Source text - English Let's face it. The odds are vanishingly small that you, or anyone else picking up this book, needs any kind of introduction to Alan Moore. It's a pretty foregone conclusion that you've already devoured every comic of Alan's that you could get your mitts on and probably had your life changed by more than a few. You've been spellbound by his prose novel, mesmerized by his spoken word cd's and busted a gut to see him on the Simpsons. And you've no doubt groaned your way through the ham fisted hatchet jobs Hollywood has made of some of his best work.
What you're probably far more interested in is how the mind that conceived Marvelman, Swamp Thing, Watchmen, From Hell, Promethea, Lost Girls and all those other masterpieces, actually operates. You might very well have picked up this essential volume, in which Alan shares his approach to comic book writing, looking for some clues to what really makes him tick. Having had the good fortune to collaborate with the guy for 25 years, I get the question from comic book fans all the time. As a result of the constant requests, I've developed a pet theory on that very subject, most of which boils down to the fact that Alan Moore's mind simply doesn't work like most other people's.
I'm convinced that, after many more creative and productive decades, when Alan finally gives up the flesh and joins the transmigration of souls into idea space, a careful study of his remains will reveal that certain areas of the Moore brain, especially those parts associated with imagination, intuition, memory and language, to be far larger than one might expect in the normal human. Perhaps scientists will discover extra arteries pumping an enhanced blood flow to those cranial regions or some enzyme that promotes rich neuron growth. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they come upon some sort of new and bizarre mutation in the formation of the lobes.
This isn't as flip as it sounds; at least when talking of a highly developed creative mind like Alan's. Mozart, thought to have musical and mathematical brain functions that bordered on autism, provided the world with some of the most sublime music ever created. And, after death, Albert Einstein's brain was doled out in slices to scientists seeking a link between those analytical and intuitive centers that gave us the theory of relativity.

La probabilità che chiunque stia tenendo in mano questo libro abbia realmente bisogno di un qualsivoglia tipo d’introduzione alla figura di Alan Moore è assolutamente fantasmatica. Si può presumere piuttosto seriamente che voi abbiate già divorato ogni fumetto di Alan su cui siete riusciti a mettere le mani, e questo presumibilmente ha cambiato la vostra vita in misura non insignificante. Siete rimasti ammaliati dalla sua prosa romanzesca, mesmerizzati dalle parole declamate nei suoi CD, ed elettrizzati all’idea di vederlo comparire in un prossimo episodio de I Simpson . E sicuramente avrete sputato la vostra dose di veleno e maledizioni per l’ottuso e grossolano utilizzo che Hollywood ha fatto di alcune delle sue opere migliori.
Ciò a cui probabilmente siete più interessati è capire come realmente operi la mente che ha concepito Marvelman, Swamp Thing, Watchmen, From Hell, Promethea, Lost Girls e tutti quegli altri capolavori. È assai facile che vi siate portati a casa questo essenziale volume, in cui Alan condivide il suo approccio alla scrittura dei fumetti, in cerca di qualche indizio sul suo effettivo funzionamento. Avendo avuto la fortuna di collaborare con il nostro uomo per ben venticinque anni, mi sento rivolgere continuamente queste domande dagli appassionati di fumetto. E come conseguenza di tali costanti richieste, ho sviluppato una mia teoria su questo argomento, teoria che per lo più si riduce alla convinzione che la mente di Alan Moore semplicemente non funziona come quella della maggior parte delle altre persone.
Sono convinto che, dopo molti altri decenni creativi e produttivi, quando Alan finalmente abbandonerà la carne mortale e si unirà alla trasmigrazione delle anime nel reame delle idee, un attento studio dei suoi resti rivelerà che certe aree del cervello mooriano, specialmente le zone associate all’immaginazione, all’intuizione, alla memoria e al linguaggio, sono molto più grandi di quanto ci si aspetterebbe in un normale essere umano. Forse gli scienziati scopriranno delle arterie supplementari che pompano un flusso sanguigno potenziato alle suddette regioni craniche, o qualche enzima che favorisce un’ampia crescita neuronale. Non mi sorprenderebbe affatto se arrivassero a identificare qualche tipo di nuova e bizzarra mutazione nella forma dei suoi lobi.
Tutto questo discorso non è poi così faceto come sembra; o almeno, non lo è nel momento in cui si sta parlando di una mente creativa altamente sviluppata come quella di Alan. Mozart, che relativamente a musica e matematica si ritiene possedesse funzioni cerebrali che confinavano con l’autismo, diede al mondo alcuni dei più sublimi brani musicali mai creati. E dopo la sua morte, il cervello di Albert Einstein fu sezionato e distribuito fra scienziati che cercavano un legame tra i centri analitici e intuitivi a cui dobbiamo la teoria della relatività.
