Best selling products disappear into obscurity almost as quickly as they emerge and today’s winners are no longer sure to be the winners of tomorrow. It is like trying to navigate the Pacific Ocean without GPS (Global Positioning System) or a map: no ships around you and no sign of land. It is difficult even to decipher one’s own position. Many managers think they can boost their competitiveness by producing the same quality products at lower prices than the competition and choose to compete on cost. Indeed, cost is an important element of competitiveness. But it is not the whole story. There are many consumers who will say “sure it’s more expensive, but I prefer this design so I’ll buy this company’s product”. Brand name shoes and watches are examples of categories where this attitude is particularly prevalent.
