Nous réitérons notre opinion accumuler sur le titre, assortie d’un objectif de cours de 21,9 €, pour les raisons suivantes :
1/ ABC témoigne d’une bonne résistance face au déclin du marché des parfums en circuit sélectif depuis septembre dernier. S’il a enregistré au T1 09 un CA (-18,8 % à taux de change constants) en ligne avec le secteur, ce recul est à relativiser en raison d’un effet de base élevé lié au lancement du parfum féminin The Beat au T1 08. Hors impact de The Beat, la baisse de son CA est limitée à 5 %.
2/ A l’instar du secteur, le groupe prévoit la fin prochaine du déstockage qui était la principale cause de la baisse du marché au T1 09. La visibilité sur ce phénomène est encore faible au stade actuel, ce qui conduit le management à différer la réactualisation de sa guidance communiquée en mars pour 2009 (CA de 273 M€ et MOP proche de 13 %).
Néanmoins, la qualité du portefeuille et la situation financière du groupe sont autant d’atouts concurrentiels au regard des conditions de marché en 2009. La crise actuelle devrait favoriser le recentrage du marché sur les « valeurs sûres », après des années de croissance marquées par une offre pléthorique, une contraction structurelle des volumes sur les marchés matures et la montée en puissance des pays émergents. Les sociétés les plus solides en cette période de crise sont celles ayant des marques « classiques » incarnant l’univers du luxe et de notoriété internationale, un bon contrôle des risques pays pour éviter les défauts de paiement et des moyens financiers suffisants pour à la fois mener des promotions et saisir des opportunités de croissance externe sur un terrain devenu plus propice. ABC remplit tous ces critères.
3/ Le modèle économique du groupe devrait lui assurer un niveau de rentabilité élevé car 75 % de ses charges sont variables. Cette flexibilité lui épargne les impératifs de réduction de coûts touchant la plupart des acteurs dans le monde du luxe.
4/ Sur la base d’un CA revu en baisse à 255,5 M€ (-3,5 % vs flat estimé avant), nous prévoyons un ROP de 32,3 M€ (12,6 % du CA) et un RNPG de 20,4 M€ (-3,4 %) pour 2009.
Au-delà, le groupe devrait être en mesure de retrouver une croissance plus soutenue grâce à un plan de lancements plus dynamique et à une optimisation de l’exploitation de son portefeuille de marques. Nous tablons à ce stade sur une croissance annuelle moyenne de 4,3 % du CA et de 8,1 % des RNPG en 2010 et 2011. La croissance devrait être supérieure en cas d’acquisitions de nouvelles licences.
5/ La valorisation du titre repose des critères conservateurs : a/ une comparaison boursière avec Estée Lauder et Elizabeth Arden, sociétés américaines certes plus importantes en taille mais affichant des taux de rentabilité sensiblement inférieurs ; b/ un DCF avec un WACC de 9,9 %, une croissance annuelle du CA de 3,7 % entre 2009 et 2018, une MOP normalisée de 13,2 % à partir de 2013 (ratio moyen dégagé entre 2005 et 2008) et une croissance à l’infini des FCF de 2 %.

We are reiterating our Add recommendation on the stock, along with a price target of € 21.9, for the following reasons:
1/ ABC is witnessing good tenacity in the face of the declining market for perfumes in selective channels since last September. Although its sales recorded in Q1 09 (- 18.8% at constant exchange rates) were in line with the sector, this decline needs to be seen in relation with a raised base effect linked with the launch of the perfume “The Beat” for women in Q1 08. Excluding the impact of The Beat, its sales decline has been limited to 5 %.
2/ In line with the sector, the group forecasts an early end of destocking, which was the main cause for the decline in the market in Q1 09. However, at present, the visibility is still poor, so the management has postponed the update of its annual guidance (sales of € 273m and OM close to 13 %).
Nevertheless, the quality of the portfolio and the group’s financial condition are still competitive advantages with respect to the market conditions in 2009. The current crisis ought to favour refocusing on “defensive stocks” in the market, after years of growth marked by excessive supply, structural decline in volumes in mature markets, and the increase in power of emerging countries. The most robust companies during this period of crisis are those with “classic” brands, which represent the space of luxury products of international repute, which display good country risk control in order to avoid payment defaults and which have adequate financial means at their disposal to conduct promotions and at the same time seize external growth opportunities in more favourable regions. ABC meets all these criteria.
3/ The group’s economic model should ensure an enhanced level of profitability as 75 % of its costs are variable. This flexibility allows it to circumvent the required cost reduction affecting the majority of market players in the world of luxury items.
4/ Based on the downward revision of sales at € 255.5m (-3.5 % vs. flat estimated previously), we forecast an EBIT of € 32.3m (12.6 % of the sales) and an NRGS of € 20.4m (-3.4 %) for 2009.
Beyond this period, the group ought to be able to register more pronounced growth thanks to a more dynamic launch plan and operational optimisation of its brand portfolio. At this stage, we base our estimate on an average annual growth of 4.3 % of sales and 8.1 % of NRGS in 2010 and 2011. The growth should be higher in case new licences are acquired.
5/ The valuation of the stock is based on conservative criteria: a/ a share price comparison with Estée Lauder and Elizabeth Arden, which are much larger American companies, but which have significantly lower rates of profitability; b/ a DCF with a WACC of 9.9 %, an annual sales growth of 3.7 % between 2009 and 2018, a normalised OM of 13.2 % from 2013 onwards (average ratio calculated between 2005 and 2008) and an infinite growth of the FCF stream of 2 %.

Source text - French Certains résultats sont communs aux 3 scénarios : baisse de la production agricole et de la production agroalimentaire, et pas seulement dans le scénario 3 de pleine libéralisation des importations. Il y a une hausse de la production végétale, notamment à cause des agrocarburants (sauf dans le scénario 3 où les importations d'éthanol sont plus compétitives), mais avec baisse de la superficie (rendements en hausse), plus marquée dans le scénario 3, même si la production animale se maintient pour le porc et la volaille, sauf dans le scénario 3. Par contre la viande bovine perd du terrain dans tous les scénarios. La production laitière résiste grâce au maintien d'exportations de fromages, même dans le scénario 3.
Le nombre d'exploitations baisse d'un tiers dans le scénario I (de 11 à 7 millions entre 2002 et 2020), dont de 15% dans l'UE-15 et de 40% dans l'UE-12. Quant au revenu agricole, il baisserait de 7% dans le scénario 1, se stabiliserait dans le scénario 2 et baisserait de 29% dans le scénario 3. L'emploi agricole passerait en moyenne de 5,43% des actifs en 2004 à 3,05% en 2020, les plus forts pourcentages de baisse intervenant dans l'UE-12. On le voit, les perspectives les plus sombres concernent l'agriculture des nouveaux EM de l'UE-12 qui, loin de rattraper ceux de l'UE-15, ne conserveront un minimum de compétitivité qu'en réduisant encore plus vite les emplois agricoles.
