Oczyszczanie biologiczne polega na usunięciu ze ścieków zanieczyszczeń stałych, trudno opadających oraz substancji biogennych (związków azotu i fosforu) poprzez wykorzystanie biologicznych procesów samooczyszczania, które zachodzą w środowisku wodnym. Wstępnie oczyszczone ścieki mieszane są w specjalnych komorach z osadem czynnym, gdzie w kontrolowanych warunkach mikroorganizmy (bakterie, pierwotniaki) zawarte w osadzie czynnym usuwają zanieczyszczenia, wykorzystując je jako pożywienie. Następnie mieszanina ścieków i osadu czynnego kierowana jest do osadników wtórnych, gdzie podobnie jak w osadnikach wstępnych osad czynny opada na dno. Oddzielony osad czynny częściowo zawracany
jest do komory, gdzie ponownie miesza się go ze ściekami po oczyszczaniu wstępnym. Pozostała część osadu czynnego, tzw. osad nadmierny, kierowana jest do dalszej przeróbki. Ścieki oczyszczone z osadników wtórnych odprowadzane są do wód naturalnych.
W procesie oczyszczania ścieków powstają duże ilości osadów ściekowych. Są to zanieczyszczenia usunięte ze ścieków podczas oczyszczania wstępnego (osad z osadników wstępnych) oraz oczyszczania biologicznego (osad nadmierny). Nieustabilizowane (nieprzetworzone)osady ściekowe stanowią zagrożenie sanitarne ze względu na zawartość dużej ilości drobnoustrojów chorobotwórczych oraz skłonności do zagniwania, co prowadzi do emisji nieprzyjemnych zapachów. Dlatego osady ściekowe poddawane są procesowi stabilizacji, który polega na zmniejszeniu ilości zanieczyszczeń organicznych, a więc zlikwidowaniu ich podatności na zagniwanie. Jednym ze sposobów przeprowadzenia stabilizacji osadów ściekowych jest fermentacja, w wyniku której uzyskuje się ustabilizowane komunalne osady ściekowe. Produktem ubocznym fermentacji jest biogaz zawierający od 60% do 0% metanu, który przetwarza się na energię cieplną lub elektryczną. Końcowym etapem przeróbki osadów jest usunięcie z nich nadmiaru wody przez odwadnianie lub odwadnianie i suszenie. Ustabilizowane komunalne osady ściekowe mogą być spalane lub wykorzystywane jako nawóz dla upraw nieprzeznaczonych do spożycia.
Translation - English Biological Treatment
The aim of the biological treatment stage is to remove solids – those that do no sink and pollutants (nitrogen and phosphorus compounds) – by using self-cleaning biological processes which take place in a water environment. The sewage, after preliminary treatment, is mixed in special chambers with activated sludge where in controlled conditions the microorganisms (bacteria, protozoa) present in the activated sludge remove the pollutants by treating them as food. Next, the mixture of sewage and activated sludge is directed to secondary settlement tanks where, similar to the preliminary settlement tanks, the activated sludge sinks to the bottom. The separated activated sludge is partly returned to the chamber where it is once more mixed again with sewage which has gone through he preliminary treatment stage. The remaining part of the activated sludge, the so-called excessive sludge, is directed for further processing. The sewage with secondary settlement removed is then disposed of into the natural water.
The process of sewage treatment generates a massive amount of sludge. These are pollutants removed from sewage during the preliminary treatment (sludge from preliminary settlement tanks) and biological treatment (excessive sludge). The unprocessed sludge is sanitarily hazardous because of the massive amount of pathogens it contains and the tendency to rot which leads to odour emission. For this reason, the sludge undergoes a stabilization process, which consists of reducing the amount of organic pollution which eliminates its susceptibility to rotting. One of the methods to perform the stabilization of sewage sludge is fermentation which helps to obtain stabilized municipal sludge. The by-product of fermentation is biogas which contains from between 60% to 70% of methane which converts to thermal or electrical energy. The final stage of sludge processing is removing the excess water from it by dewatering and drying. The stabilized municipal sludge can be incinerated or used as fertilizer for cultivation not meant for consumption
