Source text - English Humoral response and colostral antibody transfer following 'one-dose' pre-mating vaccination of sows against porcine circovirus type-2.
There is currently only one porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) vaccine specifically licensed for use in sows, and this is usually administered on two or more occasions prior to mating or farrowing reported the effect of vaccinating sows twice before mating with an inactivated chimeric PCV1–2 vaccine on viral vertical transmission. However, there is little information on the impact of vaccination on only one occasion prior to mating on PCV2 antibody concentrations in sow serum and colostrum. The objective of this study was to look for PCV2 DNA and antibody to this virus in the serum and colostrum of sows vaccinated prior to mating, and in their offspring.
The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) DNA and antibody to the virus in the serum and colostrum of sows vaccinated prior to mating and in their offspring. Seventy-seven sows were randomly distributed into vaccinated (V, n=36) and non-vaccinated (NV, n=41) groups. One week before mating, sows were given a PCV2 vaccine (V group) or PBS (NV group) IM. Blood samples were taken from the sows at fixed time-points and colostrum samples were taken at farrowing. Blood samples were also taken from the piglets of the sows at 4 weeks of age. The results indicated that vaccination prior to mating elicited a strong, homogeneous humoral response and, in consequence, more homogeneous colostral PCV2 antibody concentrations.
In conclusion this study revealed that immunisation of sows with one dose of commercial PCV2 vaccine prior to mating induces a robust humoral response that results in the provision of high concentrations of homogeneous colostral antibody.
Translation - Catalan Resposta humoral y transferència d’anticossos calostrals després d’una sola dosi de vacuna contra el circovirus porcí de tipus 2 prèvia a la inseminació de la truja.
Actualment només hi ha una vacuna contra el circovirus porcí de tipus 2 (PCV2) autoritzada específicament per al ús en truges, que normalment s’administra en dues o més ocasions prèvies a la inseminació o després del part. O’Neil va documentar els efectes que es produeixen en la transmissió vertical vírica en administrar dues vegades abans de la inseminació una vacuna PCV1-2 quimèrica desactivada a truges. Tot i així, hi ha poca informació sobre l’efecte que té en les concentracions d’anticossos de PCV2 en el sèrum i el calostre de la truja una única vacuna prèvia a la inseminació. L’objectiu d’aquest estudi va ser buscar ADN de PCV2 i anticossos d’aquest virus en el sèrum i el calostre de truges vacunades abans de la inseminació i en els garrins.
L’objectiu d’aquest estudi va ser investigar la presència d’ADN de circovirus porcí de tipus 2 (PCV2) i d’anticossos d’aquest virus en el sèrum i el calostre de truges vacunades abans de la inseminació i en els garrins. Es van distribuir de manera aleatòria setanta-set truges en dos grups, vacunades (V, n=36) i no vacunades (NV, n=41). Una setmana abans de la inseminació es van inocular les truges amb una vacuna de PCV2 i.m. (el grup V) o amb PBS i.m. (el grup NV). Es van prendre mostres de sang de les truges en moments fixos i mostres de calostre en el moment del garrinat. També es van prendre mostres de sang dels garrins a les 4 setmanes del naixement. Els resultats van indicar que la vacuna prèvia a la inseminació es traduïa en una resposta humoral forta i homogènia i, en conseqüència, en concentracions d’anticossos de PCV2 calostrals més homogènies.
En conclusió, aquest estudi va revelar que la immunització de truges amb una dosi de vacuna comercial contra PCV2 prèvia a la inseminació indueix una sòlida resposta humoral en la provisió de concentracions elevades d’anticossos calostrals homogènies.

Source text - English Exploring the risks of a putative transmission of BSE to new species.
The prion responsible for the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) shows unique features when compared with other prions. One of these features is its ability to infect almost all experimentally tested animal models. In the paper published in The Journal of Neuroscience 1 we describe a series of experiments directed toward elucidating which would be the in vivo behavior of BSE if it would infect dogs and rabbits, two alleged prion resistant species. Protein misfolding cyclic amplification (PMCA) was used to generate canidae and leporidae in vitro adapted BSE prions. A characterization of their in vivo pathobiological properties showed that BSE prions were capable not only of adapting to new species but they maintained, in the case of rabbits, their ability to infect transgenic mice expressing human PrP. The remarkable adaptation ability of certain prions implies that any new host species could lead to the emergence of new infectious agents with unpredictable transmission potential. Our results suggest that caution must be taken when considering the use of any mammal derived protein in feedstuffs.

El prión responsable de la encefalopatía espongiforme bovina (EEB) muestra características únicas cuando se compara con otros priones. Una de estas características es su capacidad de infectar a casi todos los modelos de animales en pruebas experimentales. En el artículo publicado en The Journal of Neuroscience1 describimos una serie de experimentos dirigidos a elucidar cual sería el comportamiento in vivo de la EEB si se infectasen perros y conejos, dos especies que presuntamente son resistentes a los priones. Se utilizó la amplificación cíclica del malplegamiento proteico (PMCA) para generar priones EEB in vitro adaptados a cánidos y leporinos. La determinación de sus propiedades patológicas in vivo mostró que los priones de EEB no solo eran capaces de adaptarse a nuevas especies sino que mantenían, en el caso de los conejos, su capacidad de infectar ratones transgénicos que expresan PrP humano. La notable capacidad de adaptación de algunos priones implica que cualquier especie portadora nueva podría conducir al surgimiento de nuevos agentes infecciosos con potencial transmisor desconocido. Nuestros resultados sugieren que es necesaria la precaución cuando se considere el uso de cualquier proteína derivada de mamíferos en la confección de piensos.
