Source text - English I did not become a translator and independent publisher by choice, but because of the situation of the French publishing industry: I had for years experienced endless waits, unpaid and unpublished translations that yet show up as available titles on websites. In the end I had no choice but to set my own structure in order to publish the writers I promote and translate. The first book published by Kontr is the result of a French publisher not fulfilling her promise to publish the author Mehmet Said Aydın. He came to me to ask for help, which I did, thinking this was a one-time operation. Once he was published, I realized I had no choice but to continue. I have never considered myself an activist, yet my publishing house is called Kontr (Against) and is indeed conceived as going “against” certain things. Against the behaviour of certain publishing houses, against the diktats that want to convince us that francophone readers do not like certain genres, such as short stories or poetry. But my take is not fundamentally defined by politics, my goal is to convey the literature that I enjoy, and that matters today in Turkey, in my view. A publishing house is a home where one invites the ones he likes, it is not a factory aimed at producing goods, labels or at making money.

Source text - English Waterproofing and Drainage Systems in Tunnels
All over the world, waterproofing and drainage systems are seen as a whole in tunnel driving
and tunnel designs.
Waterproofing (PVC membrane) is designed and applied with the purpose of transferring the
groundwater, coming from tunnel arch and wall, to drainage system. And the felt used under
PVC membrane is used to absorb and transfer the groundwater from the tunnel arch and
tunnel walls to the drainage channel . By this way groundwater is drained before it reaches
the arch and concrete beams.
As for tunnel’s floor, waterproofing is maintained by transferring the groundwater to the main
drainage pipe which is protected by filter material and through this pipe canalizing it out of
the tunnel by its natural slope. No additional PVC membrane or felt is used in this process.
The reason for not using PVC membrane is that eventually it has the possibility of increasing
groundwater pressure and giving damage to construction of the tunnel. That’s why in highway
and railway tunnels PVC membrane and felting is not used to avoid the damage caused by
increasing groundwater as a result of possible blockage of the flow. This decision is taken in
accordance with the principle of natural (gravity) draining.
In many tunnel projects I personally worked for, as I experienced in countries like the USA,
India, Israel, Australia, Italy and Switzerland, PVC membrane or felt weren’t used as
waterproofing material in tunnels and/or tunnel floors. Moreover for tunnel driving not only it
increases the cost but also brings about the possibility of damage and danger. And also in
Turkey, this technique is not used in any project.
In tunnel designing process the most important point which needs to be taken into
consideration is building a main drainage channel with a safe standard even when there’s no
groundwater observed during construction or boring.
Another important point is that groundwater must be drained by natural gravity and
accumulation of groundwater must be prevented without creating slopes.
Translation - Turkish TÜNELLERDE SU YALITIM VE DRENAJ SİSTEMLERİ
Tüm dünyada tünel projelendirilmesi ve inşasında su yalıtım ve drenaj sistemleri bir bütün
olarak ele alınmaktadır.
Su yalıtım (PVC membran) tünel kemeri ve yan duvarlardan gelen yer altı sularının drenaj
sistemine aktarılması amacıyla projelendirilmekte ve uygulanmaktadır.
PVC membranın altına uygulanan keçe ise tünel kemeri ve yan duvarlardan gelen yeraltı
suyunu içerisine alarak tünel tabanındaki yan drenaj kanallarına iletilmesi amacıyla
projelendirilmekte ve uygulanmaktadır . Bu şekilde yer altı suları tünel kemer ve kiriş betonlarına
ulaşmadan drene edilir.
Tünel tabanında ise su yalıtımı yer altı suyunun filtre malzeme ile korunmuş tünel
ana drenaj borusuna yönlendirilmesi ve bu borudan tünelin eğimi doğrultusunda akarak doğal akış
sistemi ile tünel dışına atılması ile sağlanır. Ayrıca bir PVC membran ve keçe kullanılmaz.
Bunun nedeni ise PVC membran kullanımının zamanla yer altı suyunun sıkışarak basınç artışına neden
olma ve tünel yapısına zarar verme ihtimalidir.
Bu sebeple karayolu ve demiryolu tünellerinde tünel tabanında PVC membran ve
keçe kullanılarak yer altı su akışının muhtemel tıkanmalar neticesinde yükselerek tünel yapısına
zarar verilmesine izin verilmez. Serbest boşaltım ana mantığından hareket edilir.
Kişisel olarak bizzat yapımında bulunduğum ve görüp incelediğim ABD, Hindistan,
İsrail, Avusturya, İtalya, İsviçre’deki birçok tünelde tünel taban yapılarında yalıtım amaçlı
PVC membran ve keçe kullanılmamıştır. Tünel taban yapılarında yalıtım amaçlı olarak PVC membran
kullanılması maliyetlerin önemli oranda artmasına neden olmanın yanı sıra muhtemel tehlikeler de
yaratmaktadır. Türkiye de ise hiçbir projede böyle bir uygulama mevcut değildir.
Tünel projelendirilmesinde drenaj konusunda en dikkat edilmesi gereken husus sondajlarda
ve yapım aşamasında tünel tabanında yeraltı suyuna rastlanılmamasına rağmen emniyetli bir ölçüde
tünel tabanında ana drenaj hattının oluşturulmasıdır.
Bir diğer önemli husus ise tünel tabanında farklı eğimler oluşturulmadan yeraltı suyu
birikmesinin önüne geçilmeli ve sular kendi doğal akışları ile drene edilmelidir.
