English to Romanian: First ProZ.com Translation Contest 2007 - Entry #368
Source text - English When she moved into his tiny house in Stroud, and took charge of his four small children, Mother was thirty and still quite handsome. She had not, I suppose, met anyone like him before. This rather priggish young man, with his devout gentility, his airs and manners, his music and ambitions, his charm, bright talk, and undeniable good looks, overwhelmed her as soon as she saw him. So she fell in love with him immediately, and remained in love for ever. And herself being comely, sensitive, and adoring, she attracted my father also. And so he married her. And so later he left her - with his children and some more of her own.
When he'd gone, she brought us to the village and waited. She waited for thirty years. I don't think she ever knew what had made him desert her, though the reasons seemed clear enough. She was too honest, too natural for this frightened man; too remote from his tidy laws. She was, after all, a country girl; disordered, hysterical, loving. She was muddled and mischievous as a chimney-jackdaw, she made her nest of rags and jewels, was happy in the sunlight, squawked loudly at danger, pried and was insatiably curious, forgot when to eat or ate all day, and sang when sunsets were red. She lived by the easy laws of the hedgerow, loved the world, and made no plans, had a quick holy eye for natural wonders and couldn't have kept a neat house for her life. What my father wished for was something quite different, something she could never give him - the protective order of an unimpeachable suburbia, which was what he got in the end.
The three or four years Mother spent with my father she fed on for the rest of her life. Her happiness at that time was something she guarded as though it must ensure his eventual return. She would talk about it almost in awe, not that it had ceased but that it had happened at all.

Source text - English 1 Combustion
1.1 The energy and heat assessment
The energy assessment is used to determine how the energy from the fuel is used.
The combustion of the mix in fact produces a quantity of energy which is not completely exploited. A large proportion of the energy is thus evacuated into the air, the cooling system and the exhaust gases in the form of heat.
Studying the heat assessment enables the engine output to be determined. In other words, the useful energy in relation to the total energy produced and therefore consumed.
The output of the internal combustion engine is relatively low. On vehicles, it is around 35%. It can exceed 50% on industrial engines whose operation is stable (fixed revolution speed).
This diagram shows the distribution of the energy created by combustion. A large quantity of energy is evacuated by the exhaust gases in the form of heat and mechanical energy. When the exhaust valve is opened, the pressure applied to the piston is freed. The mechanical principle of the engine does not therefore profit entirely from the pressure produced. The heat evacuated by the gases is also considerable.
Part of the energy is absorbed by the friction inside the engine. All of the moving parts contribute to generating friction. The friction is larger or smaller depending on the size and weight of the moving parts, but also depending on the technology used (gasoline/diesel).
A large part of the energy is evacuated into the cooling system in the form of heat. The circuit then transmits the heat to the outside air via the cooling radiator.
Finally, the useful mechanical energy is of around 32 to 35% for a gasoline engine and can go up to 42% on Diesel engines.
1.2 The principle of combustion
Combustion is a chemical reaction. Fuel and combustive molecules react with each other, the atoms separate and then assemble differently to create other molecules.
Fuels are composed of several hydrocarbons. They are mainly composed of 'Carbon (C)' atoms and 'Hydrogen (H)' atoms.
The H/C relationship of gasoline or diesel is close to that of heptane (C7H16) and this is which heptane is chosen to represent fuel in chemical equations.
The chemical equation of the perfect combustion of heptane is as follows:
C7H16 + 11O2 => 7CO2 + 8H2O
The fuel that reacts with oxygen in the air produces carbon dioxide and water vapour.
The result is obtained in perfect combustion conditions. This means that each heptane molecule reacts to combustion and the mixture is perfectly homogenous, so that the carbon dioxide and water molecules can form easily.
The combustion that takes place in the heat engine does not enjoy perfect conditions. Indeed, the mixture is never entirely homogenous, the molecules which compose the hydrocarbons are stable to a greater or lesser degree, elements other than carbon and hydrogen are present in the fuel, 80% of air is composed of nitrogen and, above all, the engine parts absorb the heat which is what carries combustion. The zones on the mechanical part contacts, known as 'cold zones', are not favourable to combustion occurring correctly.
It is these parameters that affect combustion and create pollutants.
The equation can be written thus:
C7H16 + O2 + N2 => CO2 + H2O + NOx + HC + CO
In this equation, the pollutants of the internal combustion engine can be seen.

C7H16 + 11O2 => 7CO2 + 8H2O
C7H16 + O2 + N2 => CO2 + H2O + NOx + HC + CO

Local knowledge is the key to having a successful international campaign.
If you want to succeed in today's world of global commerce and ever-changing technology, you need to communicate effectively across languages and cultures. And that requires a partner that understands both language and the marketplace.
Having work experience in the most diverse environments (language teaching/education, management, technical, sales) – I acquired both a substantial cultural baggage, as well as in-depth knowledge of the local market, customer behavior and preferences, all of which have enabled my work to go beyond simply translating words from one language to another, and to offer, in exchange, meaningful messages to the targeted audience.
My goal is simple: improve the communication process.
To achieve that, I place great importance on every facet of creating a translation that is:
- linguistically correct,
- culturally adapted, and
- technically appropriate.
And after more than 15 successful and rewarding years of work in the field of language and localization services, an experience backed by serious higher education in reputable universities in both languages and technical fields, the quality I guarantee with every project I complete is not only a matter of personal pride – it’s a promise!
