Last April I asked the writer Lewis Hyde if he would take a trip with me to Walden Pond, in Concord, Mass. At 63, Hyde has boyishly tousled brown-gray hair, freckled, soft-looking cheeks and the slightly abstracted gaze of a man who spends a disproportionate amount of his time in library carrels. He has an ironic streak, but his default mode is a kind of easygoing acquiescence, and so one slate gray Saturday afternoon he picked me up in Cambridge, where he lives and works half the year, and drove us the 12 miles west to Walden.
Hyde knows the area well — among his ongoing projects is a detailed series of annotations of Henry David Thoreau’s essays — and he led me down a dirt path from the parking lot to the site of the cabin where, more than 150 years ago, Thoreau wrote his celebrated paean to solitude and self-reliance. The cabin no longer exists. In its place there is a lightly excavated, cordoned-off square of soil and, to its side, a waist-high cairn erected in commemoration by generations of pilgrims.
Our own visit wasn’t commemorative, but it was a pilgrimage of a sort. Hyde has been writing and publishing for more than three decades, and he has received numerous high-profile awards, including a MacArthur “genius grant” in 1991, but his name is still obscure to most readers. His body of work is slim; he has published two books, a volume of poems and a smattering of essays, translations and edited anthologies. His reputation, however, is rich. David Foster Wallace called him “one of our true superstars of nonfiction.” Hyde’s fans — among them Zadie Smith, Michael Chabon and Jonathan Lethem — routinely use words like “transformative” and “life-altering” to describe his books, which they’ve been known to pass hand to hand like spiritual texts or samizdat manifestoes. The source of much of this reverence is Hyde’s first book, “The Gift” (1983), which has never been out of print (it was recently rereleased by Vintage in a 25th-anniversary edition) and which tries to reconcile the value of doing creative work with the exigencies of a market economy.

Компания M&PARTNERS успешно провела новую рекламную кампанию торгового центра МЕГА в Москве и регионах.
В этой рекламной кампании перед агентством стояла задача отразить настроение в период покупки новогодних подарков и показать стильные и модные товары, которые можно купить в МЕГЕ в проходящем сезоне. В окончательном макете должно было появиться два предмета, один из которых был бы товаром, а другой воплощал предстоящий праздник в лаконичных образах - знаках.
Новый год, в первую очередь, ассоциируется с белым снегом, новогодней елкой и бородатым Дедом Морозом в красно-белой шубе. Именно поэтому была выбрана красно-белая цветовая гамма. В качестве главного символа Нового Года использовались шведские традиционные новогодние игрушки из фетра, которые, одновременно, представляют собой идеальную знаковую систему узнаваемых силуэтов-образов (олени, ангелочки, снежинки, тролли, подарочные сапожки, снеговики).

MCDONNELL & PARTNERS Successfully Carries Out New Advertizing Campaign for MEGA Malls in and Around Moscow.
Our agency was commissioned to develop a Christmas shopping advertizing campaign for MEGA – a major subsidiary of IKEA – and to showcase some stylish items for the upcoming season. Ultimately, the layouts included a product-item and a symbol-item, which embodied the Christmas season in sales.
To Russians, the New Year is primarily associated with white snow, Christmas trees and a bearded Father Frost donning a red and white overcoat. That’s why we opted for red and white as the dominant themes of our campaign. We also chose traditional Swedish felt ornaments as main symbols of the New Year celebrations. We decided that the ornaments (such as deer, angels, snowflakes, elves, stockings, snowmen, etc.) comprised an ideal semiotic system of highly recognizable silhouettes, and at the same time provided a subtle allusion to the Scandinavian origins of our client, which we wanted to reflect.
The next task our creative team faced was to combine two key elements – the product and the symbol – into a single advertizing image. Here we decided to embrace the game method: each of the product items is paired with a silhouette or some element of the non-dominant symbol items, which serve only as accessories to the product items. One of the items is invariably red, and the other is white. Thus a red, embroidered fir tree appears with a snow-white boot and a snowman ornament with a stylish red handbag. In this way, we created a whole line of designer items that appeal to the public, and are associated with the major retail period of the year: “New Year’s Shopping”. As a result, we have produced a friendly and recognizable image, clearly visible from long distances, which was crucial for the success of a campaign that relied heavily on outdoor billboards.
Independent experts in the advertizing sphere recognized the “Shopping for Presents” campaign as the most visually attractive campaign of the year.

I am a native speaker of Russian currently residing in the US.
For six years I worked as a Project Manager and Art Director for various Public Relations and Marketing agencies in Moscow. I had the chance to participate in major national projects and from this experience to get a good idea of what those dry (or colorful) marketing terms really entail. I have experience translating all kinds of marketing materials from challenging reality show subtitles with jokes and slang to site localization, and to marketing research and analysis papers, presentations, toolkits, and press releases.
For now I consider marketing my main field of concentration and approach each translation with the curiosity of an explorer because each and every text contains new terminology and new things to explore. To assure the best possible quality, I research every new word and learn as much about its context as possible.
Through my research and writing experience (I write articles for Russian media, mostly on different American issues) I have also familiarized myself with the terminology in the fields of Ecology (recycling), Social Sciences, Politics, Hospitality, and Architecture (restoration), gained work experience translating General Scientific and Journalism texts. Through my training I have in-depth skills and am capable of translating in the Fine Arts, Design, and Art History areas.
