Introduction
The lips are graceful structures which symmetrically occupy the lower third of the facial profile we present to others. The lips have been a subject of interest and decoration for societies through the ages. The original tissue expander may well have been a piece of wood inserted into the lower lip, which is still practiced by the Suya Indian tribe in central Brazil. Once a young man is married, a small lightweight wooden disc is inserted in the lip; with time, the disc is exchanged for larger discs up to 3 inches in width and 3A inch thick. The lip disc in this case signifies masculine self-assertion, while in the Fali tribe of northern Nigeria, women wear the lip disc as ornamentation.
The lips are perfectly symmetric structures and many attribute certain personality traits based not only on their shape but also their use! Even the slightest movement may convey a subtle emotion, and exaggerated movements such as the protrusion of the lower lip may accentuate strong feelings. The famed smile of the "Mona Lisa" by Leonardo da Vinci has served to convey/transmitir both simplistic and more complex feelings in the imagination of art lovers since 1503.
