injured or killed when the form explodes. Form users must be aware that potential accidents may happen on their site if they do not take precautions.
We always need to be aware of concrete temperature at time of delivery. Historically, this has been the most important variable in determining the pressure in the form. Cool concrete hardens more slowly than warm concrete. In some climates warm concrete will harden before it is placed, causing a different problem. A retarder may be added to the mix to keep the concrete “alive” but this will make the concrete behave like cool concrete. Cool concrete means that the concrete will be liquid inside the form for a longer period of time, causing higher pressures. When the pressure exceeds the rated pressure, the form may bulge and rupture.
For pavements and horizontal work, additives only change the time required to finish the concrete. For vertical concrete, a decrease in concrete temperature will increase the lateral pressure on formwork. Today we have the option of using pumps with almost unbelievable capacity to place concrete. When placing concrete in wall forms with a bucket, it is hard to reach 10’ per hour. With pumps, placement rates exceeding 20’ per hour are easily achievable. This alone may cause excessive pressure inside the form. But when we add the retarding effects of chemistry and temperature, the forms may reach capacity before many users are aware of the problem.
This is a “WARNING”.

EFCO es conocida por tener los encofrados “más resistentes de la industria” y algunos han dicho, erróneamente, lo suficientemente resistentes para resistir cualquier presión de vaciado. Hoy, usamos sistemas de entrega de concreto de alta velocidad como las bombas para colocar concreto de alto rendimiento (HPC) que no se puede endurecer tan rápido como el concreto que colocábamos hace 30 años. Además del cemento Pórtland, la mezcla puede incluir polvo de ceniza, escoria, humo de sílice u otros materiales para ligar el pedregullo. Para utilizar estos materiales eficazmente, los ingenieros especificaran menor agua en la proporción de cemento para mejorar la resistencia, permeabilidad y durabilidad del concreto endurecido. Las mezclas de cemento con bajo nivel de agua son difíciles de usar sin aditivos (aka plasticizador). Los reductores de agua y otros aditivos que mejoran las propiedades de HPC pueden también demorar el proceso de endurecimiento inicial del concreto.
Las técnicas de colocación de alta capacidad con HPC que se endurece lentamente pueden ocasionar serios accidentes. Las bombas pueden colocar el concreto tan rápido que el concreto queda liquido en el fondo del vaciado. En accidentes extremos los operarios se pueden lastimar o morir si el encofrado explota. Los usuarios de encofrados deben tener conocimiento de los posibles accidentes que pueden ocurrir en la obra si no toman las precauciones necesarias.
Siempre debemos conocer la temperatura del concreto en el momento de la entrega. Históricamente esta ha sido la variable más importante para determinar la presión en el encofrado. El concreto frío se endurece más lentamente que el caliente. En algunos climas el concreto caliente se endurece antes de colocarlo, causando un problema diferente. Se le puede agregar un retardador a la mezcla para mantener el concreto “vivo” pero esto hará que el concreto se comporte como el frío. “Concreto frío” significa que va a estar líquido dentro del encofrado por más tiempo, causando mayor presión. Cuando la presión excede la fijada, el encofrado se puede ensanchar y romper.
Para pavimentos o trabajos horizontales, los aditivos solo cambian el tiempo requerido para la terminación de concreto. Para el concreto vertical, un descenso en la temperatura del concreto aumentará la presión lateral en el encofrado. Hoy contamos con la posibilidad de usar bombas con una increíble capacidad para colocar concreto. Cuando uno coloca concreto con un balde, es difícil alcanzar los 3,3m por hora. Con bombas, se pueden lograr colocaciones que exceden los 6,6m fácilmente. Esto solamente puede ejercer excesiva presión dentro del encofrado. Pero cuando le agregamos los efectos retardantes de la química y la temperatura, los encofrados pueden alcanzar su capacidad antes que muchos usuarios se den cuenta del problema.
Esta es una “ADVERTENCIA”.
