Corporations are exposed to fierce market competition on a daily basis. No matter how impressive a company's technical expertise, if it is not able to develop products or services that consumers actually want to use it will have trouble competing and its future business will fall into question. Similarly, even if a company enjoys brief success, if it rests on its laurels for too long it could well be surpassed by the competition and lose the position it has worked so hard to achieve. Expanding into new fields inevitably involves some risk, but without accepting a certain degree of risk it is impossible to maintain a competitive edge. It is the responsibility of management to calculate the various risks and lead the corporation in the right direction.
The competitive environment has changed dramatically since the mid 90’s. Best selling products disappear into obscurity almost as quickly as they emerge and today’s winners are no longer sure to be the winners of tomorrow. It is like trying to navigate the Pacific Ocean without GPS (Global Positioning System) or a map: no ships around you and no sign of land. It is difficult even to decipher one’s own position.
Many managers think they can boost their competitiveness by producing the same quality products at lower prices than the competition and choose to compete on cost. Indeed, cost is an important element of competitiveness. But it is not the whole story. There are many consumers who will say “sure it’s more expensive, but I prefer this design so I’ll buy this company’s product”. Brand name shoes and watches are examples of categories where this attitude is particularly prevalent.
