Source text - English The cooler an object is, the longer the wavelengths of light it emits. With temperatures of 50 K or less, cool portions of interstellar gas and cosmic dust emit light at far-infrared (25 to 350 μm) and sub-millimetre (350 μm to 1 mm) wavelengths, much longer than our eyes can see. So how do we know that these cold objects exist? To capture the radiation and ‘see’ the objects in wavelengths beyond the visible range, astronomers use dedicated far-infrared (FIR), sub-millimetre (sub-mm) and microwave telescopes.
This approach comes with challenges: light at these long wavelengths is absorbed by water vapour and other molecules in Earth’s atmosphere, which makes observations from the ground extremely difficult and, at FIR wavelengths, simply impossible. For most infrared wavelengths, the atmosphere itself also emits light, adding an unwanted source of noise to the cosmic signals that astronomers are interested in.

The European Space Agency (ESA) journeyed even higher on 14 May 2009 when they launched two new space observatories. Operating beyond Earth’s atmosphere, the Herschel Space Observatory and the Planck satellite studied the cold and the distant Universe. In astronomical terms, looking at distant objects means looking back in time. When a telescope observes a galaxy 100 million light years away, we see the galaxy as it was 100 million years ago when the light was emitted. And because our Universe is expanding, the wavelength of light emitted by distant stars and galaxies is stretched even longer by the time it reaches telescopes on or near Earth – a phenomenon known as redshift.

Przy temperaturze 50 K i niższej, chłodne obszary gazu międzygwiazdowego i pyłu kosmicznego emitują światło w zakresie dalekiej podczerwieni (25 do 350 μm) oraz submilimetrowym (350 μm do 1 mm), czyli o falach o wiele dłuższych, niż dostrzegalne dla naszych oczu. Skąd więc wiemy, że te chłodne obiekty istnieją? Aby wykryć promieniowanie i „dostrzec” obiekty w zakresie wykraczającym poza światło widzialne, astronomowie korzystają z wyspecjalizowanych teleskopów rejestrujących fale podczerwone, submilimetrowe oraz mikrofale.
Podejście takie nie jest pozbawione trudności: światło o tych długościach jest pochłaniane przez parę wodną i inne cząsteczki ziemskiej atmosfery, co czyni obserwacje naziemne niezwykle skomplikowanymi, a w przypadku dalekiej podczerwieni po prostu niemożliwymi. Atmosfera emituje światło o długości wielu fal podczerwonych, sama będąc niechcianym źródłem szumu tłumiącym kosmiczne sygnały, którymi zainteresowani są astronomowie.

Europejska Agencja Kosmiczna (ang. European Space Agency, ESA) poszła o krok dalej i 14 maja 2009 roku wystrzeliła w kosmos dwa nowe obserwatoria kosmiczne. Kosmiczne Obserwatorium Herschela oraz satelita Planck pracowały ponad ziemską atmosferą badając chłodny i daleki wszechświat. W astronomii obserwacja dalekich obiektów oznacza cofanie się w czasie. Teleskop obserwujący galaktykę oddaloną o 100 milionów lat świetlnych pokazuje nam ten obiekt takim, jak wyglądał on 100 milionów lat temu, gdy światło zostało przez niego wyemitowane. Nasz wszechświat rozszerza się, więc długość fal świetlnych uwolnionych przez odległe gwiazdy i galaktyki zostaje rozciągnięta jeszcze bardziej zanim dotrze do teleskopu na Ziemi czy w jej okolicach – zjawisko to nazywane jest przesunięciem ku czerwieni.

Source text - English Someone in space or on another planet in our solar system could choose a distinct surface feature on Earth, such as Madagascar, then note its position and click a stopwatch. When Madagascar returns to the position it was in when the stopwatch was started, the observer could note the elapsed time. If they measured precisely enough, they would find that Earth rotates once per 23.934 hours. That's Earth's rotation rate — the very definition of a day.
Using the same principle, Earthlings have learned the rotation rates of other planets. A day on Mercury lasts about two Earth months. And a Mars day lasts 24.623 Earth hours, barely longer than Earth's. But watching surface features does not work equally well for all planets.
When the bulk of a planet swims beneath thousands of miles of atmosphere, the challenge of clocking its rotation rate is even tougher. The swirling cloud bands on a gas planet like Saturn and Jupiter move at different rates, making it impossible to use the clouds to measure the planet's rotation rate. But even then, scientists have a couple aces up their sleeve: the planet's magnetic field and radio wave emissions.
Translation - Polish Osoba znajdująca się w przestrzeni kosmicznej lub na innej planecie Układu Słonecznego mogłąby wybrać charakterystyczny punkt na powierzchni Ziemi, na przykład Madagaskar, a następnie odnotować jego pozycję i uruchomić stoper. Gdy Madagaskar wróciłby do pozycji, w jakiej znajdował się w momencie włączenia stopera, obserwatorka mogłaby stwierdzić, ile czasu upłynęło od tego momentu. Gdyby wykonała pomiar z dużą precyzją odkryłaby, że Ziemia wykonuje jeden obrót na 23,934 godziny. To okres obrotu Ziemi – czyli właśnie definicja dnia.
Według tej samej zasady udało nam się obliczyć okresy obrotu innych planet. Dzień na Merkurym trwa około dwóch ziemskich miesięcy. Dzień marsjański trwa 24,623 ziemskiej godziny, czyli niewiele dłużej niż dzień na Ziemi. Jednak przyglądanie się charakterystycznym cechom powierzchni nie działa w przypadku wszystkich planet.
Gdy planeta pokryta jest tysiącem kilometrów atmosfery, trudność zmierzenia okresu jej obrotu jest jeszcze większa. Wirujące pasy chmur na planetach takich jak Saturn czy Jowisz poruszają się z różną prędkością, co uniemożliwia wykorzystanie ich do pomiaru okresu ich rotacji. Jednak nawet w takim przypadku naukowcy mają parę asów w rękawie: pole magnetyczne planety oraz emisja fal radiowych.

Source text - Polish Aleksytymia utrudnia związki
Aleksytymik nie tylko nie potrafi komunikować swych emocji innym, ale też nie jest zdolny, aby wpuścić do swego wnętrza otaczające go osoby. Ponieważ nie przypisuje emocjom słów i pojęć, nie posiada środków, aby zrozumieć cudze uczucia. Tym samym niemożliwe jest dla niego normalne funkcjonowanie społeczne. Nie jest zdolny do empatii i nie potrafi nawiązywać więzi międzyludzkich. Związki partnerskie aleksytymika skazane są na niepowodzenie, bowiem nie może on zrozumieć uczuć partnera. Ponadto nie rozumiejąc swoich negatywnych emocji ma tendencję do lokowania winy na zewnątrz i zrzuca odpowiedzialność na otoczenie, a to bezpośredni powód niszczenia relacji z innymi.
Aleksytymia prowokuje depresję
Aleksytymicy nie dają sobie rady też sami ze sobą. Brak umiejętności radzenia sobie z emocjami powoduje ich wyparcie ze świadomości, a wyparte pobudzenie wcale nie przestaje istnieć. Doprowadza to do braku rozładowania napięć i niepokoju. Odczuwając to pobudzenie, a nie rozumiejąc jego powodu aleksytymik traktuje je jako objaw jakiejś choroby. Bardzo często boryka się zatem z zaburzeniami psychosomatycznymi, a nawet uzależnieniami. Niekiedy szuka ucieczki w alkoholu lub narkotykach. Aby odnaleźć się wśród ludzi często udaje, zakłada maskę, stwarza pozory, bo widzi, że ludzie okazują emocje.
Na pozór są to osoby bardzo opanowane, rzeczowe i logicznie myślące, niczym zaprogramowane cyborgi. Ich świat jest bardzo smutny i szary, bowiem jednym z komponentów syndromu aleksytymii jest ubóstwo życia wyobrażeniowego. Aleksytymicy nie mają snów o pozytywnym zabarwieniu, nie marzą i nie fantazjują. Towarzyszy im zwykle wysokie natężenie emocji negatywnych przy jednoczesnym niedużym natężeniu emocji pozytywnych.

Alexitihimic individuals not only cannot communicate their emotions to others, but also are not capable of letting people around them into their inner life. Since they do not assign words and concepts to emotions, they do not own the means to understand other people’s feelings. Therefore, normal social functioning is not possible for them. They are not capable of empathy and cannot establish interpersonal connections. Alexithimics’ romantic relationships are bound to fail, for they cannot understand their partner’s feelings. Furthermore, being incapable of understanding their negative emotions, they have a tendency to place the blame on the outside, and they pass responsibility on to the surroundings, which is the main cause of destroying relations with others.
Alexithimia causes depression
Alexithimic patients are also not capable of managing themselves. The inability to deal with emotions causes them to push them out of consciousness, but the repressed agitation does not cease to exist whatsoever. This leads to lack of tension diffusion and anxiety. Experiencing this agitation while not understanding its cause, alexithimic individuals treat it as a symptom of a disease. Thus, they very often face psychosomatic disorders and even addictions. At times they resort to alcohol or drugs. In order to find themselves among people they frequently feign, put on a mask, create make believe, because they see that people display emotions.
They are seemingly cool-headed, down to earth and logically thinking, like programmed cyborgs. Their world is very gloomy and grey, for one of the components of alexithimia disorder is the poverty of concept life. Alexithimic individuals do not have dreams of a positive kind, they do not daydream or fantasize. They usually face high intensity of negative emotions with simultaneous low intensity of positive ones.
