Head lice are bloodsucking insects without wings. They are parasites that feed on human blood. Head lice have ‘specialised’ in living on human heads. The specially shaped body and small oval head ensure that the louse can move easily through the hair on your head. At 20 degrees Celsius, head lice can move at around 30 cm per minute. The higher the temperature, the faster the lice can move. Head lice have six legs, which they can use to attach themselves to the hair. Generally speaking, head lice can be found behind the ears, along the hairline and in the neck, as these areas are warm and dark. Head lice can adapt their colour to the colour of the hair, which makes them difficult to spot. The colour of the louse can vary from sandy-coloured to nearly black. After they have fed on blood they become dark red. Head lice occur most frequently in children aged 5 to 12.

Hoofdluizen zijn vleugelloze insecten die bloed zuigen. Het zijn parasieten die zich voeden met menselijk bloed. Ze zijn gespecialiseerd in het leven op hoofden van mensen; hun speciaal gevormde lichaam en klein, ovaal hoofd zorgen er namelijk voor dat ze gemakkelijk door het hoofdhaar kunnen bewegen. Bij 20 graden Celsius kunnen hoofdluizen ongeveer 30cm per minuut afleggen. Hoe hoger de temperatuur, hoe sneller ze kunnen kruipen. Hoofdluizen hebben zes poten waarmee ze zich kunnen vastklemmen aan de haren. Over het algemeen leven ze achter de oren, tegen de haarbasis en in de nek omdat het daar warm en donker is. Ze zijn moeilijk te zien omdat ze hun kleur, die varieert van bruin tot bijna zwart, kunnen aanpassen aan de kleur van het haar. Wanneer ze bloed gezogen hebben worden ze donkerrood. Hoofdluizen komen vaakst voor bij kinderen van 5 tot 12 jaar.
