ANALYTIC PERSPECTIVES

In this chapter, we examine a number of
related themes under the aegis of analysis.
The analysis of data derived from qualitative
research strategies is a potentially vast field. It is
not our intention to generate a comprehensive
review of the history of analysis (Lincoln & Denzin,
2003) or of all its current manifestations (Hardy
& Bryman, 2004). There are entire books that go
some way in that direction, and virtually no textbook
or handbook achieves complete coverage.
Rather, through a selective review, we highlight
what we think are some key issues confronting the
research community.We do not, therefore, offer a
prescriptive view on how data should be analyzed.
Textbooks on methods themselves are the appropriate
place for such practical guidance (e.g.,
Coffey & Atkinson, 1996; Silverman, 1997, 2004).
Rather,we survey the methodological terrain selectively
as we perceive it.
The extraordinary diffusion of qualitative
research among the social and cultural disciplines
is a welcome development, and it is one to which
we have made modest contributions (Atkinson,
Coffey, & Delamont, 2003; Delamont, 2002;
Hammersley & Atkinson, 1995).We are personally
and professionally committed to disseminating
further qualitative research methods and the published
work that derives from them. On the other
hand, the very proliferation of qualitative research
brings in its train some potential problems. The
conduct of qualitative work has become fragmented.

En este capítulo examinamos un conjunto de temas relacionados dentro del ámbito del análisis. El análisis de datos derivado de estrategias de investigación cualitativa es un campo cuyas posibilidades son vastas. No es nuestra intención generar una revisión integral de la historia del análisis (Lincoln y Denzin, 2003) y de todas sus manifestaciones actuales (Hardy y Bryman, 2004). Existen libros completos que de algún modo van en esa dirección, y casi ningún libro de texto o manual logra realizar una cobertura íntegra. Por el contrario, mediante una revisión selectiva, resaltamos aquellas que creemos son algunas de las cuestiones clave a las que se enfrenta la comunidad científica. No ofrecemos, por tanto, una visión prescriptiva del modo en que deberían analizarse los datos. Los libros de texto sobre los métodos en sí mismos son el lugar apropiado para tal orientación práctica (por ejemplo, Coffey y Atkinson, 1996; Silverman, 1997, 2004). En cambio, nosotros estudiamos el terreno metodológico de forma selectiva de acuerdo a como lo percibimos.
La extraordinaria difusión de la investigación cualitativa entre las disciplinas sociales y culturales es un desarrollo bienvenido y al cual hemos hecho nuestras modestas contribuciones (Atkinson, Coffey y Delamont, 2003; Delamont, 2002; Hammersley y Atkinson, 1995). Estamos comprometidos de forma personal y profesional en la difusión de nuevos métodos de investigación cualitativa y de los trabajos publicados que se derivan de ellos. Por otro lado, la misma proliferación de la investigación cualitativa trae consigo algunos problemas potenciales. La conducción del trabajo cualitativo se ha vuelto fragmentaria. En una era de hiperespecialización en la academia y otros ámbitos, la investigación cualitativa ha sido objeto de las mismas fuerzas.
